Madeira - Paradise
Advantages: Fantastic in every way
Disadvantages: None as far as I'm concerned
...-aged or elderly English or Germans. There are some families of course, but thankfully not too many. This isn't Majorca- thank God.
IN SUMMARY
Although we're exploring other places now, Madeira at the moment remains my favourite holiday destination. It isn't cheap but it is worth every penny. The food is great. The locals are friendly and relaxed. Crime surely exists but appears to be very low. The scenery...

Buzzard_cad visits the garden of Madeira
Advantages: Beautiful picturesque island, not too hot in summer
Disadvantages: Hilly, poor restaurants, no sandy beaches
...and has no sandy beaches.
~Getting there~
By Air- We flew with Air Portugal (TAP) from Gatwick on a scheduled flight, however there are other air carriers that fly charter flights to the airport of Funchal (FNC). For further details of my experience with TAP please read my earlier review here on Ciao, I will only briefly say that they were okay.
By Sea- Another way to get to Madeira is via...

Frankly, Madeira, I Don't Give A Damn
Advantages: amazing scenery, not very family or children oriented
Disadvantages: no beaches, not very family or children oriented!

LANDSCAPE AND CLIMATE
Madeira is volcanic in origin and a range of mountains up to 6,000 feet high run east to west across the island. Virtually the whole island is hilly which makes agriculture difficult and car journeys extremely ear-popping!
