The Sheffield Lyceum Theatre
Advantages: Beautiful Place
Disadvantages: Shows can sell out quickly
...The Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield is the oldest of the city?s three Theatre?s (the other two being The Crucible and The Studio which both opened in1971).
The Lyceum opened in 1897 and was designed by the famous architect W G R Sprague, it is now his only surviving work outside of London. It is 1,068-seat traditional proscenium arch theatre. It is a large theatre and today it is the main receiving venue for touring productions in the city attracting a diverse programme of talent including Opera, Ballets and West End musicals. In fact recently Tennessee William?s Suddenly Last summer, directed by Michael Grandage toured out of the Lyceum in February 2004, prior to beginning a 10-week run on the West End.
The repetition of the Lyceum has put it firmly on the Theatrical map but its fortunes have not always been so good.
By the early...

The King of theatre! Lion King at the Lyceum 2007
Advantages: An experience you'll never forget (this will be a long review!)
Disadvantages: I wanted to cry half the time the music was so moving.
..."the Lion King" will redefine your expectations of theatre. A specatacular feast, this adaption of disneys much loved film transports audiences to a dazzling world that explodes with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music."
The Lion King originally opened on Broadway and was an instant hit, it came over to the uk in 1997 and has been resident in the Lyceum Theatre ever since. Most performances are sell outs and you have to book well in advance if you want good seats.

THE SHOW
In the following descriptions brackets contain songs accompanying the scene.
THE STORY-
Based on the original disney movie this stage version follows the story 99% with a few tiny added bits, these however do not detract from the storyline rather they...

Lovely Lyceum
Advantages: Beautiful building, easy access, great views.
Disadvantages: Can be cramped in the upper circle.
...The Sheffield Lyceum Theatre was first opened in 1897, but was closed in the late 60s and fell into disrepair. It was completely revamped and refurbished in 1990.
***Access***
The Lyceum and Crucible Theatres are situated side by side in a pleasant square, with a large underground multi-storey car park linked to the complex. Both the car park and the theatre are easily found, and well signed.
***Building***
The facade of the building is beautiful, and very tastefully renovated in the original style. The Box Office is situated within the next-door Crucible Theatre. The foyer is small, but warm and comfortable, and you are almost immediately guided into the relevant area for your seat.
***Auditorium***
The Lyceum has a traditional proscenium arch stage, with luxurious red velvet drapes all around the arch...

The Lion King at the Lyceum a super duper time.
Advantages: An enjoyable evening in London
Disadvantages: None
...I went to see the Lion King at the Lyceum last week 3rd January 2008. It was an amazing experience and I would recommend it as a musical to watch for all people and ages.
The story is the same as the film with couple of extra songs and lines added in. A true fan of the films can still say all the lines along with the musical.
The performance was amazing with the performers using their costumes and props to their advantage. The effect of getting so many animals on stage with few cast members was amazing. The music is live and you can see the percussionsection in the boxes at the side of the stage. The musical made you feel involved as the performers came through the audiance and also stood in the boxes. It is especially noticiable at the start of the second act.
I have to say at the time I went the lady playing Rafiki was very...

King of the Stage
Advantages: Stunning, ingenious costumes and visuals, classic musical numbers well-performed.
Disadvantages: New songs and scenes are noticeably weaker.
...a live audience.
*
The Venue
*
The Lyceum Theatre, home of the show since its opening in 1999, is an impressive, comfortable venue in which to take in the spectacle of the Lion King. The audience is split between the stalls and the grand circle (plus a few boxes), with each having its advantages. Sitting at the lower level, the audience are more involved in the show; on occasions the creatures interact a little with the crowd, or enter from unexpected positions. From the higher viewpoint, however, one gets a fantastic view of the stage, and a better impression of the ingenuity of the set design, able to see each and every part working in unison.
This is an enormously impressive aspect of the show; looking at the bare stage, one would not expect it to be capable of hiding so many platforms, sliding sections and openings. Even...

I'd be lion if I said I liked it
Advantages: Visually Amazing, Cleverly Lit
Disadvantages: Lacks that certain something; too many puppets
...other West End Shows, this was the first one that didn't leave me with a tingling sensation, a feeling of having been involved; there was something emotionally bereft of The Lion King.
The show is currently running at London's Lyceum Theatre, formerly home to the long-running Jesus Christ Superstar hit. Situated on Wellington Street, the theatre is close to noted hotels such as The Savoy, is a stone's throw from landmarks like the London Transport Museum and is just a few minutes walk from Covent Garden, host to a plethora of boutiques and a gastronomic variety of restaurants.
Ticket prices vary depending on where you sit and which supplier you go to, but expect to pay between £25 and £45 for each ticket, and getting there is easy. If you drive (unadvisable in this modern day of Congestion Charges and NCP Car Park Prices) there are...

not LION (get it) it left me FELINE (haha) grrreat
Advantages: Adults & Children will appreciate. Highly theatrical. Catchy songs
Disadvantages: Rather expensive
...animation, except more attention has been paid to Simba's inner struggle and coming to terms of what he has (supposedly) done to his family.
SO, WHERE IS IT? ~
The show is on at the Lyceum, which is a beauitful theatre in itself and fully air-conditioned for added comfort. It has superb transport links as it is in the heart of London and a few minutes walk from Covent Garden tube station, on the Piccadilly line (which is the dark blue one, for all those non-tubey folk). Covent Garden in SURROUNDED by restaurants to make your evening or matinee extra special too.
The show is on 8 times a week, with matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There is also a Sunday performance on at 3pm. Tickets can cost anywhere between £12.50 (standing) to £47.50 (top price). One time with a spare Sunday on my hands in London, we walked pass the theatre...

Update You MUST see this show
Advantages: A fantastic night out for all the family
Disadvantages: Difficulty getting tickets
...If you get the chance to go and see The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre in London, you MUST go.
The Lyceum itself is in the heart of London’s theatre land, best reached from Charing Cross, Leicester Square or Embankment tube stations. It is situated in Wellington Street, which is a couple of minute’s walk from any of the three tube stations mentioned.
It was my partner who wanted to see this musical having seen the film at the cinema. We borrowed the video of the film before we went so that I could see it and get the hang of the story line. I did enjoy the film but I didn't think it would transfer very well to the stage but how wrong I was!
We sat in a box to the left-hand side of the stage. I was surprised to find that the seats in the boxes were actually cheaper than the cost of those in the stalls, but when we...

I'm going again
Advantages: amazing, great costumes, everything about it is great!
Disadvantages: none!
...18 January 2000
The Lion King
Lyceum Theatre, London
£20
I went to see The Lion King last year with my school on one of the school trips to london. We went and saw two musicals; Saturday Night Fever and The Lion King.
The Lion King is being shown at The Lyceum Theatre in the West End of London and has been for the past year.
The actors and Actresses aren't dressed up as animals but they are in a way. They have hats that are like an animal but you still see the actors face. Their make up is brilliant and they look so professional.
The story hasn't been changed like some of the musicals do, so you already know the story if you have seen the Disney film.
The Actors / Actresses all have amazing voices and they are very clear so if you are sitting high up you can still see very well.
I thought this was the best...

King of the Musicals
Advantages: amazing story, the best actors/actresses, costumes amazing. EVERYTHING!
Disadvantages: expensive tickets, but they are worth it.
...I am a keen lover of all things singing and dancing. I have loved the ‘Disney’ story of The Lion King since it came out at the cinema, and was dying to see the show at the Lyceum Theatre. I was lucky enough to see this award winning musical last year.
The story:
Young Simba is son of the King of Pride Rock, Mufasa, so is heir to the throne. Simba (a lion) meets Nala (a lioness) when they are young, and they become best of friends. The beginning of the story tracks their friendship, which turns into love when we see them age. Simba’s father dies, when Scar (the baddie!) kills him in order to be King. Simba is supposed to become king, but Scar ends up taking over the throne through his lying to Simba and banishing him from Pride Rock. Nala finds Simba, who has befriended Timone and Pumbaa, a warthog and his...
