...The last time I was at the Chateau (I make regular pilgrimages across France looking for good wines -- fewer now, admittedly, being in seminary and having lost much of my income!) was in 1996; the 1993 wines were just beginning to become worthy of sampling, and during a dinner at the estate (something I've been fortunate enough to be invited to several times; but then, working in the British Parliament afforded one certain perks) we were treated to some of the newest products, as well as some of the greater treasures in the cellars. I actually consider it almost a crime to drink a wine before its time (hmmm, whose voice do I hear in the background?), and mostly vintages of Margaux from the 1990s should still be sitting on the shelves gathering greatness; the latest 'greatest' Margaux I've had was a 1988 first growth (which I shall...

Disadvantages: Not Recommended for Non Islay Fans

...The Ardbeg is now owned by Glenmorangie. I opened a bottle of Ardbeg 10 yo non Chill-Filtered Islay Malt and it is now only half left. Glenmorangie knows its whisky. They had done an experiment. They sent a 10 yo and a 18 yo to a perfume house in New York for testing. This perfume house was creating about 2,000 artifial essences for the perfume industry. Their experts identified 22 aromas in the 10 yo and only 17 aromas in the 18 yo. Only six of these aromas are the same in both vintages. So longer time in the barrel may not be better. Contrary to their findings, Glenmorangie has come up with a 18 yo Margaux Finish. Money really makes this worls goes round. A restaurant with rooms

Advantages: The Food
Disadvantages: Not inexpensive

...the quantity of the average Restaurant, The Lamb was cooked to perfection. The Wine List was reasonably priced, Chateau Bottled Margaux only £5 more expensive than at the average wine merchants. The Service was exceptional even down to the complimentary jugs of iced water on the tables. The Home made Treacle Tart was awesome.It has to be said that whilst the hotel rooms may be a little on the expensive side the Restaurant is not and offers real value for money. I have eaten at the 5* Imperial and at the Falcon, whilst the Falcon food wasn't as flash it was every bit as well cooked and prepared and a fraction of the price. The bar food is almost as good. We ate fresh battered fish and home cut chips followed by home made sticky toffee pudding (they had sold out of the treacle tart...) In some ways I view the Falcon as being an excellent...

You get a lot for a Lidl

Advantages: Very functional, great value, lovely chocolate
Disadvantages: Limited range of items

...from finding their 2005 red Bordeaux very mediocre, thin bodied and acidic (no surprise at £2.75 a bottle and destined for the cooking pot). However once my parents did manage to pick up a 2004 Margaux claret for £9.99 which was selling at Oddbins for £15.99 so do keep your eyes peeled for the odd fine wine bargain here.
