Then the exciting young Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev, a recent defector to the West, comes into her life and her bed and revitalizes her career. Frederick Aashton creates a new ballet for them and they become the golden couple of the ballet world. However, Margot is married to Roberto 'Tito' Arias, a Panamanian politician of dubious repute who is not sympathetic to her calling and is probably faithless. La Reine Margot [DVD] [1995]
United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: French ( Dolby Surround ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SPECIAL FEATURES:...... more
United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: French ( Dolby Surround ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: The historical novel by Alexandre Dumas was adapted for the screen with this lavish French epic, winner of 5 Césars and a pair of awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Isabelle Adjani stars as Marguerite de Valois, better known as Margot, daughter of scheming Catholic power player Catherine de Medici (Virna Lisi). Margot is a heiress to the throne during the late 16th century reign of the neurotic, hypochondriac King Charles IX (Jean-Hugues Anglade), a time when Protestants and Catholics are vying for political control of France. Catherine decides to make an overture of good will by offering up Margot in marriage to prominent Protestant Huguenot Henri of Navarre (Daniel Auteuil), although she also schemes to bring about the notorious St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572, when tens of thousands of Protestants are slaughtered. The marriage goes forward but Margot doesn't love Henri and takes a lover, the soldier La Mole (Vincent Perez), also a Protestant from a well-to-do family. Murders by poisoning follow, as court intrigues multiply and Catherine's villainous plotting to place her son Anjou (Pascal Greggory) on the throne threatens the lives of La Mole, Margot and Henri. A small, finely crafted indie drama of true quality, Margot At The Wedding is the latest offering from Noam Baumbach. While his name may not yet cause very many flickers of recognition, anyone who saw his hugely humane, tragicomic masterpiece The Squid And The Whale, will be beating a path to see his latest film. And they wont be disappointed. Margot At The Wedding tells the story of two estranged sisters. Theres Nicole Kidmans acerbic Margot, a writer, and Jennifer Jason Leighs new-age Pauline. Margot is ostensibly taking her young son to Pauline's wedding, but she's really running from her disastrous marriage. Frosty and overly intellectual on the surface, the two sisters begin to grapple with their veiled feelings and hurtful memories from the past. The film provides the foundation for a deep and often painful exploration of the insecurities, idiosyncrasies and challenges of family life.Interspersing comedy with drama, Margot At The Wedding is a quiet yet highly notable achievement. Kidman is in terrific, neurotic, form in the titular role, and Jack Black pops up in a serious supporting role as the depressed groom to be. Behind the camera, Baumbach more than delivers, with his succinct film coming in at a lean 89 minutes. Make no mistake: Baumbach is one to watch. For now, let us offer up Margot At The Wedding as the latest evidence. --Jon Foster ... less

Disadvantages: A fairly large book, takes a while to read
...danced that day. For example, perhaps the performer was sad, so the gracefulness she demonstrated was due to her somber mood. Or anger might have made her enchainment for that performance just that little bit more spikey in quality.
Either way, it was a phrase which I came to agree with extremely. And yet, when somebody bought me Meredith Daneman's written account on the life of Margot Fonteyn, I...

Something About Nothing
Advantages: Great Fleetwood Mac track
Disadvantages: Whiney performances
...I think I might be sick, not ill in the upset tummy style of sick, but mentally ill; I'd better explain. To me Margot At The Wedding is a story about hidden incest, however as I have spent a good chunk of the day arguing the fact with a "gang" of people I'm told this is not the case. I still like to think I know best despite having to back down on a physical argument, I'm going for the incest...
