Aberdeen Maritime Museum
Review of Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Aberdeen by  allyro

Advantages: Excellent museum, my kids love to go every time we visit Aberdeen
Disadvantages: Perhaps not easy to find as it is off the main streets.

...Aberdeen Maritime Museum is located in Ship Row, close to the harbour in a historic area of the city. The importance of the fishing industry in this part of the country is explored along with the oil industry and local shipbuilding. There are loads of interactive exhibits which kids will enjoy and the large oil platform model which stretches over three levels is amazing to see. There are fantastic views out over the harbour area from the top floor of the museum too. The older part of the building - Provost Ross's house is very interesting with it's low ceilings and winding staircases. It houses lots of memorabilia from things like the ferry services and lifeboats. The museum has a small gift shop selling all kinds of sea related gifts, books and toys. The Leading Lights cafe in the basement area serves lovely coffee and cakes... Read review

The National Waterfront Museum, Swansea
Review of The National Waterfront Museum, Swansea, Wales by  Serenfach

Advantages: Free, under cover, very child friendly
Disadvantages: None that I could see

...--LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY-- The National Waterfront Museum is located in Swansea's Maritime Quarter, about 5 minutes walk from the main city centre shops. From outside Swansea, exit the M4 at junction 42 (west) or junction 47 (east) - just keep following the brown signs - the Museum is clearly signposted and is very difficult to miss. There is a large 'pay and display' car park a short distance from the Museum (2 minutes walk). The car park costs £5.00 for a full day. Users of the car park who are visiting the Museum should inform the car park attendant that they intend to use the Museum, whereon you will receive a £3.50 discount voucher redeemable in the Museum's shop on that day. So parking really only costs £1.50 which is very reasonable as there are other things to see close by (Swansea Marina, amusement arcades, shops... Read review

Review of The Town Docks Maritime Museum Hull by  grafter123

Advantages: Free entrance , educational , lovely building , interesting
Disadvantages: As always could be bigger to house more of its collection

...HULL CITY COUNCIL MUSEUMS * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The free entrance museums and art gallery in Kingston-Upon-Hull are all maintained , run and funded through the Leisure Services Department of the local council . The Maritime Museum until the early seventies was housed in a small museum based at Pickering Park Hull . This was away from the city centre on the road to Hessle . I remember this museum as a child in the fifties . Of course at that time it looked vast but really it was quite compact . In the grounds were whalebones ; relics of our bygone fishing days , when Hull was a huge port .In the sixties Hull was the third largest port in England . Hard to believe now . As fishing declined I suppose the powers that be saw the importance of preserving artefacts from that past . How right they were... Read review

Dive in
Review of Estonian Maritime Museum by  JVL

Advantages: Great location, viewing platform on top of museum, cheap to get in
Disadvantages: Not much is translated into English

...Much has been written about the attractions of Tallinn, an undeniably beautiful and well-preserved city, and I was lucky enough to have the chance to take in the sights of the old town recently. While wandering around the picture postcard streets, I stumbled across this interesting museum totally by chance - despite its situation in one of the most well-known parts of the old fortifications, the tower known as Paks Margareeta ('Fat Margaret'), which is mentioned in most guidebooks for the Estonian capital, you'd be forgiven for walking right past without giving it a second glance. Whereas is many other cities, museums vie with one another to catch passing tourists, the maritime museum here does not really go in for much in the way of advertising! Added to that are the curious opening times of the museum: it's closed on Mondays... Read review

Yo Ho Ho And A Bottle Of Rum
Review of Maritime Museum of Ireland by  the_mad_cabbie

Advantages: See text of opinion
Disadvantages: See text of opinion

...~ ~ I’ve lived here in Dublin for over twenty years now, and it was only recently that I discovered that this small museum, the Maritime Museum of Ireland, even existed. I was stuck out in a seaside suburb of Dublin, Dun Loghaire, (where the ferries from Holyhead in Wales arrive) waiting for a fare to the airport in my taxi, and with an hour to kill. So the weather being rather pleasant, (a rare enough occurrence this year!) I parked up and went for a wee wander to take the sea air. ~ ~ The Maritime Museum is located in an old church called (wait for it) the Mariner’s Church, up a small side street called Haigh Terrace, just off the Dun Loghaire main street, and right beside the side entrance to one of the main hotels in the village, the Royal Marine. The old church has a bit of history attached to it. It was opened... Read review

Are you a fan of the Fan Museum?
Review of Fan Museum, Greenwich by  duskmaiden

Advantages: good shop, a small but good collection
Disadvantages: small, not a children's museum

...A fashionable woman in the past needed a number of accessories, shoes, hat, and a fan. recently reviewed Stockport's hat museum. So I thought I would also review the Greenwich Fan Museum as it would compliment the previous review nicely. The Fan Museum at Greenwich is the first and only museum to be dedicated to fans. It was founded by Helene Alexander in 1991 to share her life long passion for the subject. She has a collection of 3500 objects which are not all on show at the same time due to the fragility of many of the fans. It's housed in two adjoining skilfully restored Georgina houses on Royle Hill in the centre of Greenwich. The museum is just opposite the north western corner of Greenwich Park just round the corner from the Maritime Museum. It is easily accessed by public transport as a number of bus services run very near... Read review

One of my favourite museums - completely rewritten
Review of National Museum, New Delhi by  koshkha

Advantages: A nice little museum full of goodies
Disadvantages: A tad old-fashioned perhaps

...A National Treasure One of the first reviews I wrote when I joined ciao was about the National Museum in Delhi. As an early review it was, quite honestly, pretty awful. I hadn't got the hang of ciao at that time and looking back, I'm pretty embarrassed about the stuff I wrote. However, I can't let my own vanity get in the way and I want to update that first review because I believe that this museum is a little gem and should get more tourist attention than it does. If you are looking at the ratings on the review and thinking 'they are a bit harsh' bear in mind they may have been placed for the original review which thankfully, very few people ever read. Where is it? *********** The National Museum is on Janpath, the main street running south from Connaught Place, it's down at the 'quiet end' of this famous street, just past... Read review

Review of National Maritime Museum, Falmouth, Cornwall by  werewolf

Advantages: can revisit as much as you like within a year
Disadvantages: can be dark in places, not enough seating near boat lake

...National Maritime Museum, Discovery Quay, Falmouth Cornwall is open daily 10 till 5 according to the Cornwall 07 Guide www.theguide-cornwall.com leaflet that we picked up whilst in Cornwall. Open 7 days a week except Christmas Day and Boxing Day, according to King Harry's Cornwall 2007 Guidebook www.kingharryscornwall.co.uk. Costa Dorada, Princess Maritim Hotel
Review of Princess Maritim Hotel, Salou by  ilusvm

Advantages: beautiful, lovely weather, port aventura, aquaopolis, day trips to barcelona, cheap, safe area, bonavista market, close to airport
Disadvantages: rush for sunbeds in the morning!

...is part of port aventura, which was enjoyable but involved a great deal of queing and sunburn! There were plenty more activities offered by both the hotel and the area, such as swimming with sea lions and a variety of sports. HOTEL: The Princess Maritim hotel is the best hotel i have ever stayed in, although only 3 stars it feels like at least four. The hotel is immaculately clean and tastefully decorated, several computers with internet access are in reception which are cheap to use and one includes a webcam. The swimming pool and hotels facilities were ideal for all the family. The only slight disadvantage is that there was a mad rush for sunbeds by the pool in the morning but being a minutes walk away from the beach this was not too much of a problem. The food was well presented although slightly bland but this is to be expected when... Read review
