...I like a bit of action in the bedroom, especially if it involves Bruce Willis. So when we changed to Digital television and Telewest said they were going to charge us £15 a month for the extra cable box in the bedroom, I was not amused. So there I was, no cable box, no aerial, just a sad television sitting useless in the corner and no boudoir action at all. It was during a particularly bad bout of insomnia that I decided to take action and get my bedroom entertainment back on track. In the middle of the night I took a trip to my local Big W (they were open 24 hours a day in December), and bought a new VCR. I walked in, found a pallet full of the cheapest video recorders they had, picked one up, paid for it, and was at home setting it up in under half an hour! The model was an LG Electronics LV200, and it cost me just £59...

  VHS on a budget

Advantages: Nice quality at a low price

...the timer. The machine doesn?t have VideoPlus, but it?s easy to set up to 7 timer events over up to a month. LG claim the video picks up the PDC signals sent by some channels to adjust start and end times for recording when schedule change ? but I haven?t tested this! One small annoyance is that the record and tape inserted indicators are both red and next to each other, so you have to look closely to see what exactly?s going on. OTHER NOTES - Long play function lets you fit 6 hours of recording onto a 3 hour tape. - The LV710 is capable of recording programmes in widescreen - The remote can control basic functions of an LG television too, to save you scrabbling for the TV remote to change the volume. Value-for-Money Video That Thinks It's a DVD

Advantages: Compact, good picture/sound quality, inexpensive

...the LG LV720 was being offered at a mere £59.99, so off I trotted to purchase said item. The LV720 is a Nicam stereo machine, with no less than six long-life heads (8,000 hours use is quoted as typical). This may not mean much to the average non-technical person, but head life is an important consideration when purchasing a VCR - to put it simply, you should be able to record 16,000 half-hour episodes of Corrie or 'Stenders before the picture quality starts to look ropey (assuming you clean the heads regularly with a proprietary head cleaning system). It has a particularly rugged look, which reminds me in some ways of Grundig equipment (could LG be a German company?), however the control buttons are unusually small, and do not look as though they could withstand rough treatment (from tiny hands, for example). ...sees to exist soon. I am full of praise for LG as a whole because I have bought 3 great products to a high standard and the video is by no means less specked up then its modern stable mates. So in all I have no problems personally with this video and would urge others if they need one to purchase this LG LV220 video as it is well worth the price....

a really nice film

Advantages: Top performances from big names
Disadvantages:

...Some absolutely top performers in a film which really should have been bigger. Jane Horrocks (she of Ab Fab and Tesco ads fame) stars as LV a girl who's become withdrawn because of her overbearing mother (Brenda Blethyn). Her only outlet is her father's records which she loves so much, so much that she can sing just like most of their stars. Her mother's agent boyfriend discovers her talent and they decide to put her on the stage but LV doesn't want that, she just wants to see pigeon-fancier Billy again. Jane Horrocks displays her wonderful voice and acting talents and Ewan McGregor displays a not-often-shown talent for comedy....
