Mattel Shake and Go Mater Pixar Cars

Advantages: Very durable. Simple to use.

...This is one of Mattel's motorised Shake and Go toys from the Pixar CGI film "Cars" which are released under the Fisher Price banner. The film is incredibly popular with children of all ages and the merchandise is still selling well years after the film was released in the cinema. This toy in particular is Mater, a tow truck who befriends Lightning McQueen when he arrives in Radiator Springs. The toy has a reasonably good likeness to the character from the film. However, like the other toys in this line, the design is stylised, presumably to accommodate the mechanism inside. When you shake the car from side to side an engine start-up noise is heard. You insert 4 AAA batteries in the place under the saddle, and then without further ado, once you push the switch onto the "on" position, Tawny should make clopping and neighing sounds, and walk around the place. She can't walk on carpets, just hard floors, so is a no go area for anyone with a carpeted house. Kaboodl: The new duo for Uno?

Advantages: Is easy to travel with, doesn't require many tactics

...Kaboodl, K'baam, K'bosh! These are the words you need to know to play this card game. We got our edition of Kaboodl free when we bought a new pack of Uno cards on holiday last summer. We're huge games fans, especially Uno so when we saw this made from the same makers, Mattel, we were very optimistic that it would be a really good game. Our Uno game had to be replaced as after many years of travelling and playing in hotel bars, it was a bit grubby! Like Uno, it comes in the same size of packaging (double pack of playing cards) and you only need the special playing cards to play so it's ideal to travel with as it doesn't take up any room. We had to immediately fill up the bottle, and she found it easy to feed the cat. We have found that if the cat is over fed, then she just kind os wees at will, with no pressing required, and a quick glance at the instructions does show that there is a warning about it. Luckily the water bottle is so tiny and the cat's capacity for water so small, that this is a problem which doesn't cause water damage. The cat also finds it difficult to wee in the tray, which isn't surprising because the tray is so small, so we are working on her aim! There is plenty of scope for imaginative play, and Barbie has now joined the other Barbies giving the added scope of their being a household pet rather than just horses as we...

Dinoco Helicopter

...The Disney Cars Dinoco Helicopter is part of the Disney Cars range and is made by Mattel. It retails at £20 from the disney shop but is often cheaper on the high street and internet, around £15. It comes part boxed so that the kids can mess with it on the shelf in the shops! It was given to my four year old son as a gift and comes with a truck inside. The truck is the Mater character, a tow truck. At the end of the film Mater gets to ride in the Dinoco helicopter and this is where this toy originates from. The main feature is the little grey button at the side of the helicopter door, when this is pushed the door flips down and Mater drops out saying phrases from the film. It doesn't sound like much but to a car mad four year old it's pretty good fun! The helicopter is a good size for the price, its about 30cm long by 15cm...

Twirling princess

Now that the 12 Dancing Princesses frenzy has abated, it can be picked up for a lot cheaper than this. ~~Made by~~ Mattel... those well known Barbie makers ~~What I thought~~ Firstly, as with all Barbies, it was difficult to unpack- their hair always seems to tangle in all that wire! Then, unlike the normal Barbies, this one needed mum to insert the batteries before it could be played with. Little Miss found the doll fairly impressive for a short length of time, but after a while the novelty of the skirt lighting up and the very slow twirl did wear thin. Genevieve is now relegated to being a "normal" Barbie and is played with like the others. in fact, I do believe she is less important in our household because she can't even go in the bath...
