Nice city in the heart of Germany

Advantages: beautiful historic area,in the heart of Germany
Disadvantages: at times a little expensive

...Well I am living in Germany and in the Frankfurt area. Therefore I know the Frankfurt area quite well. When you see the ever growing Frankfurt airport you realized that Frankfurt is a city always on the move. Frankfurt is located in a region called the Rhein-Main Area. Surrounded by citys nearby (within 45 Minutes) called Mainz, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt and Giessen, Frankfurt is really the heart of this region. Also a one hour drive away is the beautiful and historic city of Heidelburg.Quite near is also the Taunus and the Odenwald(`mountain`areas),that are really nice to see and of course the city of Rüdesheim, famous for its Drosselgasse. Frankfurt has a few things you have to see, when you are there. At first you go to the inner city and walk over the so called Zeil, which is the main street for shopping in Frankfurt. If you decide to see...

An Absolute Disgrace

Advantages: Flew to Frankfurt
Disadvantages: If there is a pilots strike they will abandon you

...I have recently been away on business for a meeting at one of our German offices. This meant flying into Frankfurt Airport, in order to get the best of my time and fit in with other meetings and business I flew from Manchester by BA and intended to fly back by Lufthansa. I have done the journey before and generally I had an ambivalent attitude towards Lufthansa. They were neither particularly good and yet there was nothing specifically bad or annoying about them. That is, until my flights last week. Now many people may not be aware that Lufthansa are presently going through a number of pilots strikes. I certainly was not aware until I got to our offices in Mainz and they said that these strikes were happening every Thursday. I was due to fly back 22:20 by Lufthansa. There was then a huge amount of confusion as to whether the flight...

Does (almost) exactly what it says on the tin

Advantages: It's compact, and facilities and access have improved greatly over the last year
Disadvantages: It's nowhere near Frankfurt!

...I suppose the best way to start this review is to deal with the bad points of Frankfurt (Hahn) airport. For one thing, it is actually nowhere near Frankfurt ? this is clear if you read the small print about the airport on the Ryanair website or elsewhere, but many passengers have bought their cheap flights and touched down in Hahn, only to find that they are still well over 100km from the city it purports to serve! Now, of course I can see why that the airport carries Frankfurt in its name, but it?s just not true ? this former US airbase is actually situated in the Hunsrück, a range of rolling hills to the northwest of Frankfurt, and the nearest large population centres are Trier and Mainz (oh, and Luxembourg!). But then, a far greater number of people worldwide have heard of Frankfurt than those other places, so the airlines...

Alexander model 103 and related instruments

Advantages: Beautiful sound, hand made
Disadvantages: Not ideal for beginners

...I currently play on an Alexander 103, which I have owned now for many years. However, perhaps a little background first... I started off as a tenor horn player when I was about 11-12. I played that for a couple of years and then moved on to the french horn, playing on a Holton 177. This was a good horn to start on, but after playing for a few years I wanted more. I spent hours (and I mean hours) in Paxman's in London, trying each and every instrument they had. In the end I decided on a screw-bell Alex model 103. I received it on trial the day before I was due to go off on a course to record a CD. I loved it the moment I played it, and have loved it ever since. -- All Alexander horns are hand-made in Mainz, Germany. They have several different models of single, double, triple and descant horns available. However, the two which...

Aachen Weihnachtsmarkt

Advantages: It's Christmas!
Disadvantages: As above

...I don't subscribe to the stereotypical image of the 'canny Scot', it's a fallacy. By the same token, we could say that the Irish like a fight, the Welsh like to sing, England can't play cricket, the French are rude, Germans are bureaucratic, Belgium's boring, Americans are loud, the Japanese are photoholic, yadda, yadda, yadda....... This is all blatant nonsense. But, when Ryanair were offering flights for 1 penny plus tax, I logged on to their website double quick pronto to snap me up some of that. ONE PENNY each way? I think my finances can stretch to that! A quick tippety-tap on the keyboard, a few debit card details, and POOF! We were on our way. Scotland were playing a 'B' international football match against Germany at Mainz while we were there so the plane was packed with members of the Tartan Army. After recent events...

Crazy Carnival

Advantages: some people love it
Disadvantages: some don't

...Ask Germans what they associate with the city of Cologne, Köln in German (the ´ö´is pronounced like the ´u ´ in burn), and I bet you´ll hear, ´Dom und Karneval (cathedral and carnival)´ or the other way round. (There´s fierce competition between the cities Aachen, Düsseldorf, Mainz and Köln (all in the west of Germany, the so-called Rhineland) each proclaiming itself the keeper of the one and only original carnival, from the outside, however, Köln appears to be the epicentre (don´t tell the inhabitants of the other cities that I said that!) As the cathedral is always there and right in the centre, it´s impossible for tourists not to notice it, Karneval on the other hand (I´m using the German terms from now on because there are different terms in the different parts of Germany) is not noticeable all the year round, although it starts...

Johann Gutenberg borrowed(took) substantial sums of money(silver) from Fust, from a silversmith, from a lawyer, and from a financier. When Gutenberg could not pay off these sums, his(her) pressure and types became Fust's property. In the association with his(her) brother-in-law, Peter Schöffer, Fust continued the work begun with Gutenberg. Jimminy And The Jimmins

Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: Nothing

...hours of my home (though some, it must be said, are in neighbouring countries). Getting around Germany is easy too, as there?s a fairly complex public transport system, with buses and trains operating 24/7 locally and nationally. WHAT TO DO IN GERMANY I?ve spent coming up to 2 years of my life in the country, but there?s still lots of places I?ve not been. Some suggestions though: ? The Heidelbeger Schloß ? a castle reached by one of the world?s oldest funicular railways. While you?re in the area, check out the old town, the university (one of the oldest) and the funky student prison. ? Do a cathedral tour ? the ones to be found in Berlin are ok, but for outstanding architecture you need to head south, to Worms, Mainz and Speyer among other places. All 3 towns also have an array of other sites on offer, so you can easily spend...

Budapest - I'll Be Back

Advantages: Easy to get around. Plenty to see. Luckily, most people in tourism speak English
Disadvantages: Unfathomable language

...! I'd also like to do a proper cruise up or down the Danube. It's even possible to start in Rotterdam on the Rhine, and then veering into the Main at Mainz, and thence by canal to the Danube, ending up at the Danube's mouth; North Sea to Black Sea without going near salt water! The cost would be astronomical, but it's 'proper travel' in my book, on a par with Moscow to Vladivostok by train. It'll certainly have to be put on the back burner till my wife retires from teaching, since the availability of cabins is limited, and even more so during school holiday periods. Budapest is also famous as a spa city, and the beautiful baths in the Gellert Hotel are world famous, as are various other Turkish Baths. The square or basilica to the Cathedral of St Stephen gives an inspiring view to the frontage of this magnificent church. I didn...
