Massive Attack have lost their way.
Advantages: Sound design. Interesting soundscapes. Sinead O'Connor.
Disadvantages: Melodic content non existent. Slightly dodgy production in areas.
...Where are the tunes guys? What happened to the catchy riffs that made your songs instantly recognisable?
There are more questions than answers on this album - the most pressing being - 'What has happened to Massive Attack'
Massive Attack's albums are great listening experiences (before this one) - in particular Mezzanine. And their singles (before the singles from this album) were very memorable - most noticeably Teardrop - from Mezzanine.
On this album - there is nothing memorable, because it all sounds so 'samey'.
Massive Attack are great at creating soundscapes - and that is something they have achieved very well on this album as well. The problem with this album - is that there is not a lot on top of those soundscapes - it's all very well doing sound design - but you have to have something that interest the ears...

Massive As A Heart Attack!
Advantages: Every single thing that is right with music on a CD
Disadvantages: Doesn't have every Massive Attack song on it ever made
...Corr blimey! Imagining quite who wouldn't want to listen to the sonic perfection of Massive Attack is possibly beyond me.
Massive Attack have always been a part of my life, although an indirect one, as my mother was a very big fan of all their releases, but it was not until litrally a couple of weeks ago it truly dawned on me the beauty of their work.
I was sat in a hot sweaty exam room with 13 other students taking my AS level Music Technology exam, when I turned the page and the next track on the prompt CD began playing Teardrop to my humble ears.
For a few minutes, I actually had to stop answeting questions, to simply sit and take this track in properly. I was blown away with a feeling of self worth and accomplishment, when all I had done was listen to my exam piece?
Surely no band (especially one frm Bristol, home...

Massive attack on a peace trip
Advantages: Classicly laid tracks with depth for all occasions.
Disadvantages: None woth mentioning
...If you've ever heard the strings from 'Unfinshed Symphony' from Massive Attack's debut album 'Blue Lines' then it's likely to be something that'll stay with you until your memory begins to fade for the last time.
After all, we're not getting any younger! But Blue Lines has to be one of the few albums that actually CAN make time stand still, float before you and wiggle it's backside to the delicious melodrama playing out before you.
Coming from Bristol, they have been the catalyst for the careers of a number of other shining lights including Tricky & Portishead. They have also collaberated with a bewildering number of other musicians since including Liz Frazer (of the Cocteau Twins), Tracy Thorn (from Everything But the Girl), Sinead O'Conner (who needs no introduction), Horace Andy and Nellee Hooper to name but a few.
When they...

Truly Massive
Advantages: essential selection
Disadvantages: maybe a few too many fillers
...For What You've Got
15) Sly
16) Protection
17) Karmacoma
18) Risingson
19) Teardrop
20) Angel
21) Inertia Creeps
22) Special Cases
23) Butterfly Caught
24) Live With Me
25) Live With Me (performance version)
26) False Flags
The problem with Massive Attack is that they have recorded some of the seminal tracks of the last twenty years and when you put virtually anything next to the likes of "Protection" or "Unfinished Sympathy" it can only compare unfavourably.
In essence the first audio CD contains all the really good tunes, the two above, "Safe from Harm", "Angel", "Teardrop", "Live with me", "Five man Army" and "Sly".
The second CD contains some more thoughtful and less immediate numbers "Incantations", "I Against I" and "Danny the Dog" being the stand-out tracks, this CD is a more difficult listen than...

...Massive Attack ~ Blue Lines
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I thought I would start my music reviews with the album which despite being 14 years old I still consider to be the best album ever to hit the streets of this fair country. Blue Lines was released in 1991 to a somewhat muted response, as with so many new groups, as they had no reputation, outside their home town of Bristol. At that point in time I was enjoying the early years of my mis-spent youth, driving round the streets of Manchester with my mates till the sun came up, visiting underground clubs, shady pool halls and 24hr café’s. One night someone produced a tape called Blue Lines which was played to utter silence and chilled ecstasy, The tape never left my car and was played at least once a night for about 2 years. Needless to say I never gave the tape back, it didn’t matter we...
Go on, Attack yourself...!
Advantages: Get fit, get toned, shape up, start enjoying exercise
Disadvantages: A lot of sweat is usually involved
...Before I go any further, for sample clips of a class and more info, go to: www.squidoo.com/bodyattack
INTRODUCTION:
The idea of going along to something called 'Body Attack' doesn't sound incredibly appealing, does it? Well, let me tell you, once you've had a go, the sense of achievement and sense of 'you've done something that is good for you', makes you feel GRRrrrreat. So, what is it?...Body Attack is a high energy, intense cardio vascular exercise programme (created by fitness company, BTS) that is run in many gyms across the UK.
THE PROGRAMME:
The programme is specially designed by BTS (Body Training Systems, which are part of The Les Mills company). Basically, they create the exercise routines (or 'programmes' as they known) and train instructors across the UK, how to teach them, who then in turn, run...
Unsinkable Attack
Advantages: Clever plot, twists and turns
Disadvantages: Not as funny as previous work
...which are being carried out in order to set up a seat for Psychic research at the local university. He is stumped when Lafayette seems to be passing all of the tests and can't seem to work out what scam he is running.....
This is a fairly clever story and looks at the scams that psychics employ to trick people into parting with their money. There are also some attacks on popular press and politicians which is generally to be expected from Brookmyre.
Although the book was enjoyable enough, it just wasn't as funny as his other work (in my opinion). The black humour is still present but it just didn't grab me as his books normally do. "A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away" had me laughing aloud on the train and although this was funny it just wasn't the same type of humour.
I still enjoyed reading this book but for me it wasn't his best and I'm glad...
Rat Attack!
Advantages: Good idea for a game, easy controls.
Disadvantages: Poor sound effects and music, not so good graphics.
Two rats that were sent off in a rocket for a scientific experiment have returned, Washington and Jefferson are now equiped with alien technology to help them create a rat army. The Scratch Cats are a feline freedom group who are sent to stop the pests before the world is over run with them.
The game is in arcade style and you play as one of the scratch cats, there are over fifty levels (yes you heard right...) filled with rat destroying fun. Bristol Beat
Advantages: Unfinished Sympathy (best single ever, no contest)
Disadvantages: None
...'Blue Lines' is regarded as one of the classic albums of the 1990's. Not easy to catergorise, it combines a vast array of musical styles from hip-hop beats to classical violins. Massive Attack's first album was released to wide critical acclaim in 1991, although commercially it has failed to ever reach the Top 10. Interestingly, it has continued to sell consistently highly since their second album was released in 1995.
The first release from the album was 'Unfinished Sympathy'. Like the album, this also failed to reach the Top 10, and only hit #13. Despite this relatively modest success, it is considered a timeless piece of music, and is still heard in clubs and on the radio today. It is also regularly voted as being the best single of all time by many magazines and radio stations. An eclectic mix of musical styles, 'Unfinished...
To The Beat
Advantages: Flawless Chillout Trip Hop
Disadvantages: None for people who like Trip Hop
...Bristol. It's not particularly well known for its exciting exports. Infact, as I sit here, I can only think about a half a dozen. And they aren?t very exciting either. Let me summarise on these before I move on. Bristol is a word describing a ladies front bits, derived from the belief that the women in Bristol were sayed to be better endowed than other ports in the country. Secondly is Casualty, a slightly cheesy hospital TV drama that is beginning to have too many bumpkinified Bristol actors in it.
Hmmm. That?s about where my list ends, but I did miss out one fairly important thing there; Trip-Hop. There are a few bands which can be accredited with ?inventing? the genre Trip Hop. Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky are probably the artists you are most likely to have heard of, and though they are credited with being its...
