Bolton last drop village

Advantages: Not far from Bolton retail park, infinity pool, facitlies are excellent
Disadvantages: staff weren't as helpful as other hotels

...We received an email from Macdonald to say they had special offers on certain hotels so we looked into them further. We chose this one as it had a wide range of facilities and was only an hour away from where we live so was a nice weekend break. When we arrived, the place was quaint. It is an old fashioned little village, complete with tea rooms, pub, bakery, and various other little shops. We were told we could check in from 1 so we arrived for 1 and were told that the room wasn't ready so we went into the tea rooms for afternoon tea. We went back to reception at 2 and were told that our room still wasn't ready so to wait in the lounge or have a wander round. There was no apology for the delay. Advantages: Great fun, well-researched, solid characterisation

...Part one of my holiday reading this year, Brigadier-General Sir Harry Flashman relates his twilight years in this eleventh and, sadly, penultimate volume of The Flashman Papers (the 'finder' of the papers, George MacDonald Fraser passed away early in 2008). In three separate episodes ranging from his early sixties to his mid-seventies, Flashman proves there's no rogue like an old rogue. In The Road to Charing Cross (by far the longest installment, comprising a good two thirds of the book), Harry foils a plot to assassinate the Emperor of Austria, before dropping an old rival for his wife's affections in hot water in The Subtleties of Baccarat. An off-key swan song

Advantages: MacDonald Fraser could do very little wrong
Disadvantages: But this might be that very little

...Given the circumstances, I would have loved to be able to say I loved The Reavers. But I can't. George MacDonald Fraser is - or perhaps I should say was - one of my favourite authors, his Flashman series being among the literary feats of our time. Sadly, he died just a month ago, so this will be his last book, and it would have been good if he could have gone out on a high note. Sadly again, though, The Reavers is an off-key swan song, only slightly off-key, but to succeed it needed perfect pitch, and it lacks it. Or maybe it fails by attempting to strike simultaneously chords that could never combine harmoniously. Fails? Let's hear what the author has to say. Moooooove over MacDonalds

Advantages: Amazing burgers, interesting cow theme, efficient staff, good central location
Disadvantages: The toilets need to be renovated

...like the rubbish served by MacDonald's then you would enjoy this restaurant. I didn't get the impression that I'd want to go there for a romantic evening meal, but for a fun lunch it almost ticks all the boxes. The moral of the story? ...I recently stayed at this hotel for 3 nights mid week and had been looking forward to the experience for a couple of months (i even searched for a review on ciao and left a comment!) LOCATION This hotel is situated about 10 minutes walk outside the city centre. We were very lucky with the weather so it was a lovely stroll to and from the hotel, although in more severe weather it would probably be a bit unwelcome trek! However, in nice weather the walk is beautiful peppered with beautiful parks and gardens and lovely townhouses. The hotel is also situated on extensive grounds which are well kept, as you would expect, and beautiful to wander around. THE HOTEL This is a Macdonalds hotel, rated 5 stars.
