The Wolf in Sheeps Clothing!
Review of M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496 by
Radical-Machine
Advantages: Rock-Solid Performance - Ridiculously Cheap!
Disadvantages: None!
...This was the first soundcard I purchased, about 4 years ago at £60, it was and still is an absolute bargain!
While this is certainly an entry level professional soundcard, with 2in/2out, it's been designed carefully and with as much detail as higher-spec sound cards which I've purchased from M-Audio.
Installation is extremely simple as with nearly all PCI devices these days: chuck in the driver CD, or download and install the latest versions. Power Off. Slot in the card. Power On. Installed.
What I like, amongst many other things, is the reliability of the drivers. I've never once had a problem caused by the soundcard in any of the various host programs I use and it's a testament to great software engineering. I've used a MOTU 828 mkII for a few months on a recording project and every once in a while, audible clicks and pops occurred...

Professional Results under £60 - WOW!
Review of M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496 by
Radical-Machine
Advantages: Value for Money, Rock-Solid Performance
Disadvantages: Quite simply none :D
...Just so you are aware: I've reviewed this already, but there's two of these on Ciao, exactly the same product - thought I'd cover both with my review so you buyers get to read it :D

Easily portable, playable and great value
Review of CME U-Key Mobiltone 49 by
Macminer
Advantages: Very convenient and well-planned
Disadvantages: Company not well-established (support?)
...Why bother buying a CME keyboard when there are plenty others, with more established names: Edirol, M-Audio, Korg, Novation - to name but a few? Well, there are a couple of reasons:
1) It is very compact and easily portable. Not an inch of space is wasted. It is probably the narrowest 49-key keyboard, as well as one of the slimmest. You can easily carry it with you, put it on your desk and even keep it on your lap!
2) Key action is quite good. Obviously, this is a matter of preference, but for me it is better than the Edirols, Yamahas and quite a few other keyboards and MIDI-controllers I have tried. The action is quite firm, but not hard. I usually do not fancy so called "weighed" keyboards. I don't know why, but they do not have the same action as a real grand piano. Sure, there is some "hammer-like" effect in these expensive keyboards...

Delta 66 Review
Review of M-Audio Delta 66 by
djdavep2007
Advantages: Easy install, Reliable, Sound Quality & Product Support
Disadvantages: none
...This is one hell of a reliable piece of kit. I\'ve owned this for 5 years now and it has never faltered! The sound quality and performance are excellent. providing up to 96khz and 24bit recording rates, for a real professional sound. The driver support M-Audio give is top notch, releasing updates all the time to ever more improve the performance of the product. (not that you every really notice that you need it!). What is also a big bonus is that M-Audio have taken over Digidesign who make Pro Tools. This means the latest versions of Pro Tools are no compatible with M-Audio Hardware! Overall This is a brilliant sound card for the home studio, providing excellent value for money for a high end sound quality!...

Great quality if a little outdated.
Review of M-Audio Delta 44 by
MysterE909
Advantages: 8 mono channels, balanced inputs and outputs.
Disadvantages: Need to install PCI card.
...I bought this soundcard well over 3 years ago, and it has been a good workhorse ever since.
It was around the time that 96khz recording was just making a breakthrough and so was a fairly expensive buy at the time, but just that little bit cheaper than the 66 (with SPDIF) to make it a worthy buy.
M-Audio has a pedigree that any pro-audio manufacturer should be proud of, and the Delta 44 is no exception, it has low operating latency at around 10ms, and 4 ins and outs on large 3.5" jacks (perfect for a recording studio). they are also balanced which means you can use in conjuction with balanced cables in your studio (perfect for keeping the excess noise down).
M-audio's support has always been top-notch too, with them at one point providing me with beta drivers 2 months before they were to be released to public (and they sorted...

A lot of Inputs and Outputs for Little Outlay
Review of M-Audio FireWire 1814 by
mentalweasels
Advantages: 16 channels of good quality IO for not much money
Disadvantages: Unbalanced analogue inputs/Need an ADAT interface to access full 16 channels
...The M-Audio Firewire 1814 manages to pack a lot of inputs and outputs into a relatively inexpensivepiece of gear. If you need lots of inputs and outputs and you're on a budget this could be the audio interface for you.
There are 8 analogue inputs, 2 of which have preamps and joint XLR/TS inputs on the front panel. I found the pre-amps highly usable given the price of the unit. The other analogue inputs are unbalanced TS inputs at line level, which can be a problem with ground loop noise particularly if you are going to use this with a laptop.
The other 8 inputs and outputs are via optical cable and ADAT. I had no problem connecting a Behringer ADA 800 to give me the full 16 inputs and it all synced very well. For the money you'll be hard pressed to find something that gives you as much IO. If you can afford to stretch the budget...

Scoring, Composing, Playing
Review of Noteworthy Composer by
sterghios
Advantages: Simple, straightforward, versatile, and CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP
Disadvantages: If you haven't got a MIDI keyboard, things get too timeconsuming; still better than Cubase though.
...I have being using Noteworthy Composer (NWC as it is known) since... 1997. I tell you, this application is a BEAUTY!
After using it for almost one year as a shareware, I finally decided to give the $39 that it comes for, and get the full thing. No serious difference really, the only hitch in the shareware is that you cannot save more than 10 times the same file (a problem that can be easily overcome by the glorious application of Cut and Paste...). The prog is good for writing printable music scores, MIDI files, MIDI playback, and very good for music education. In this review I will include alot of tekkie details, but if you havent got a clue on sampling and electronic music, head for the BEGGINERS' INFO section. Where shall I start?
NWC is a music score editor (much like a text editor, only here one can write music scores...

Evolution Sound Studio
Review of EJay MP3 STATION 2.0 Complete package by
Trev1000
Advantages: Great for the beginner
Disadvantages: limitation of preset styles
...Sound Studio is a really clever software based midi sequencing program that comes with absolutely loads of cool gadgets that are easy to use, entertaining and great for any budding would be musician.
In the package i purchased i also had a midi keyboard complete with all leads and software including Piano Tutoring Program.
The basics of the Sound Studio package enable people to create chords and sequences immediately with virtually no knowledge at all, it teaches you all about midi as you go along, and even comes with sample tunes and the ability to add lyrics in both wav and text format.
The complete package with keyboard can be purchased for around £100 so it's obviously a steal for those who want to get started with midi, without breaking the bank....
