...MASH DIRECT I bet you think 'What a lazy mare!!' when you see that I have bought and used (and quite regularly I may add) ready made mashed potato. But please hold your judgement on me until you have read this review. I first came upon this product about six months ago when I was taking the makings of a sunday lunch 60 miles away to my daughters, I wanted it to be quick and easy to prepeare when we arrived there. I had a roasted ham, a pack of prepared brocolli and cauliflower, a pack of potatoes ready for roasting, some asparagus tips and a pack of cheese sauce mix, then in my local Booth's supermarket I came across the Mash Direct range of vegetables so I bought a pack of ready cooked carrots and parsnip and a pack of the mashed potatoes. Quick & easy mash.

Advantages: Cheap, quick & easy, saves money, gas & time.
Disadvantages: None

...I do like to cook meals from scratch but sometimes there just isn't the time so I like to have a few very fast items in the cupboard such as tinned products and this instant mashed potato so that I can mix together a meal for myself or my other half in a rush. Smash is incredibly easy to make you just measure out the portion as per the instructions on the packet or to make as much mash as you require (everyone is different aren't they - I like a lot, my other half doesn't!) and then you boil the kettle and add hot water, mix it together & hey presto you've got mashed potato. This does come in a few different varieties but I like to buy the original version and then just add a little bit of butter while mixing it together with the hot water to give it a more authentic taste, this is better than the 'buttery' variety that you can get...

for mash get ..real potatoes!!!

Advantages: quick and easy to make up, minimum cleaning up
Disadvantages: they're just not "real" mash

...I love mashed potatoes! However I hate peeling potatoes, mashing the potatoes and cleaning up after potatoes! My mum was the same and I was practically brought up on smash, but for some reason it just dosen't taste the same as it used to do! I decided to give Mr Mash a try after spotting it in a food discount shop for 99p for a large box of approx 15 servings! (Who are they kidding) A large box contain 3 foil sachets and each sachet is supposed to serve 5 portions! Each sachet weighs 120g but there are around 700g of potato in each sachet. It is really easy to make, you simply add the potato which is in a powder form to boiling water. 1 pint of water per sachet of potato mix adda knob off butter and stir leaving you with a not bad looking bowl of mash! Advantages: Easy to make, cheap, tastes nice

...The idea for the title of this review of Smash Potato came from my dad, not me, so he takes the credit! I know this my sound odd to some people, but I really do like the strange taste of Smash Potato. It doesn't taste like real potatoes and obvioulsy the only way you can eat it is in its 'mashed' form, by this, I mean you can't have it in the tradtional whole potato form! It's rehydrated potato, which you make by adding boiled water to it. I'm told that some people don't like the taste and that it tastes artificial. It probably does take a little bit of getting used to, but I actually love it. I like it with instant gravy poured on top and just eat it out of a bowl when I get back from college and I cant be bothered to make anything else. I like it as a comfort food when I'm feeling a bit down and it reminds me of school...

Microwave or potato peeler that is the question

Advantages: Very quick when you have little people wanting something to eat immediately
Disadvantages: a tiny bit pricey - definately compared to potatoes

This was too much for one but not enough for 2. So when out shopping one day we saw that Aunt Bessie does mash potato and although this was more expensive you could use as little or as much as you wanted at a time. Aunt Bessies Mash potato comes in 900g bags and at the moment costing around £2.00. Inside are 5cm circular or puck size pieces 1cm thick.I am not sure how many are in there but it is at least 25. Now instant mash I have you know is not the tastiest or healthiest way of eating potatoes-but guess what;If you are looking for the retention of GOODNESS as opposed to processed chunk of the usual smash,then this really isn't a bad buy! ...Anyone familiar with the technique of mixing wallpaper paste will be gratified to know that they are in a good position to produce a semi-solid dollop of something which (to the untrained palate) might well pass as mashed potato. All that is required is a box of MR MASH instant potato flakes, 1 pint of boiling water, and a bucket to mix it in. For some peculiar reason, I bought a box of MR MASH in KwikSave last week. It only cost 40p, because a previous shopper had tampered with the box, causing massive damage. I understand the normal price to be around twice that sum. The packaging of this item is uninspiring ? to the point of being off-putting. Smashing Mash in an Instant!

Advantages: Takes a whole minute, tastes good, easy to make, light in weight....
Disadvantages: Can get lumpy if you don't make it properly....

...SMASH is exactly what it says on the tin "Mash in a Minute". In it's bright red packaging, The word SMASH is splashed across the front in a kinda smooth bubble writing, in a mash potato colour I suppose. As if someone just piped the word smash onto a stripe of blue stuck onto the red packaging. There's also a picture of your SMASH as part of a meal, with a sausage and some peas... hmmm.... For the purposes of accuracy, I should probably mention that I'm going to talk about the 350g tin of this instant goodness, but they also come in 100g sachets. I love SMASH so much! I re-discovered it when I had to escort my dear brother to the supermarket to stock up on easy-to-carry-but-nutricious food for his Duke of Edinburgh trip. Disadvantages: Spoilt for choice for how to use them

No Smash Hit But OK In An Emergency

...Did you know that every potato is peeled then cooked in steam which helps to retain the flavour and then the potatoes are dried and formed into flaky pieces for your convenience? I can see that you don't look impressed and I don't really blame you! But I will tell you that the Smash makes a pretty decent fishcake. Just last week I was racking my brains trying to think of something different for supper. Bingo! Home made fish cakes, then I looked in the vegetable rack and groaned, not a potato in sight, OK if you counted the hairy ones that had some six inch sprouts I had four! I am no big fan of anything instant really but if push comes to shove and I have it to hand then all well and good. After all if I was using the instant mash to make fishcakes then it is highly unlikely that the Other Half would even notice the difference...
