Who knew this hotel was in Macclesfield
Advantages: Beautiful surroundings, fabulous room
Disadvantages: Some rooms are a distance to reception
...nestled in the Cheshire countryside near Macclesfield. Now as I was the event's organiser for the above event I was given one of their four poster rooms in the main part of the hotel, which was originally a stately home. From the grand entrance and after booking into reception I was escorted by a porter to my room up a grand staircase and off to the left of the building. My room had a very comfortable four poster bed and all the usual mod cons of internet access, TV, albeit with only terrestrial channels and sky news but the option of pay per view movies were on offer. The tea and coffee facilities were adequate for myself, however if him in doors was with me I would have had to ask for extra coffee. Bottled still and sparkling water was also provided but as there was no fridge in the room it was at room temperature, which unfortunately...

A great wedding venue!
Advantages: beautiful
Disadvantages: none
...Macclesfield, just off the Silk Road. It is set in the middle of fields and you can't hear any traffic noise, all you hear are the sheep in the fields around- lovely! The hotel is reached by a small narrow drive way which we had decorated wth flowers and ribbons which made it even more pretty. The hotel has a large lawn surrounded by trees-ideal for photos! And the hotel itself is a large old building which is again great for photo opportunities!
Inside the hotel there is a lovely old stair case which was great for us at it was a rainy day so a lot of our photos were taken inside and this staircase was a great feature. There are also some lovely old stone walls exposed in the Orangery restaurant (which is where breakfast is served). Again this was just really useful for photo opportunities for us!

The perfect stopover for Manchester Airport
Advantages: Fabulous setting
Disadvantages: I only got to stay one night
...One of the so called perks in my line of work is that the business that employs me occasionally decides that now is a good time to bring staff together in a bonding and self development session away from the workplace.
While the benefits of such breaks for the workforce are usually short lived, it does give me the opportunity every year or two to enjoy the hospitality of hotels and there are some poor ones out there!
One of the better ones I have visited is the excellent Shrigley Hall Hotel, located between Stockport and Macclesfield in a huge country estate on the edge of the Peak District National Park.
So, why do I consider it a better hotel than most others I have experienced?
Well, firstly location. While most hotels can claim to be well located, this is usually because we are a relatively small nation which means...

Common Barn Farm - an ideal family place to stay.
Advantages: Ideal location for visiting the Peak District and Cheshire
Disadvantages: Can get snowed in in the winter

This is a working sheep farm, situated about 1200 feet above sea level, with two self-catering cottages and five bed and breakfast rooms run by Rona and Geoff Cooper.
For Sat Nav uses the postcode is SK10 5XJ.
Rainow is about 3 miles from Macclesfield on the B5470 towards Whaley Bridge.

Premier Inn - clean and comfy at a realistic price
Advantages: Easy to book, manned 24 hours.
Disadvantages: Have to walk next door for breakfast
...Premier Inn - Macclesfield North.
I recently went to a wedding at Adlington Hall and stayed at the Premier Inn at Tytherington. I knew the type of accommodation available, as I have stayed in a number of their establishments over the years.
Firstly, I booked the accommodation required over the internet. This was very easy to do you just put in the name of the place you want to stay and the dates and they will tell you of the availabilty. You then simply follow the instructions on screen. If the hotel you have chosen has not got the accommodation required, it gives you alternatives within the area. Alternatively, you could contact customer services on 0870242 8000. They are open from 8am to 8pm. Mon to Sat and 9 am. - 8 pm. on Sundays.
The cost varies between £55 - £65 per room depending on the requirements. For that amount you...

Premier complaints resolution -*UPDATE*
Advantages: Large comfortable rooms and beds, good customer service
Disadvantages: Can cost more than others, attached restaurants not always good, breakfast expensive
...I had stayed at a Premier Lodge once before with no complaints, so when we were looking for something to do to celebrate my wife's birthday last month, their limited-time offer of two nights for one at the weekend sounded too good to pass up, so we headed for the Peak District, and stayed two nights at the lodge in Macclesfield. The chain is part of Scottish and Newcastle.
Booking is simple, either by phone or online, where there is a good hotel locator system, using an interactive map. You can also see photos of each lodge, and what it offers.
The lodge was easy to find (they are often located near motorway junctions). On arrival, we were checked in efficiently. The rooms are a good size for this class of hotel. The beds are huge, six feet wide, and there is a chair and sofa. They do family rooms for four as well.
Car parking...

A testament to a lost generation
Advantages: Essential reading for anyone interested in 20th century history
Disadvantages: You won't be able to put it down
...After reading Pat Barkers 'Regeneration' Trilogy on the Great War I just had to go and dig out my well thumbed copy of Vera Brittain's excellent 'Testament of Youth'.
I first read this book when I was studying English Literature to A, level MANY years ago. When we were given the reading list I didn't think that I would enjoy this book at all, but how wrong I was, I loved every minute of it and every now and then the book is brought out to have another reading.
For those of you who don't know Vera Brittain was the mother of former MP Shirley Williams. She was the daughter of a stuffy middle-clasaed family that owned paper mills in Hanley and Cheddleton. When she was eighteen months old her family moved to Macclesfield in Cheshire and when she was 11 they moved again, to Buxton in Derbyshire - just across the Peninnes from...

Tangerines
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...One of the favourites for promotion, Steve McMahon?s men will be hoping their experience in the higher leagues stands them in good stead. They could do worse than follow the example of Northampton Town, who went down two years ago and bounced back to Division Two at the first attempt. The Cobblers were the only one of the sides relegated to Division Three in 1998/99 to win promotion and the Tangerines' fans will be dreading the prospect of emulating York, Lincoln and Macclesfield and merely treading water for the next nine months. Having bought in three new players on free transfers should give them added strength particularly the addition of Neil Murphy from McMahon's old club, Liverpool....

Currys and Dixons do it with attitude.
Advantages: PLenty of stock, good display
Disadvantages: Very poor customer service, over priced.
...I have refused to buy a single thing from the Dixon group of stores ever again. Every time I have made a purchase from one of these shops and returned with the product I have been stone walled by unhelpful staff.
The last incident I did not even get as for as making a purchase before having a problem with two members of staff at the Macclesfield branch on Wednesday 13th June. My Fiancé and I are looking to replace our leaking washing machine and were particularly interested in the new Dyson machine. We drove to the Curry’s store at Lyme Green, Macclesfield to take a look. We found a Dyson on a display and wanted some info on this and other large capacity machines, so we looked about for a sales assistant. Why is it if you don’t want any assistance you get hassled but when you do they scarper. I went to the till point...

Miss Marple would live here
Advantages: Friendly people, lots to see and many shops
Disadvantages: None i know of
...from Manchester and Sheffield, it also has several bus services running through on a daily basis...
Getting there by car from either Stockport or Glossop along the A626, from Buxton, through New Mills, via the A6 or Hyde in Tameside via the A627...
Also, as we did, Marple can be accessed via the pleasant experience of Canal travel from either the Peak Forest Canal, (from Whaley Bridge or Ashton under Lyne) or the Macclefield Canal (from.. Yes... Macclesfield)...
** WHAT MARPLE HAS TO OFFER..?
Although it is not the biggest of places it certainly has a lot crammed into it, including several public houses, many take aways, (Chinese, Indian, Pizza... it has the lot all along the main road), restaurants, petrol stations, many shops catering for every ones needs and even a small cinema (although the cinema I didn't frequent)...
