...During our recent trip to Jersey we stayed at a lovely little guest house. A friend booked it for a group of three couples for a week and another couple booked separately to join us for the weekend. As we had a really nice stay I thought I would tell you about the place in case you were planning a holiday to Jersey and needed a room. ~~~WHERE IS THE MAISON CHAUSSEY? The Maison Chaussey guest house can be found on Havre Des Pas in St. Helier, Jersey. It is in a really good location because it looks right onto the seafront and is a great base because it is next to the beach and within walkig distance of the town centre. We went from Jersey Airport to the hotel in a taxi (a very swish stretch mercades!). Good value city centre hotel in Tunis

Advantages: City Centre hotel with bar selling alcohol
Disadvantages: None

...The Hotel Maison Doree (2*) in central Tunis is one of many hotels at the lower end of the price scale. We stayed for 3 nights in Feb 2007 & the price for a double room, bed & breakfast, with ensuite bath/shower/loo worked out at around £19 per night. It's traditional French colonial style, the rooms are a decent size with high ceilings, old-fashioned dark wood furniture, and nicely shuttered windows. Lovely Tunisian-style tiled walls in corridors & staircases. They also offer rooms with ensuite shower but no loo even cheaper. Staff speak good English (although a smattering of French will get you a long way in Tunisia), and are very helpful. Drinking alcohol in Tunis isn't easy - many of the cheaper hotels don't serve alcohol, but the Maison Doree has a small TV lounge and attached bar. It's ideally placed just off the Place...

The builder's Paul-emblazoned hoardings were finally removed, revealing an enticing shop-front beyond. 'Maison de Qualité' proclaimed the sign above the windows, and the display behind the glass seemed a testament to its veracity. Glazed scarlet tarts, smothered in raspberries, decadent chocolate cakes, plump Millefeuilles and dainty petit fours were all assembled in tidy, regimental little rows. Tall baguettes were arranged in baskets to the side, like so many umbrellas in a stand. ...I guess it is something of a surprise to find a wonderful restaurant serving superb food in Harwich but it shouldn't be if you know the area. The people who own and manage The Pier Hotel are the same people who own the Talbooth, Maison Talbooth and Milsoms not far from Colchester. You get the same excellent service and great food but you also get a wonderful view of the harbour where you can watch anything from fishing boats to massive cruise liners and across the water you can see the pretty Shotley peninsular. There are two restaurants at the Pier, The Halfpenny pier where food is served Bistro style and the Harbourside restaurant for fine dining. Our meal came to 1450DH or about £110 for soup followed by lamb tagine and crème brule, but we later discovered the European menu and returned for an inexpensive meal the following day, after being unable to find anywhere good nearby (that also sold booze) This was just 900DM or £65 for spring rolls, steak and chips with a bottle of wine. Maison Arabe is also a great place to stop for a drink in the bar and to escape the traumas of Moroccan life. Restaurant Pavilion near Riad Altaire is another excellent place for dinner.
