Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Plug In Bellamy

Advantages: Consistency of tracks, nice guitar work, can be heavy
Disadvantages: Overblown? Falsetto overkill?

...Origin of Symmetry opens quietly with the piano arpeggios of single, 'New Born'. Note Matthew Bellamy's noisy breath intake (his style). Thankfully, this is a rock record and soon, with a distorted guitar riff he signals the band to do what they do best (that is rock by the way). As the drop D riff relies on a chord progression to get anywhere, none of the parts of the song stood out to me - thus making for a good but not great start to the album. Of the other singles, 'Bliss', with it's 3 octave synth chord ascend-descends, has nicely bass-driven verses, as does 'Hyper Music', the latter making a double A-sided single with a cover of 'Feeling Good' which, not only rocks but has a section where Matt delivers a verse through megaphone. 'Plug In Baby' sees clever use of an harmonic minor scale for it's guitar leads and the vocal outside...

...Ok, hands up all of you who haven’t just shed a tear at the sad demise of Madge Bishop on Neighbours this afternoon? I bet not many hands are raised, at least not amongst us “girlies” Madge had been suffering from cancer for only a couple of weeks, surprisingly not very long in soap life(they tend to drag these things out longer as a rule?) and she “passed away” a few minutes ago she was surrounded by the 3 men in her life, the ever faithful Harold (who is now questioning his faith, ) and Paul and Tad, their foster sons. ...you wondering: so what? The proposed video for the song also betrays something about Madonna. The initial cut, a political video attacking the war on Iraq, was cut at the last minute and replaced with a mundane one of Madge singing in front of the flags of the world. It seemed like a bit of a damp squib from a lady who had once challenged the establishment with her risqué videos, including dancing with a black Jesus in the 'Like A Prayer' video? has Madonna lost her cutting edge? Elsewhere, things don't get better. 'I'm So Stupid' is inane and has very few redeeming features, while 'Intervention' is desperately dull and can really send you to sleep. 'X-Static Process' is confused both lyrically and musically; unsure of what direction it wants to go in, a messy affair that is really weak. 'Mother & Father' is initially a highlight but...

...ruined a timeless classic. Me? I guess I can?t really sit on the fence so sorry, Madge it?s bloody awful!!!! As with her previous ?Ray Of Light? album, Madonna has again dragged pop music into uncharted territories. It?s really refreshing to see a top artist willing to experiment with their work and actually succeed. I belive this album would have been better if ?American Pie? had been omitted ? ?Gone? serves as a perfect finale to the album. I must admit though I`m not a great fan of artists doing cover versions ? ?money for old rope? comes to mind for me. This aside, ?Music? is a brilliant album and was probably the best release of 2000, and restored Madonna back as the ?Queen Of Pop?. Get yourself a copy now!...

...This, for those of you in the know, and I am sure that must make up a great percentage of you, is Madonna's second greatest hits compilation. The first, the wonderfully titled 'Immaculate Collection', was, in my opinion, quite poor and insubstantial, but that goes against the grain of popular thought which says 'Madonna = cool', so therefore the Immaculate Collection must be good... such is life... and now here we are with her second, the woefully titled GHV2 (Greatest Hits Volume Two) - I apologise for being pedantic but you must question that title. Did she think Greatest Hits Volume Two was too conservative a title? Was it a case of Madge trying to hit us from leftfield 'I know, this'll confuse them'? In any case, a silly title. ...My recent quest for FREE DVD hire I visited and many DVD web sites that offered a free trial. Now call me tight (no that wasn?t an invite), but I like bargains and freebies and am not ashamed to say so. My quest took me to enough sites to hire DVDs for about four months so far (with plenty to come too). My latest free DVD site also happens to be the best I have tried for several reasons (see rest of op); the site in question is Blockbuster.co.uk. Other sites that I have had free rentals from and then cancelled have all been similar, two weeks free trial with two DVD?s per time ? which in effect gives you about four free DVD?s. With Blockbuster?s things are different slightly ? which add a great deal of benefit to us the customer. ...Before I bought this DVD player Id never really owned a DVD player before. I had however had and still do have a ps2 on which I used to play my DVDs. I never really went and still don’t go on this so much so I was going to sell it and buy a DVD player. In the end I decided to just keep the ps2 and to get a cheaper DVD player than I was looking for in the first place. The main reason why I wanted a new DVD instead of the one in the ps2 was so I could play divx format DVDs on it. The DVD player in a ps2 doesn’t recognise this format and scene as I have several divx movies already on disk and on my laptop to put onto disk then I wanted a DVD player that would recognise and play this format.
