Magellan Explorist 500 Europe

Advantages: Size, speed, colours, waterproof, SD slot
Disadvantages: Reliance on poor Magellan Maps, no third party support

...I wanted a small GPS unit principally for my off road mountain biking activities. It's a real hassle stopping the bike unfolding the OS map and working out precisely where you are, on a legitimate bridle path or in a farmers backyard. When I saw the advert for the new eXplorist 500 at £350, featuring Magellan's topographical UK map, I thought this is it, a bit expensive, but just what I've been waiting for. The reality is somewhat different to the expectation, hence my disappointment. Now don't get me wrong, this little GPS unit is easy to use, it's fast and accurate and will display your position on it's simple and crude basemap as good as any other Garmin or Magellan unit. It will also give you an accurate reading of latitude and longitude or OS grid reference. But what's the use of a 16 colour TFT screen if the map on it...

The car was very clean and tidy, but with a few rust spots on the wheel arches. The Interior was very simple and looked surprisingly modern for a car of that age. I was so impressed with it, I took it for a test drive and later bought it. I didn?t realise that this would be the beginning of 5 very happy years of motoring. The 1.3 never let me down, and the only repair work I had done was for the exhaust and the front brakes - even that was usual wear and tear! I kept the 1.3 up until...

Advantages: Attractive, 3 bedrooms plus good sized centre, packs away small, rel. easy to pitch
Disadvantages: Was expensive originally but can be got for good discount now

505 the neighbour of the devil

...the fastest MG ever. Only 505 were built and this has to be the ultimate hot hatch, because it was a normal everyday car a bit bland to some people but the MG marque breathed its fire on to it and it became the daddy. Inside it was pretty much the usual maestro story plasticy dash etc. but added to that gripping and very supportive seats enblazoned with the MG logo, leather stearing wheel, red seat belts. One disadvantage is the brakes deffinatley can't handle the turbo charged engine. body kit by tickford makes it look well mean....

Get lost - but get GPS 2000

Advantages: Very accurate position finder. High functionality.
Disadvantages: Needs batteries. Can operate continuously for only 24 hours

...of guesswork and estimation in this and in poor conditions, updating the chart can be difficult and especially so if the crew is inexperienced at boat handling. Magellan GPS 2000 - a solution? Yes – one of them. Never a substitute for accurate chartwork, DR navigation and log-keeping. There are other ways of finding out position like Decca (Europe) and Loran (in the US), but both these methods, based on radio beacons have built-in errors and still require some adjustment. Satellite navigators like GPS 2000 used to have built-in errors for US defence considerations, but in August 2000 these were removed and the accuracy of readings improved from around 10-100metres down to what is now about 1-3 metres from my observations. I've had it for a few years now and it frequently comes off the shelf to be played as it always makes an inspiring impact on me in one way or other no matter how many time I have watched it. ...Clapped out runabout or economical town car? Both! I am not going to pretend a car of this generation does not have its problems but it also has its good points. THE CAR The maestro was first produced in 1983 and 596,000 cars were made. The model is available in 1.3, 1.6 litre petrol engine or 2.0 litre diesel or diesel turbo. The maestro has a four cylinder engine and reaches a maximum of between 93 and 101 mph depending on the model (but take it from me with a tail wind and a steep slope you can try for more!). The 0-60 statistics don’t quite rank with a Porsche and range from the 1.6 model at 10.5 seconds to the 2.0 litre diesel at a lethargic 16 seconds. Not a car for avid drag racers.
