Review of MapSource TOPO Great Britain Maps

My Acer 2920, super satisfied

Advantages: Light, Powerful, very good screen for the size, Stylish look, keys feel good
Disadvantages: No built in Bluetooth, Cant find a case to fit it properly, Needs a cigarette lighter charger

..., an absolute bargain, with power to spare, a 250 GB hard drive, and ample graphics power, hooked up to a good intel core 2 T5450 processor... I use the followng programs with ease: Office 2007 suite with Outlook & business contact manager, Corel draw 8 including Photo Paint, Publisher, Excel, Powerpoint, One note, Garmin Mapsource, Sage programs including ACT database and more... + plus games. The internet is fast, and i use Google earth and gaming programs with ease, even when you end up with a screen full of open windows...it is still quite quick...lol I am very satisfied, even one year on..... I would heartily reccomend the Acer 2920.... (writing this review on it)...

Garmin eTrex Legend HCx

Advantages: Tough, compact, waterproof, accurate, cheaper than bike specific gps
Disadvantages: Expensive maps, Poor bike handlebar mount, slow data transfer

.... The games are fun the first time but you soon get bored and you do look a bit weird running round a field chasing imaginary geckos! The included mapsource software is nothing special but it does the job and include a few nifty features. Such as being able to set you PC clock from the gps sattelites. Now for the not so good. The handlebar mount for the bike is not really up to standard and does not hold the unit very securely, which is something you want if you've just spent £140 on a gps. The worst thing is this chunk of plastic costs £15! It does the job but I'd prefer something more secure. Another downside is the horrendously expensive maps the GB topo cost me about £100 (RRP £149!!!) and the bluechart was £120 which in my opinion is just too much. Unfortunately it takes forever to compy maps from the PC to the unit, it took me around 6...

Garmin Nuvi 250 Satnav (/GPS)

Advantages: Touch-screen, USB, Card-slot, Mapsource compatability
Disadvantages: Bad maps, immediate next turn direction, no variable POI proximity,

...(if you register your serial number you get 30 days to order a free map update - mine is on order so will redo this review if it fixes the problems). You can also download a Points-Of-Interest (POI) uploader so you can take advantage of all the POI databases out there for TomTom (although they have to be converted to CSV but this was a painless process using free online services). You can also link the device to Garmins mapsource software and this is where it gets interesting. The device can be set to car/bike or pedestrian mode and since Mapsource can upload waypoints you have a satnav which can also double as a GPS which makes it sort of usable for Geocaching etc. The only problem with this is when you use the zoom functions, it sometimes redraws the map without the POI's. It also has some other tools such as a currency convertor...

Cheap (or not), simple, maps out of date

Advantages: Simple setup, Instructions easy to hear while driving

...Bought one for Christmas (£99 from carphonewarehouse) Setup: Add bateries and turn on. Very easy! Has to be attached to or near a car window to find any satelites - takes a few minutes to do this (havent looked for an external antennae yet though) On turning unit on, we get a prompt telling us that the maps are over a year out of date, and a url where we can go to buy updates. No an impressive start. There is no mapping software provided with the unit - to add or update the maps it seems you need to buy MapSource from Garmin. Add £60 to the price of the unit and suddenly this is starting to look expensive... In use: We've tested this unit around where we live, on a trip to Leicestershire, and on a trip top the Derbyshire Dales. Once it has found the satelites, the unit calculates a route quickly enough. ...Ok when i first saw this unit i was totally amazed. The first time i turned it on i was more amazed at just how clear the screen was. Right the basics. The unit is a full PDA, address, calendar, reminders etc. The standard type of stuff you get on most PDA's. But then.... This unit will also tell you where you are and how to get to just about anywhere you want to go. At a snippet under £600 it's a bargain (there are catches - read on - but it's great). Ok so what do you get? For the £590 you get The unit A usb/charger hotsync cradle European Mapsource cd rom The catches? The unit comes with only 32mb on board memory. You can expand this with a standard secure digital card (SD) but really your going to want at least a 128mb memory card (around £50) that should get you most of the UK onto the unit at full road...

...Ok now this is a great unit. You?ll never get lost again with the Street Pilot III (SP3). You can type in a house number and road name and it?ll take you right to the door with visual and audio navigation. GPS navigation has never been so easy. Ok now there are two versions available the SP3 and the SP3 Deluxe package. I?ll only cover the Deluxe as that?s the one I know. This comes complete with a 128mb data card and the mapsource data cd rom with all the road level detail and unlock code for the whole of Europe (worth about £200 between them). You can get the unit for around the £650 mark at the moment, so it?s worth shopping round to get the right price. But make sure you get the Deluxe is my advice, that data card is very useful, London at full detail is about 8mb!! Ok so what do you get? The SP3 gps unit USB data card...

Sweet pilot - always has a place in our hearts

Advantages: A solid GPS receiver
Disadvantages: Maybe a little outdated now

...The Street Pilot III is one of Garmin's earlier in-car satellite navigation units. Since this they have given us the Street Pilot 2610, 2620, 2550 and 2650 - all with a few advantages. The SP3 Deluxe gives us the benefit of having all the European maps at street level come with it in the box! So it's great for people wanting to travel Europe. The Street Pilot offers all the usual features, voice prompts, automatic re-calculation of route, post code and point of interest look up. Although it is a little bulky compared to newer units such as the TomTom Go. Unfortunately it's not that easy to set up for some people. The maps have to be loaded on the 128Mb Garmin Memory card that comes with the unit using your home computer. This is done using the MapSource software included in the box.
