...This is a review for the 'AA Road Atlas 2009' INTRO Well it's that time of year for me where I think of going on my summer holiday This year I'm planning to take my car to France and go camping with friends, so a good map of France is a must. I looked on Ebay for maps on France and came across 1500 results for French maps, after searching page after page I came across two different maps that I've used before one was the Michelin foldout map (very good) and the other was the 'AA Road Atlas France'. As I wanted as much detail as I could get the 108 page 'AA Big Road Atlas France 2009' was at the top of my list. Review of 2007 AA Road Atlas France (AA Atlases) - AA Publishing

Cloudy Atlas

Advantages: Its very clever and its nat half bad!
Disadvantages: Its not half good and you wonder whether you love or loathe it!

...Well this book is finally finished... yes FINALLY! It took me 8 weeks and its only 536 (well close to that - lol) pages. But it just took me forever to read. Sometimes I would sit and whizz through and other times I'd look at it and think "I'd rather watch crap on the telly!" Cloud Atlas is the tale of six different characters whose lives intertwine without knowing. Set over six different time periods from way back to a post apocolyptic future. That in itself is no small feat, but also makes it no small read. The book is also bizarrley set out like a pyramid of storys where you climb up the first half of everyones tale then climb back down. A package of maps worth having

Advantages: Ease of use and price
Disadvantages: None

...Having used a Tom Tom Go 700 for a number of years, I decided to update the maps of Western Europe. Tom Tom uses software called Tom Tom Home which is used to download the updated maps. Having connected Tom Tom Go 700 to my PC, via a USB cable, it was a simple matter of clicling on the relevant icon on the Home Software, paying for the maps, and downloading them over the internet. Payment was straight forward. It is undertaken electronically either by credit or debit card, and the down load commenced. Because of the size of the map file, it took a little time to download (I do have broadband running at 8mb band width, so I suppose a lesser bandwith will take longer. Use of the system is simplicity itself. You are given a choice of country, and then you select address, or point of interest....

Cloud Atlas

Advantages: a beautiful, amazing and subtle book.
Disadvantages: david mitchell's style can be an aquired taste.

...Having read David Mitchell's previous books Ghostwritten and Number9Dream, I was very excited when Cloud Atlas arrived, and I was not disapointed. Some people say that it is disjointed but I actually think that is it the very opposite. It is, in effect, a collection of short stories, all interlinked, that give an incredibly rich novel by the end, and I believe that these stories flow quite seemlessly into one another. There are definately stories within the book that I prefer, but when you re-read the book you notice things that you didn't the first time round - links that you missed for example, and my favourite stories tend to change with each reading. If you are looking for a book that is a little out of the ordinary then I would definately recommend this. It is great to read on the train, or on holiday. I have recommended it to...

Its hard to map out!

Advantages: Epic in scope, a section for everyone, brilliantly written.
Disadvantages: Segmented, fractured style. Not all sections will appeal. Heavy read.

All Maps Welcome

Advantages: McRaes usual thought-provoking lyrics
Disadvantages: Not as easy to get absrobed into as previous albums

...All Maps Welcome is the third album from Tom McRae, after his self-titled album, Tom McRe, and then Just Like Blood. I first heard this album when I was given a free taster to it, which played about 30 seconds of each song; this then led me to buy the full album. I was already a fan, and was looking forward to seeing him when he toured last year. His dark lyrics and melancholy melodies really blew me away, and I wanted to hear more. In this album, he uses assistance from members of Beck?s backing band. It took only three weeks to record, and the album itself deals with the break up of a long term relationship. His lyrics are just as deep as in other albums, but with hints of self-pity never seen before. A MAP of 3 SISTERS

Advantages: Tasty, easy drinking
Disadvantages: A liitle on the bitter side

...Here's a beer I had never tried before. In fact I'd never even heard of it until recently when it made an appearance in the local Asda at the predictable price of £1.59 for a 500ml bottle. The beer? Three Sisters Scottish Ale from the Atlas Brewery. So did I buy some and try it? No THE END Just kidding. Of course I bought some. Since it was formed in 2001, the Atlas brewery has occupied a very small part of the former aluminium smelter at Kinlochleven (the 'Lochaber no more' in the Proclaimers song). Don't know where that is? Buy one of those map thingies...a whaddyamacallit...nope, the word escapes me. Atlas claim to make their beers in the 'old-fashioned' way...good for them. But if you want to know more about the brewery and their range of beers then you're looking in the wrong place...check their website. Meanwhile...

Advantages: Helps guide you around other countries. Easy to install

...TomTom Map of the USA and Canada Maps TomTom Maps are a 2gb SD card with route maps stored on them that are made to work with the TomTom satellite navigation system. They originally come with UK/Europe maps so these are a brilliant upgrade if you are considering taking your car abroad or hiring a car and driving over there. These are a lot easier than using a standard map when you are visiting another country and make getting around easy. We have just bought one of these as we are planning a trip to the USA and decided one of these would be useful. I have never been abroad so certainly wont know my way around. It was very easy to install onto the TomTom. We also decided the points of interest feature would be really useful as we use the UK based one on our current maps a lot. Cloud Atlas reaches for the sky

Advantages: Witty, well written, thought-provoking
Disadvantages: Unfocussed, some stories miss the mark

...'Cloud Atlas' is very similar to Mitchell's first title 'Ghostwritten' though more ambitious in scope. While Ghostwritten showed how many lives could affect one another through chance meetings and phone calls, 'Cloud Atlas' tries something similar through reincarnation and relation, spanning centuries and eventually finding itself in a post appolocalyptic future. All the stories surrounding these events are told in two parts with a kind of 'pyramid' structure so that the tale that started the book also ends it. This helps to keep a continuity and offers more satisfactory conclusions than the format of 'Ghostwritten' and gives more time to each character. Though in theory this sounds rather hard to get into, many of Cloud Atlas' individual stories are well grounded and humorous featuring a journalist, a musician and an old publisher...
