One Day In Luxor

Advantages: overwhelming
Disadvantages: none

...After 28 years my husband and I decided to revisit Egypt, not that we expected the millennia-old monuments to look any different, but the first visit had impressed us so much that we thought we´d enjoy a second visit. On 20th December 2003 Egypt Air took us from Frankfurt/Main directly to Luxor in Upper Egypt where we landed at 1 am the following morning due to a delay at departure, when we finally hit the hay it was 2 am! The view from the balcony of our hotel room some hours later rewarded us for the trouble: after winter-grey Germany eye-hurting, bright sunshine, palm trees on the bank of the Nile, cruisers and feluccas - Egyptian sailing-boats - on the glittering river! Why do tourists go to Luxor? The remains of the biggest temple humankind has ever constructed are there, in Karnak to be precise, now a part of the city, in...

Luxor West Bank by taxi

Advantages: Independent travel
Disadvantages: No tour guide descriptions

...I would like to recommend anyone travelling to Luxor to arrange themselves a trip around the Luxor West Bank using a local Luxor taxi. I have visited Egypt on 3 occasions now as a backpacker and the taxi trip to the west bank has always been one of the highlights for me. You really get to travel around not only at your leisure but in the company of a real local resident making himself a proper living. Your money will not be going to a tour company, it will be going directly to the local with the family to support. It is my opinion that Egyptian taxi drivers have been the friendliest and most helpful of anyone you are likely to meet. The taxis may look to be in a poor state of repair but they are functional and pretty comfortable in all honesty. You can usually hire a cab driver in low season for half a day for around £75 to £100...

LUXOR....BUT ITS NOT PAINFUL

Advantages: Climate, Friendly People
Disadvantages: None

...CURRENCY : Egyptian Pound (£1.00 = approx 10 Egyptian) TIME DIFFERENCE: +2 GMT FLYING TIME : Approx 4 1/2 hours In October this year my partner and I managed to pick up a bargain break to Egypt for 7 night?s bed and breakfast for the princely some of £798 for the two of us, courtesy of Mr Thomas Cook Our trip started two weeks before departure as we had to have the following vaccinations before leaving: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Polio and Typhoid. Please note these vaccinations are not mandatory these days but according to the Foreign Office website they are recommended. Be warned, the Polio vaccination tastes like what I imagine would be sweaty socks that have been worn by cows for 3 months and not washed! We landed at Luxor airport at approx 21.30 local time (+2 GMT) and as it...

Honeymoon in Luxor

Advantages: Good bargains and a lot to do
Disadvantages: The museums are too expensive

...My husband and I spent 2 weeks in Luxor for our honeymoon. It was our first time in Egypt and the first time my husband had visited an Arab country. We stayed in a small, family run hotel called the St Joseph. It was very friendly and all the holidaymakers staying there got to know each other so the atmosphere was really good. The hotel provided entertainment most evenings which was just as well because there wasn't much going on at nights in Luxor. I loved Luxor but I was disappointed that the only places you could safely eat in were hotels which served up international food at more or less the same prices you would expect to pay in the UK. We did the usual tours of the various temples and we did find the entrance fees for most of the museums a bit expensive at around £7 a time. I wondered if any of the locals could ever afford...

Luxor for 2 weeks

Advantages: Good base for the must- see sights
Disadvantages: Constant hassle from the locals

...My husband and I went to Luxor for our honeymoon. We chose it as it was so central to the majority of the must-see sights that Egypt is famous for. Luxor is really a one street town. This street runs the length of the town and most of the major hotels are situated on it. The Sheraton at one end, the Hilton at the other. We stayed in the Hilton. This is at the very end of the road and a 5 minute bus journey from the center of town. First piece of advise: don't attempt to walk it unless its night, the road is a sun-trap and its no fun being stuck out in the Luxor sun, we learned the hard way! We went with Thomas Cook and booked our excursions with them. This was a good move as there aren't really any shops that you can go in and book excursions. If your hotel offers this, best to take them up on it. The essential trips are...

Luxor

Advantages: Awe inspiring place full of culture
Disadvantages: Local water could make you quite ill

...My husband and I went to Luxor a couple of years ago for two weeks. Although we were worried about security we didn't have any problems and a trip we went on to a Red Sea Resort was chaperoned by armed guards incase of trouble. The security of tourists is taken very seriously in Luxor, and we didn't come across any trouble at all. The hotels are excellent and service is second to none, just walking down the street you find yourself offered a taxi or a caleche (the local horse drawn carriages) every few feet and it can be quite hard to refuse. The drivers are always more than happy to take you on a tour of Luxor culminating in a trip to the local papyrus museum, which is very interesting with a demonstration of how it is made and a hefty commission for the driver if you buy a papyrus! In fact, every driver we used had a brother...

Luxor

Advantages: The heat (in winter) Stunning temples
Disadvantages: The heat (in summer) The hassle

...I have now visited Luxor three times and would recommend it as a holiday to anyone. We have visted twice in July and the advantage of this is that it is one of the few travel destinations which is cheaper in the school holidays, howver the heat is incredible and if possible you should avoid this. It is possible to stay in a good quality hotel for around 400 pounds for a week in July which if cost is a consideration is a very reasonable cost. We spent new year in Luxor and this was totally different to summer as it was possible to walk freely without being overcome by heat. It made us wonder why we were vere daft enough to visit in summer. The hassle is the main disadvantage of the place with people rtying to sell you souveniers or to go in their carriage. If you are really not interested a firm no will usually do the trick...

Luxor Hotel

Advantages: Read Opp
Disadvantages: None

...hotel and casino, so enjoy. Hotel Information: Ok so let?s give some background information about the hotel, the Luxor hotel is located in Paradise, Nevada, along the main Las Vegas Strip, which has the famous casinos and hotels. Construction began on the Luxor in 1991, with the idea of creating the first fully themed hotel resort in Las Vegas; the idea was to create an Egyptian theme, which revolved around creating a pyramid design for the main building to incorporate the name. As noted the hotel is named after the famous city of Luxor in Egypt. The Luxor was fully opened in 1993, and at the time the building was the tallest on the strip, with a total estimated cost of $375 million, however in 1998, two extra hotel towers were added along with a theatre, with an additional cost of $675million. What most people may not know is that...

A relaxing place to do some exploring

Advantages: Get to learn alot
Disadvantages: Not much nightlife

...Luxor is a brilliant place to relax and to get the chance to see ancient archieology and also to learn a thing or two! If you have always wanted to go to Egypt, then go to Luxor. There is alot to do and alot to learn. I went in Nov 07 and had a brilliant time. We stayed in a 5 star hotel for 2 weeks, which was situated right on the River Nile! We could dip our feet in the River Nile without leaving our hotel! How amazing. Attractions In Luxor The Valley of the Kings and The Valley of the Queens were definately the highlights of the trip. This is where explorers found all the tombs of the ancient kings and queens of Egypt. Each tomb would tell a story of how the royal had lived as they would be buried with their valuables and stories. Some of the tombs had traps to defer thieves from gettin into them, and in alot of cases these...

The temple at Luxor

Advantages: A very pleasant city with lots of historical background
Disadvantages: Very hot during the summer

...Tyhe temples at Luxor were absolutley amazing. I was so astounded at the site that I still have those memories of that holiday to egypt. The site is bathed in Ancient Eyptian glory and the historical background was very good. When you go I have to say that you definately need to get a very good tour guide that speaks good english and make sure that he actually knows what he is talking about and isn't just reciting something that he has learnt off by heart. When I went we had a very good a very good guide and he knew almost everything about egypt. I would hope he does considering he was studing Ancient Egypt at university. The basic temples are amazing and across the beloved Nile is the tombs of Tutenkarmen. This is the land of the kings and is very good. You can see the tomb of Ramses the III. I really enjoyed this and we went...
