WightLink: Ferry Good Service!

Advantages: Hassle-free travel. Excellent views. Helpful staff
Disadvantages: Expensive. Not many facilities.

...During a recent camping trip in The New Forest my boyfriend and I discovered the WightLink ferry service from nearby Lymington to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. We decided to take advantage of WightLink's 'Early Bird Day Return' special offer that was being advertised while we were in the area. We were camping very near to the ferry terminal at Lymington so we booked our tickets in person rather than over the phone. The terminal is small with only 3 help desks and one member of staff on hand to serve us. This wasn't a problem for us as it was very quiet and we were served straight away, however during the busy summer months I imagine it's a different story so be sure to leave plenty of time for check in if you are travelling this route. WightLink offer many special deals, some of which are valid all year round and can really...

The New Forest is Great

Advantages: Nice Forest. Attractive Heathland. Deer. Ponies
Disadvantages: Gets Busy

...the south is the yachting centre of Lymington facing the rustic Isle of Wight. The Park Headquarters are located at Lyndhurst. It attracts a goodly number of naturalists, campers ,cyclists, and "soft" adventure tourists, day visitors from the nearby towns of Southampton,Christchurch,Poole and Bournemouth, and an increasing number of foreign visitors. There are a number of well regulated camping sites and not surprisingly campers are pretty thick on the ground during the warm summer months. There are some well marked trails for hikers and the New Forest Otter,Owl and Wildlife Conservation Park is well worth a visit. If you are not into camping-and the British weather is notoriously fickle- you should not despair too much for the villages and towns of the New Forest have some very nice country-style hotels and homely bed and breakfast...

Touring the New Forest Dorset/Hampshire

Advantages: Brtish at its best
Disadvantages: Let Me Think!

...the departure port. There is a better hotel, the De Vere Grand Harbour opposite, but this is very expensive. You can also visit the Isle of white from lymington and if you do not wish to stay in Southampton, then lymington, is a perfect base. Travelling from Southampton to lymington, you will pass through some wonderful places, like Eiling tide mill; from here head down the coast through Hythe and then on to Calshot and lepe country park. www3.hants.gov.uk On 6 June 1944, thousands of troops with their vehicles and supplies left lepe, Britain for the beaches of Normandy. This was D-Day. Calshot Activities Centre in Hampshire is one of the largest Outdoor Adventure Centres in Britain, interest include an Indoor Velodrome and a dry ski slope, with a huge abseil practise block for everyone. Situated in a unique position on the shores...

Good base in Hampshire

Advantages: Lots to do at night
Disadvantages: Not much to do during the day

...Southampton, right on the south coast of England and in the lovely county of Hampshire, is a great place to base yourself if you fancy seeing a bit of this part of the world. Within easy reach are some fantastic and historic towns such as Winchester. You can travel down the coast to Lymington or Bournemouth for a seaside feel and it is also close to other big coastal towns such as Portsmouth or Brighton. Southampton itself is limited in what it can offer for a day out. After being flattened during WWII much of the cultural and historic buildings and sites are a mere memory, but it has a lot to offer of an evening. With a wealth of restaurants, pubs and clubs sighted in the town centre, Ocean Village and in other parts of the town it caters for all tastes. Southampton has a large student population during the academic year which...

Review of All About Me

The cosy,compact,Isle of Wight

Advantages: Rustic,tranquil,scenic,and unspoilt.
Disadvantages: Can get crowded in the height of the season

...The rustic, bucolic,Isle of Wight, located just across the Solent from the coast of Southern England,is a compact, rustic, and tranquil island that has long exercised a great appeal for British holidaymakersIt offers a very English type holiday experience. It is surprisingly easy to get to with services from Portsmouth,Southampton and Lymington, and you dont need to take your passport ! Osborne House near Newport was the favourite residence of Queen Victoria and much of the epic film Mr Brown was shot on location there. These days the elegant rooms of the Queen's fave spot are open to the public and you can spend an enjoyable hour or two seeing how royalty lived in the old days. Sailors, yachtsmen, families, and men of letters have been attracted by this diamond-shaped little Island. Among famous literary figures that have connections...

Review of Isle of Wight (England)

Is all that money worth it?

Advantages: Peaceful trip from quiet port (most of the time!)
Disadvantages: The price

...When you compare the prices of Southampton - Cowes and Lymington to practically anywhere it seems a simple decision - Red Funnel is half the price in some cases. But having travelled to the Isle of Wight to see my family many times a year since I was tiny, there is a reason why my parents always took us with Wightlink. If you travelling outside of peak season, the ferries are quiet, sometimes deserted, the port is tiny but with a terminal open 24 hours a day with a lovely cafe with outside seating during the day. While the food aboard is overpriced, it's perfectly acceptable for you to take your own food and have a picnic aboard the ferry - something I highly recommend. Stark contrast to the Southampton option - while it's cheap, the ferries are crammed, the port is nasty and impersonal, the terminal little more than a glorified...

Review of Wightlink Ferries

Reign Forest

Advantages: A compelling and interesting read
Disadvantages: It's 883 pages long

...I have read many of Rutherfurd's books and have rarely been disappointed. "The Forest" is no exception and covers the period from 1099 to 2000. The New Forest wasn't touched by all of the historical events of England but Rutherfurd has managed to use the key events that shaped its progress. If you are familiar with the New Forest you will recognise many of the names of villages such as Boldre, Lymington, Brockenhurst and many more. This familiarity adds to the atmosphere of the story. The skill of Rutherfurd is that he creates fictional families that are then woven into the historical facts and legends of the period. In this way you are both entertained and also learn a little of the history of the area. There is always a link from one period to the next, which makes you care about the fortunes of the various characters. You...

Review of The Forest - Edward Rutherford

WE ARE SAILING.....

Advantages: Clean, on time, value for money
Disadvantages: No proper place for luggage on deck

...I used Wightlink Ferries back in July to travel to the Isle of Wight (Ryde Pierhead) for a week's holiday. We were going to take the car across on the car ferry but decided against it as it went to another port on the island and was a bit out of the way. Wightlink Ferries operate three routes to the Isle of Wight, one is to Ryde Pierhead (passenger catamaran) Seacat from Portsmouth Harbour, one to Fishbourne Harbour (car ferry but can take foot passengers)from Portsmouth and the other Lymington to Yarmouth. The Seacat journey takes around 10 mins. The ferry itself inside is set out like the interior of a plane except for being 3 seats each side its set out with 3 each side and about 6 in the middle with a cafe on the lower deck serving soft drinks, crisps etc. There is also a top deck from which the views are brilliant...
