Cruising round the Maldives

...the row were a youngish girl and her boyfriend, a largish chap, who fell asleep within minutes and spent the eleven hours snoring very loudly - not a great start to a 'relaxing holiday'. We were met at Male airport by the Travel Collection rep and she explained that we would all need to surrender any alcohol we had to the Maldivian customs people. The Maldives do not allow the import of alcohol but for those who do take it in, it is returned on departure. As we walked out of the airport you could see the shore and across the harbour we could see our boat and one of the islands. ...'cardy' with you ladies its far too warm, each time we visit we take less and less. Some resorts supply beach towels so email the resort direct if you can and ask any questions before you leave home then you have more room in your case. Don't buy alcohol when leaving the UK its not allowed in the Maldives, however you can buy alcohol at the airport for your return home. Tips for any divers, regulators and dive computers in duty free are half the price then what we pay in the UK they all carry an international warranty. Please note that all divers MUST wear a dive computer when diving in the Maldives. On the subject of diving.. Any one thinking of learning to dive should complete there Open water course at home first, then spend the time diving rather then some who do the open water course when they get there, their time is spent...

...We booked this year's visit to the Maldives with Kuoni and chose to stay at Biyadhoo Island which is in the South Male Atoll. If you are not familiar with the Maldives I will give you a brief introduction. The Maldives are a group of islands which are close to The Equator and are south west of Sri Lanka. The chain is made up of over 1190 islands which are coral, and which form an archipelago of over 26 major atolls. Those close to Male, the capital, are mainly reached by speed boat, whereas those further out are sea plane transfers, and intermediate ones offer a choice of onward transport. The flight time varies but non stop you are looking at 11 hours or so. A Bird's Eye View Of The Maldives By Sea Plane!

...When you land at Male International Airport in the Maldives on a passenger jet your journey is only just beginning, as access to the islands is then onwards by boat, or by sea plane. In general The Maldivian Air Taxi Company will be your most likely provider if you are travelling onwards to one of more than 30 resorts. These sea planes take off and land just a few minutes away from the main airport, and the journey is by minibus to where the air terminal awaits you and is quite an experience in itself. There are also blue and white sea planes called The Trans Maldivian Airways who fly to some other islands. ...I recently did a dive trip to the Maldives, not a destination I would have planned on as I've always thought of it as a honeymoon destination. I travelled on a liveaboard boat, doing a circuit of dive sites around North and South Male atolls and Ari Atoll. Water temperature was mostly 28-30C, with mostly visibility of 15-25m. The weather was generally very warm, and fairly humid. Some of the dives were phenomenal. The highlight was the dive at Manta Point (though it's best to point out that there isn't just one but several manta points around the Maldives, partly according to season). We had 20+ mantas swooping in just over our heads, hovering and observing us as we observed them! Baros Island - Maldives

Advantages: This is my favourite Island so Far

...Baros is a small island in the North Male atoll. about 40 mins boat transfer from the Airport. Well this was the very first Island we stayed on back in 1993, we revisited again in Dec '02,. Since then it has been completely refurbished, all new bungalows each with steps up to a terrace outside each room, all rooms only a few steps from the waters edge. Beautiful gardens with scented flowers all round the island. New bars and restaurants that are excellent, the coffee shop extends onto the terrace over the beach, where you watch the sun go down. The service was very good as was the food. The island has a sea wall that shelters one side of the island from the sea, this is great for snorkelling if you are not too confident in the water, but just outside the sea wall is the house reef for the more experienced.
