Advantages: comprehensive, easy to understand, Disadvantages: none - it's a must have
...I was diagnosed with M.E two years ago. It was an illness I'd heard off, but wasn't really sure what it all meant. All I knew was my life had suddenly changed and I'd better get used to it!!
My doctors weren't much help (I've since moved to another health centre), so I turned to the internet. There's so much to find, but often from another sufferer's perspective. What I really wanted was some advice from an expert.
So along came Dr Charles Shepherd's book, now what I call my M.E bible. Dr Shepherd himself was struck down with M.E when he was a medical student, and fluently thereafter. The book contains everything an M.E sufferer needs to know, from newly diagnosed patients to patients who have suffered for years.
My illness is pretty settled now, but I still refer back to the book frequently, it's that helpful...
Advantages: Great show/Great cast Disadvantages: A few bad seasons/episodes
...was expecting brilliance and wasn't disappointed. The first half of the season was brilliant, as Jennifer Garner's pregnancy was written into the show, however it went down hill. The ending was awful, I think J.J Abrams and the writers went through all of the characters, put them into a hat and just said, I'm gonna kill this one and this one, and this one. It should have ended differently.
Fun Stuff
The show has also been great for some brilliant one liners. One of the many being in the first season when Sydney is tortured, she pretends to finally give in and tells the man to write down what she's about to say. "Write this down. E.M.E.T.I.B, got it, now reverse it" I think this became one of my favourite msn names as well that I used.
Some of the best outtakes of any series I've ever watched were on the season 1 & 2 box set...
Advantages: Great buzz when packed out Disadvantages: Situated in the middle of manchester
...ticket from the Manchester evening news arena box office which was easy to find and a very small queue time. Once I had my ticket I headed to the right numbered door which I also found very easily. I had my ticket checked then into the main arena I walked. First thoughts were amazing, the set was massive but I thought it would be big after seeing sets on TV. The ring was a fairly big ring like it is portrayed on TV also.
After finding my seat in Block C, row D seat 3 (in other words four rows behind where the announcers sit) I just sat back and took it all in. I had a great view in an arena which must have easily had 15,000 people in. The Manchester evening news arena (M.E.N) is phenomenal in size. It looks incredibly tiny on TV but when your there it is a whole new experience.
Back to what you see on TV. The wrestlers themselves look...

Advantages: Insight Disadvantages: The pain, suffering it causes
...Coping with M.E. was a review that I wrote under my old username Kel161080, and due to me stupidly cancelling my account without prior saving my work, I find myself sitting here digging up the courage to yet again write about something that caused a great deal of stress, upset, pain and concern within my family throughout the past 15 years.
Why do I need courage to write this?
Well anyone that knows of the condition, suffers with it or simply cares for someone who has the illness will tell you of what a disabilitating illness it can be not just physically but also mentally and not just for the person with the illness but also for their friends and family that have to watch their loved one turn from an independent person to someone that they do not recognise.
Why do I know so much about the condition?
I have not only cared...
...I have been postponing writing about M.E because it has had such a huge impact on my life and I know that once I start writing, I could go on forever about how this illness affects sufferer’s lives.
WHAT IS M.E?
Firstly for those of you who don’t know much about M.E, I will tell you a little about it.
M.E (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) is an illness that not much is known about. It is thought to be caused by a virus, but nothing has been proven. Because it is such a mysterious illness, doctors have been very cautious to diagnose it, preferring instead to label the sufferer as a hypochondriac, depressed, or even just plain lazy.
This can be incredibly hurtful when you consider the devastating symptoms that come with the disease. Migraines, muscle aches, dizziness, nausea, insomnia, acute...
...There has always been a lot of controversy in the UK and many other countries surrounding this particular disease, with many questions being asked as to whether it even exists at all. Many doctors are of the opinion that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (or as it is better known in the UK, M.E., Myalgic Encephomyelitis) is not an illness in its own right, and that sufferers are either hypochondriacs or that their symptoms point to other potential illnesses and conditions. But as a sufferer for the last ten years, I for one can vouch that there is nothing 'imagined' about this disease!
My illness began with a holiday in Malta where I developed what I assumed to be a bad case of traveller's tummy. I was feeling sick with the usual diarrhoea but this continued for some months after I returned home. I had to have a lot of time off work...
...I was diagnosed with M.E (sometimes known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) around two years ago. Being 22 at the time, it was a huge blow to my life full of working as a busy P.A and clothes shopping every lunch break!
Around 75% of M.E patients suffer from some sort of muscle fatigue and muscle pain in various parts of their body. For me, it's my legs, hips and arms, made worse with the small amount of exercise i can manage.
For myself, no amount of painkillers or over the counter of prescription painkiller helped. Some took the edge off the pain but it was still numbing away my limbs, in turn returning to being painful. I've also tried using a TENS machine, which in my opinion helped for a short time then the pain would force its way back.
About 6 months after being diagnosed, my mum decided to purchase me a wheelchair...
Advantages: Can improve some peoples health Disadvantages: Very costly, not widely available on the NHS
...I have had M.E. now for nearly 5 years (brought on by a bad case of gastroenteritis). It leaves me very unwell with too many symptoms too mention and I have to use a wheelchair outdoors.
I have tried various alternative therapies to get rid of this awful illness as conventional medicine has nothing to offer at the moment.
The last alternative therapy I tried was Homeopathy. I visited a Homeopath in November last year and she was very positive about "curing me" She gave me three different bottles of various tablets all to be taken at various times of the day. She also gave me a tincture which was meant to help with my appetite. Unfortunately the tincture had alcohol in it (and the majority of people with M.E. can't tolerate alcohol - I had told her this!) and I took this tincture thinking it was alcohol free. Unfortunately it...
Advantages: Fun music with trumpets and trombones and stuff! Disadvantages: A bit more grumpy on this album!
...'t get laid"
Did I mention the lyrics were not that brilliant...? But this song is still great! It's a bit hypocritical I guess, but none of that matters. This song is again fun, the ska guitar makes you just want to jump about and go crazy, and you can't help but get happy!
Song 4 - A-W-E-S-O-M-E
A bit of a slower verse for this song, but the chorus makes up for a slow verse!
"You're awesome, so awesome, your everything that I want in a girl! You're crazy, amazing, and everything that's wrong with the world. Don't wait, procrastinate, uh-huh, cause it's not too late."
The chorus is where the brass mainly is for this song. It's a fun song, but slightly weaker then the opening 3 songs. I like the middle part of the song though "You're Radical" The song is a little more rocky then ska I'd say!
Song 5 - We Hate It
I...
Advantages: Interesting, challenging and flexible degree Disadvantages: Non-vocational, hard work
...As many of you will know, I?m in the third year of my PPE degree with Finals in the summer, and as it takes up a considerable amount of my time, I thought I?d tell you all all about it ;)
PPE stands for Philosophy, Politics and Economics. It?s one of the most popular degree courses in Oxford, with around 300-400 students a year opting for the course. As the name implies, it?s a ?joint schools? subject, involving three disciplines. None of these are offered individually in Oxford, so if you want to do any of them, PPE many be a good bet. There are numerous other options available though ? such as Economics and Management, Modern History and Politics or PPP (Philosophy, Psychology and Physiology). If you want to do PPE, but can?t get into Oxford, it?s offered by several other universities ? obviously it?s not as widespread as, say...
