Magellan Explorist 500 Europe
Advantages: Size, speed, colours, waterproof, SD slot
Disadvantages: Reliance on poor Magellan Maps, no third party support
...doesn't use any of the colours?
Now this is when I bought the additional Magellan Mapsend Topo GB map for an extra £125.
This promised:-
"Map detail at 1:50,000 resolution include elevations, woodlands, parks, nature reserves, lakes, rivers, roads, motorways, landmarks, historic locations and more. Additional map features such as waterways paths and tracks appear at 1:10,000 resolution for fun and easy navigation in the outdoors"
The bad news is the roads and tracks aren't accurate they're not where they say they are and they're shown as a dotted black line regardless of them being a public footpath, a bridle way, a road used a public pathway (RUPP) or even a road!. The woodlands are rectangular blocks of green and in no way representative of their true geographical position. Off road it's as useful as the basemap.

Get lost - but get GPS 2000
Advantages: Very accurate position finder. High functionality.
Disadvantages: Needs batteries. Can operate continuously for only 24 hours
...of guesswork and estimation in this and in poor conditions, updating the chart can be difficult and especially so if the crew is inexperienced at boat handling.
Magellan GPS 2000 - a solution?
Yes – one of them. Never a substitute for accurate chartwork, DR navigation and log-keeping. There are other ways of finding out position like Decca (Europe) and Loran (in the US), but both these methods, based on radio beacons have built-in errors and still require some adjustment. Satellite navigators like GPS 2000 used to have built-in errors for US defence considerations, but in August 2000 these were removed and the accuracy of readings improved from around 10-100metres down to what is now about 1-3 metres from my observations.
Position co-ordinate systems
There are quite a few alternatives provided as standard – Ordnance...

Hotels in Kota Kinabalu
Advantages: Good service
Disadvantages: none
...A first time traveller to Kota Kinabalu need not be afraid of not finding good accomodation. Kota Kinabalu has a very good range of suitable hotels for both the tourist and business traveller.
The Shangri-la Tanjung Aru has long been established as a popular beach front resort hotel which is located approximately 20 minutes from the centre of the city. It has a nice relaxed atmosphere and a very good buffet breakfast spread which even includes japanese noodles and sushi. Prices are relatively high but promotional offers during non peak seasons can be very good.
A newer and undoubtably my favourite hotel is the Sutera Harbour Hotel, located next to Magellan and the Royal Yacht Club. The rooms have very big windows which afford stunning views of the sunset on the clear waters or if you opt for the left wing, then a view of the 18...

Elementary Dear Maddy
Advantages: Intriguing light hearted entertainment
Disadvantages: None
...sidekick Maddy Magellan, played by Caroline Quentin (ex-wife of Have I Got News For You’s Paul Merton) as a rule represents the viewer by asking all the right questions to enable us to solve the mystery before Jonathon.
This is a light hearted programme where you can be led gently by the hand to the solution of the current dilemma or you can try your hand at beating the leading man to the answer....

Review of BBC1 - Jonathon Creek

If you like a good mystery to solve this is for you!
Advantages: Brilliant acting, fascinating storylines
Disadvantages: None for me
...about the main characters to give you a flavour of the programme.
Jonathan Creek is played by the stand up comedian and star of QI Alan Davies. Now I have to admit that I am a great fan of his so I am biased but I think he plays the character of Jonathan superbly. As I said he works for a magician designing his illusions so he has the sort of mind for thinking laterally so he always manages to solve the ?impossible? crime. He is single and lives a beautiful converted windmill.
Maddy Magellan is played by Caroline Quentin and is Jonathan?s sidekick in the first three series and the 1998 Christmas special. She is a freelance investigative journalist and as such gets involved in reporting the crimes which is where she and Jonathan first teamed up. She really fancies Jonathan and gets very jealous if he shows an interest in anyone else...
