Zagreb's colourful market
Advantages: Fascinating, colourful, might get to sample some Croatian foods, shop for a picnic
Disadvantages: Can't buy some things if you're in a hotel
...Dolac is Zagreb?s very colourful central fresh produce market. It is situated in the area just behind Trg Bana Jelacic and you can access it though a small lane where you see the flower market start. The market was opened in 1930, having been built on the site of a slum clearance; it was agreed by the city's bigwigs that the houses there were not a fitting sight for visitors to a capital city and so they were duly demolished. I was delighted to read that in his speech at the opening of the market, the mayor of Zagreb Dr. Stjepan Srkulj said "?During my visit to Holland this year, ladies and gentlemen, I can honestly say that I did not see a market that was as nice as this...? - and, you know, it is rather special.
Beyond the flower market you can either climb the stone steps to the market proper or go into the main indoor section...

A Bit of Culture in the Market Place
Advantages: Great variety of entertainment on offer. Generally cheaper prices than larger venues
Disadvantages: The length of the trek to the loos! Not the most comfortable seating
...The Old Market Hove is a place which is difficult to label! It?s an historical building of some note, a theatre, a cultural centre, a venue for private hire catering for all sorts of events including weddings and civil partnerships, a recording studio, home to the celebrated Hanover Band and a base for Springboard, a competitive performing arts festival for young people. In fact it is a wonderful and invaluable community resource just a stone?s throw from the sea in The Brunswick area of Hove but just on the Brighton border.
~~~BRUNSWICK TOWN~~~
The area now known as Brunswick is, for me, one of the most fascinating areas of Hove. Brunswick Town was largely the brainchild of the Reverend Thomas Scutt whose family owned much of the land upon which it was built and Charles Augustin Busby, a talented architect who was responsible...
To market, to market
Advantages: Hustle, bustle, colour, bargains
Disadvantages: Variable quality, not so good for souvenirs
...What, would you say, is that curious-looking building depicted in the photo at the top of this page?
Of course, quick as a flash, you are likely to reply ?Riga Central Market?, having cunningly read the caption beside it. And you?d be part right. No more than part right because it is only one of five almost identical buildings that house just the indoor section of the market, with ? in the summer at least ? another area of similar size for stalls outside. And only part right because they weren?t built as market halls at all, but as hangars for First World War zeppelins. This is among the original features that enhance the character of what would in any case be one of Europe?s largest and liveliest public markets.
* In praise of markets *
Let me confess at the outset that I?m an absolute sucker for markets. Not...
The Cattle Market
Advantages: Nowhere else on earth has more multiculturalism packed into one place
Disadvantages: These days it's little more than a tourist attraction.
...shoppers in their bid to escape the tube]
Me (with you sitting on my back): Grrrr.
Ok, so once you've battled your way out of the tube, you turn right. You could turn left and cross a junction where you will definitely, defintely be run over, but after that it's all newsagents and Argos' (what is the plural of Argos anyway?). So it's right we go, and we are on the right hand side of the road. Usually you will be met by people with silly hair, handing out leaflets for tattoo studios. After ignoring these, the first few shops you come to are little stalls, mainly selling sunglasses and stripey gloves, all with that fresh marijuana scent. Obviously, you won't have come all the way here just to go this far, so we'll soldier on. You have a shoe shop, a gothy leather shop, a shoe shop, and then Camden Market proper. It's pretty good actually...
On your marks get set for Greenwich Market
Advantages: intersting products, something for everyone, great for gifts
Disadvantages: Not a practical market
...London is a city full of markets from the carnivorous delight that is Smithfields to alternative teenagers all locking the same favourite Camden market. I like a number of the markets but I am a south east London girl and my heart belongs to Greenwich Market. If I have to buy a present for my nearest and dearest it is one of my first points of call in London.
Greenwich Market is located in the hear of Maritime Greenwich two minutes walk from the river Thames and Cutty Sark DLR station. Its not immediately obvious just look or the archways and alleyways in College Approach, Nelson Street, Greenwich Church Street and William IV Street that surround the market and head down them. You'll find your self in a historic marketplace dating back to 1832 when the market was a practical market selling foodsuffs.
The market is open from...
Borough Market - 250 years of food heaven
Advantages: Fresh produce, lots of choice.
Disadvantages: Can spend too much money.
...The first time I went to Borough Market I was dragged there under duress by the Boyf. We'd been along to the Summer Festival on London Bridge and then he said he was going to show me a market that I'd like, I was apprehensive but within minutes of arriving I was marveling at the sites and smells of all the amazing produce on sale. Since then I've been back numerous times on a Thursday and Friday lunchtime to stock up on various goodies. Of course, I can't possibly list everything there - it's seriously extensive - but trust me, if you like food and drink then you'll love Borough Market and all its nooks and crannies.
~ Location ~
London Bridge Station is the closest, not even one minute walk away so don't go getting off at Borough Station which is seriously misleading!
Once you leave L.B. Station, you will be...
Running on Black Market Blood?
Advantages: The bands most versatile album to date; crosses genres quite well
Disadvantages: There are bland moments to behold and some messages are a bit hazy
...expected it to be from the first time they wrote an album and the coming down period after their drug fuelled rages was another difficult element to contend with.
Following nine months in the studio, 'Black Market Music' was released in the October of 2000 with the promise that it would be a lot less about lead singer Brian Molko's own personal shortcomings and more about telling a story through an array of characters, a notion that was to certainly be expanded on from 1998's album. Not being aware of the band back when it was first release, in all of my innocent glory, it wasn't until a couple of years ago when I received this album.
It has to be said that I wasn't instantly captivated by 'Black Market Music'; I'd adored 'Sleeping With Ghosts' - the follow up record to this one - and thought that the dynamic of 'Placebo' was a good...
A nose around the market.
Advantages: A great day out.
Disadvantages: Did not see any.
...from all directions but the roads had plenty of pelican crossings. There were food shops galore which tickled my nostrils. I was pleased that I had told my friend not to bring a packed lunch with her today.
Still following my nose - as I had left the address at home, we walked on. Yes, I have had a pretty heavy schedule this last week, I knew the name of the road had two oo's in it! However we found a delightful clothes shop where I purchased a super outfit for my sister's party - I digress!
After that little shopping spree we decided we would eat. There was one part of the market where there were stalls selling a variety of foods. Thai, Indian, Mexican. We decided on the Mexican and had a lovely little snack outside sitting at the tables. Very cheap at £4 each. We sat there for two hours, just watching people come and go and having...
The Sheffield Castle Markets
Advantages: Some Good Bargains
Disadvantages: Ready For A Refurb
...Castle Market is the largest of Sheffield's Markets and houses a large collection of Shops and Stalls selling a wide range of different Goods.
This large indoor Market is built on the site of Sheffield Castle and there are many ruins and tunnels beneath this Market which are opened up to the Public on special occasions, usually only once or twice a year. These tunnels link the former Sheffield Castle ,built in 1266 but largely demolished in 1648 during the English Civil War, with the Manor Castle and other important historic Buildings within the City.
The location of the present day Castle Market is on the banks of the River Don, directly on top of where the Castle once stood. Just a few minutes walk from the main Bus Interchange and Railway Station.
Sadly nothing now remains of the former Castle above ground and the infrequent...
Don't be a prawn - visit the fish-market
Advantages: Looks great, get tasty free samples, handy for ferry passengers
Disadvantages: Very expensive, quality of some goods not good
...The fisketorget or fish-market is, as far as tourism is concerned, the heart of the Norwegian city of Bergen. The city grew in importance thanks to the fishing industry and you will see reminders of this all over Bergen.
These days the fish-market is something of a tourist trap. I have heard many people say that the people of Bergen do not buy their fish and seafood here as it more expensive than at other outlets. That said, if the locals don't buy it, who does? You can't cook it in your hotel and you're not really supposed to take it home on the plane. Fortunately a few items can be bought in vacuum packs which I believe can be carried in the hold.
The actual fish market is much smaller than in the past. Now the fish sellers share their market with other traders selling jams and sauces made with Scandinavian berries, traditional...
