...No trip to New York would be complete without a visit to the famous Macy's department store. Macy's takes up the whole block between 7th Ave and Broadway. Given it's proximity to hotel I was staying in it was always going to be paid at least one visit during my time in New York. The store on West 34th Street is the companies flag ship store. Macy's has 200 other stores around the USA. Macy's was founded by Rowland Macy in October 1857, from the humble beginnings of a storefront in the lower regions of Manhattan it has now become a worldwide department store, famed for it's" Thanksgiving Parade" which was first started in the 20's by some immigrant staff consisting of a few floats which meandered it's way throw Manhattan watched by 10,000 people. You are never too old for Mircle on 34th Street

Advantages: Great Santa, Grotto and all
Disadvantages: All over too soon

...I felt like a child again. Whlist in New York I went to visit Macy's Santa. You may think that at 34 I was too old but believe me I was not the eldest to visit, on the Staurday that I paid my call. The Grotto is unlike anything we see today in England. Mrs Claus and a giant bear greeted you as you approached the grotto; a steam train and carriages. The elves encourage you in and as you pass through the carriages which appear to be moving, as a film of countryside and the snow scenes are shown, creating the illusion of movement. Eventually, you walk out of the train into a fantasy world of candy canes, sweets and snow. The elves guide you around the grotto and would you belive it, you can take photos and they will even take your photo for you. It brings back many happy childhood memories. Superbooks! Looks at the Thanksgiving Day Parade~

Advantages: Less people in bad weather, GO to the parade, even in rain
Disadvantages: CROWDS, and hardly any view if you arrive after NINE AM

...: Seriously no joke, arrive at three or four am to get the first in line spots at the parade. You'll see people setting up, doing their routines, and you'll love the 'less' crowds . THIRD BEST HINT FOR VIEWING THE PARADE: and this really is the best view that you'll get unless you are actually in the parade. WATCH THIS PARADE ON TELEVISION! lol...seriously, you'll see most of the floats and balloons and get to hear all the singing and the bands also. All kidding aside, yes, it's nice to see the parade live --in person, once or twice in your life but this i s not something that you would want to do every single year. Great Shop

Advantages: Everything Under One Roof
Disadvantages: Can get very hot in store

...First off a trip to NYC is not complete wihout a visit to Macys, Its a shoppers paradise. This store is the biggest department shop in the world so you may need to set a few hours aside to cover everything depending on how you like to shop. The shop is on West 34th street and is a short stroll to the shops of 5th ave and the empire state building, its almost opposite madison square gardens and again about a ten minute walk to Times square and the theatre district. The subway is also across the street so it easy to find and get to. Depending on which entrance you use depends on what department you enter the store. All cosmetics are on ground floor with all the well known names, MAC, BENEFIT, DIOR, etc at a fraction of the UK cost and from my own experience cheaper than the duty free at airorts. Ladies bags are also located here...

...We arrived in a very wet and windy New York, what to do? Our hotel was situated more or less next door to Macy's department store so you got it, we went shopping! The first striking thing about Macy's is the sheer size of the place, a full block in length and upward of 7 floors, it really is a shopaholics dream. First port of call for international visitors should be the Visitors centre, situated on the first floor. Here, on the production of id, you will be given a discount card which entitles you to 11% off the ticketed prices, (but doesn't include franchised counters like most of the perfume dept) this is very useful as 8.25% tax is added to the ticket price when you get to the till, so if like me maths isnt your strong point then it saves a lot of working out. ...I was really looking forward to visiting Macy's as its so hyped up.All amaerican TV shows mention it and no wonder it takes up a whole street!To be honest it was the only let down about NY.I can only describe Macy's as the largest Debenhams in the world.It is nothing special. The only thing that distinguishes it from other department stores is its size.The store does not cater for the disabled a there are only escalators between floors, there are no passenger lifts.There is a lot of hustle & bustle inside the store so its hard to get at anything you may want to buy.But do not be disheartened because the shop next door probably sells it at half the price anyway!!...

...thanksgiving in New York and then hitting the shops for the next couple of the days during the sales. I recoomend this for visitors from Europe especially to give you an idea of how important this holiday is to Americans and how much effort Macy's make to provide a good show....

...Macy's San Francisco had been recommended to me by a friend. On a recent visit to the wonderful place that is San Francisco I decided to visit and see what all the fuss was about. Macy's is situated in The Union Square part of San Francisco. It is easy to find and see. Most of the departments are in the main building -the men's department is across the street in a separate building, still easy to get to. Macy's is full of clothing, cosmetics and pretty much anything you might need to buy. They have designer names, Luis Vuitton just to name one. It's pretty much like any other department store anywhere in the world - nothing too special to report. No Warning Needed

Advantages: some good songs
Disadvantages: but not enough

...which has great lyrics. Billie Joe seems to know what he is writing about, and uses lyrics which actually mean something, unlike some pop artists, which just seem to write about garbage. Then, yes, a hard hitting track. Minority was the first single released from the album, and brings back the memories of other Green Day albums. Its lyrics are again, fantastic, the message of single solidarity is well put across. Macy?s Day Parade is a quiet, slow song to finish off the album, good in content. The bonus track is a bit incomprehensible because it is live, but is a faster song, and you can tell the band is getting into playing the track! Overall, great album, different to previous Green Day albums, good thoughtful, thought-provoking lyrics, and a definate for all Green Day fans. I will let you decide whether the band is getting old, hence...
