Marrakesh magic

Advantages: A really foreign experience

...Jaded with trips abroad? Fed up with touristy jaunts? Try out Marrakesh for a real taste of what travelling must have once been like. We went on a 2 week package to Agadir, and, growing tired of the beach culture yet not wanting to buy into a packaged bus trip, we booked ourselves on the (real) bus to Marrakesh for a few days - really cheap, 70 dirhams, about £4.50 each way. The trip was easy - about 4 and a half hours on an air-conditioned bus, dropping us at the bus station on the outskirts of the Old City. We were mobbed by petit taxi drivers offering to take us to our destination, and took one of them up on it - a 'riad' (meaning old merchant's house which has been done up) just off the famous square of Djema el Fnaa. i had a blast at the tamkast

Advantages: friendly stafff and lovely towels
Disadvantages: not enough rooms to invite my entire family

...Where do i start? i mean really. well if you are looking for accomodation to match the stunning beauty of marrakesh then you are looking in the right direction. this traditional style accomodation in the heart of the city is a joy to abide in. i can only say that staying in the Tamkast enhanced every aspect of my experience. the staff were so friendly and accomodating in every instance, even when i had a problem with the towels in my room being too small, they graciously offered me new towels which quite honestly were a little on the large side but filled my need. the rooms are tastefully decorated and adequately furnished and the view from the rooftop terrace was outstanding. you know, morroco isnt known for its chilly winds and it can get a little humid down there but our rooms were equipt with a fantastic air conditioning...

Essential Essaouira

...Marrakesch in Morocco is a wonderful place to visit but sometimes the hustle and bustle of this colourful city can just get too much. When this happens you need to escape the city and what better place to escape to than Essaouira, a lovely, peaceful town on Morocco's Atlantic coast. Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador is a fishing port with a Portuguese citadel and an 18th century Medina (old town ) which is a UNESCO world heritage site. It was a firm favourite with sixties musicians such as Janis Joplin and Jimmy Hendrix and is still a favourite with me due to its charm. . We visited it as a day trip during a weeks holiday in Marrakesh. We were captivated by its pretty whitewashed buildings and the fine golden beach leading to the blueness of the Atlantic Ocean. Mastichari Summer 2008

Advantages: Staff worked their bumms off
Disadvantages: Got to use Greek roads to get there

...July-mid Aug08. The staff really did their absolute best. This isn't a 4* Geneva, 4* Marrakesh or 4* London... it's 4* Greece. But dont be put off, its a blissful location and you'll get all you really do need to feel like you have had just had one of the most relaxing vacations to date! The village is on the doorstep and not full on tourist hell; there is charm abound and genuine goodwill towards visitors. Hotel is set in gorgeous gardens, pool guy takes a bit of getting used to as his regime of towel disposal is a bit sharp but it's a very friendly place and you leave there feeling just a little bit sad. Hotel Manager needs a good foot in his behind, blaming outside supplied staff isn't a super path to take when selling your hotel as a family friendly place. Manager of restraunt is one very cool guy, he sees everything...

...the locals. This was a theme that was to repeat its self over and over again. For example the best taxies to get are the yellow ones, if they say their meter is broken get out and walk away. One of these rides around the city should not cost you more that £2-3 any more you are being ripped off! You will need to haggle at all stages of your holiday; even with a printed menu they will try to charge you more. As you can tell we were both very unimpressed with Agadir. Even the hotel would try and rip you off by not bringing back change. One other piece of advice if you are taking traveller checks take larger denominations as you are charged a fixed fee per check no matter if it is £20 or £100. After two days of being badgered to take an expensive trip to Marrakesh and being overcharged and grabbed by angry shop keepers who would scream we were...
