Reviews of magna carta
A fun and informative history
Review of 1215: The Year of Magna Carta - Danny Danziger by
frkurt
Advantages: A good popular overview
Disadvantages: -
...Danny Danziger, author of the popular 'In the Year 1000', looks at the way of life of the English during another pivotal year - 1215, the year of the Magna Carta. In many respects, this is a much more important year than 1000 - in the first place, many people didn't realise it was the year 1000 when it was happening. A similar lack of awareness of the importance of the contemporary events takes place in 1215.
As Danziger and co-author John Gillingham note near the end of the text, 'Denounced by the pope, rejected by the king, discarded by the rebels, by the end of 1215 Magna Carta was surely dead.' This was a document that was more important in hindsight and in precedent than in actual effect. The political situation in England was precarious for most participants in 1215, and civil strife close to civil war was not solved...

The Conqueror's Jail
Review of Lincoln Castle by
martin0201
Advantages: Fantastic architecture, massive historical signicance
Disadvantages: none
...of Lincoln Cathedral, the observatory tower on one of the castle walls offers an ideal view of the city.
Events
There are many events on at the castle throughout the year, and also it has a tendency every year to put on a musical performance - Status Quo have performed there regularly over the last few years. The other events, usually running from April to the end of August, can include Medieval Jousting, Historical Re-enactments, children's Fun Days and Open-air Theatre.
The Magna Carta
What is the Magna Carta, I hear you say? It was basically the first written constitution, drawn up between the King, Barons and the Pope because of disagreements between the three about the powers of the King of England. Lincoln Castle is also one of the few places in the world that one of the original Magna Carta documents can be found (there are only...

Review of Does Britain still need a monarchy? by
Coxecal
Advantages: tradition, figurehead
Disadvantages: keeping with the times, useless
...Back when the Magna Carta was signed, the English people realized the uselessness of being ruled by the monarchy and having the king make the decisions of the common people. Since then, the only purpose that the Queen and the royal family serve is tradition and nothing more.
In the interest of the British public, the monarchy should be dissolved because they have no actual reason to be put on the pedestal that they currently are standing on.
Today, the Prime Minister and members of Parliament are the lawmakers and the ones who make decisions (supposedly) on what the people who voted them in want.
The royal family doesn't have the pull it once had. Unless there is a death or a marriage dispute, their lives do not interfere with our daily activities. Queen Elizabeth II, unlike her namesake, does not live in a time where the public wants...

Lincoln's Constitution?
Review of Lincoln Castle by
helencbradshaw
Advantages: Affordable day out, Steeped in History
Disadvantages: None
.... While the walls were probably timber originally, the herringbone Norman stonework can be traced back to 1115AD which is almost as old as the castle itself.
The "Friends of Lincoln Castle" group give regular free tours around the castle itself taking around 1.25 hours and you are invited to join at any point you wish. Unfortunately I did not see a tour taking place on my visit, but this is a great opportunity to get more insight into the castle than a mere pamphlet can provide.
The Magna Carta Exhibition
-----------------------------------
My first stop was to the Exhibition leading to the Lincoln Magna Carta, one of only four original Magna Cartas remaining in England (the other three being at the British Museum and at Salisbury Cathedral). This exhibition was a reasonable size, and it was possible to wander through within about 10...

Windsor. Well Worth Visiting
Review of Windsor in General by
ashford
Advantages: Royal town, Hstory. Culture. Great Tea Rooms,
Disadvantages: Very touristy. Gets Crowded in the Peak Season
...MacMillan. The Duke of Wellington and writers like Shelley, Orwell and Fielding were also pupils there.
Shopping in Windsor is a most pleasant experience since much of the compact town centre is pedestrianised. You will find branches of Marks and Spencers, Laura Ashley, The Gap, Austin Reed, Tower Rcords, Fenwicks, DAKs, Liberty and Crabtree and Evelyn in Windsor. Not surprisingly in view of the fact that it is very much a tourist town there is a plethora of old English tea rooms such as the Magna Carta and the Crooked House tea rooms. Dining out in the Royal Borough is a breeze. A listing of some of the prominent restaurants such as Hong Kong, Jasmine Peking Restaurant, Al Fassia, Latino, Greek, Sharma Indian Restaurant, Yangstze and the Moroccan will give you the flavour of a very cosmopolitan eating out scene.
Other things worth seeing...

Hereford
Review of Hereford in General by
elvina
Advantages: Nice small city. Very low crime rates etc. Good place to raise a family
Disadvantages: No good if you want a busy vibrant city
...We moved to Hereford, about 1 hour South of Birmingham by car, nearly 2 years ago when my husband got a new job. We moved from another city, Manchester, and yet how different the two cities are. Hereford is classed as a city by nature of the fact that it has a Cathedral, which I must say is splendid, if you are visiting Hereford it is well worth a visit, apart from a lovely interior the Cathedral also houses a chained library and the Magna Carta. You have to pay to visit the library and Magna Carta but entry to the Cathedral is free. On fair days you can also go up the tower, I haven’t been because I have a young daughter, however my husband has and he says that the views are amazing however it is not for the faint hearted as there are a lot of steps.
Hereford is a market town and the market site is still in regular use...

Buy an original Magna Carta guv?
Review of Lincoln Castle by
atticusuk
Advantages: Interesting place to visit.
Disadvantages: None
...to the Georgian Prison Building which was built in 1787 for debtors and felons. I found this to be very interesting in particular because it housed the prison chapel. Instead of pews the prisoners stood up in wooden cells which were designed to resemble coffins and gave them only a view of the preacher and nothing else. Not only can you stand in one of the cells but also stand on the pulpit and look out over the congregation that are permanently housed their. Locking your child in is optional but to be expected, mine was not impressed proclaiming that he knew I would do it when he went in.
Also contained in the prison building is an exhibit of the Magna Carta. I was not aware that there are actually four surviving originals of the Magna Carta and one is housed at Lincoln Castle. Certainly the approach for the display was aimed at school children but I...

RPG game with unique battle system
Review of Magna Carta: Tears of Blood (PC2) by
Stenly7981
Advantages: Flashy skills animation, good strategy required
Disadvantages: Too linear and rather monotonous
...into Reith, who had lost her memory.
Exploration in Magna Carta is simple because of the Linearity of this game. When you are in the field there are three modes. Those are Detect Mode, Dash Mode and Rest Mode. While on the battle maps you can switch between Dash and Detect Modes by pressing the R1 button. If you press the square button you will be in rest mode.
Detect Mode
This is the mode that you will want to be in when you are looking for monsters or treasure on the map. The advantage of being in Detect Mode is that you have a wider range of vision. Battles are commenced when the enemy sees you or if you can get behind the enemy and slash them using the X button. You will know that you are in range of an enemy because they will turn red.
Dash Mode
This is a faster way of getting around but it's not recommended for fighting because...

It's all that! and more!
Review of 1066 & All That: A Memorable History of England - W. C. Sellar, R. J. Reatman by
frkurt
Advantages: Humourous, witty, light-hearted spoof
Disadvantages: -
...) and vice versa. It is essential to keep these distinctions clearly in mind (and vice versa).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
We are introduced to the conversion of the Angles (no, not Angels, but Angles, hence, Anglicans), helped of course by the Venomous Bead. Shortly thereafter, we had the Egg-Kings (Eggberd, Eggbreth, Eggfroth, etc.), none of them, however, succeeded in becoming memorable, except in so far as it is difficult to forget such names as Eggbirth, Eggbred, Eggbeard, Eggfilth, etc. Nor is it even remembered by what kind of Eggdeath they perished.
Of course, most in Britain and America probably never have read the Magna Carta, being as it is in a foreign tongue (funny how English tends to do that). So, this book provides a useful summary:
1. That no one was to be put to death, save for some reason...

Lincoln Castle
Review of Lincoln Castle by
jedimasterlincoln
Advantages: A lot of history, very informative tour, Value for money.
Disadvantages: A touch Inaccessible. Outdoors.
..., and proceeds around the watch tower to the bailey atop a steep stone stairwell (which used to be wooden when the castle was "in use).
The tour also points out many notable features along the way, both from Roman times and the days of the Victorian Prison. It lasts roughly 2 hours after which you are free to go off on your own.
Other points of interest include the interior of the prison, (Chapel, cells, excersize area) as well as one of only 4 copies of the Magna Carta (The English version of the US Constituion) which contains the basis of many of the English laws we abide by today as well as it's history in the exhibition hall.
Facilities, as well as the tour, include gift shop, toilets and cafe for drinks and snacks, with outdoor eating facilities.
Disabled or those with limited mobility might struggle, given the nature of the attraction...
