With Or Without You - Carole Matthews

Advantages: Amazing story, paints a great picture, believable characters!
Disadvantages: None!!!!!!

... WITH OR WITHOUT YOU CAROLE MATHEWS Carole Matthews is one of my favourite authors. Since reading a couple of her books; A compromising position, and A whiff of scandal, I have really got into her writing. This is the most recent of all her books which I have read and I am looking forward to reading many more. Her books remind me of Belinda Jones work (I love Capri, Diva Las Vegas, The Love Acadamy), whose books I also love. Plot: When Jake tells Lyssa their 4 year relationship is over, she is devastated. Their relationship has been though and stressful recently with the IVF tretment but what had she doen to deserve this? Lyssa soon discovers Jakes real reason for the break up in the form of Everest climbing Neeve, his co-worker. Lyssa is determined to get him back but with everyone telling her she is...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

More Matthew Bartholomew!

Advantages: Good characters, lots of twists and turns
Disadvantages: Can drag out a bit

..."The Tarnished Chalice" is the twelfth book in the Matthew Bartholomew series by Susanna Gregory. The series has run to fourteen chronicles now and number fifteen is due in June this year. It is set in 14th Century Cambridge and revolves around Dr Matthew Bartholomew who helps to solve murders/mysteries by inspecting bodies, usually at the request of his good friend Brother Michael. I first discovered Susanna Gregory and the Matthew Bartholomew chronicles a few years ago and have read them sporadically - usually in no particular order. The books are easy enough to read as stand alone books although they are part of a series, but they are generally more enjoyable when read in sequence. By this, the twelfth book, the reader will usually be familiar with the characters but I will give a broad overview. In this book, Michael...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Good old Bernard Matthews

Advantages: Quick and easy to cook
Disadvantages: You will smell of garlic.

...Bernard Matthews Mini Kievs are always a favourite in our house, quick and easy to cook, goes with almost anything and my girls love them. ~A Bit of History~ Bernard Matthews has been round since the 1950?s and started with one man just producing turkey eggs, to date they now farm 8 million turkeys every year just in the UK. There first advert was shown on T.V in 1980 and in 1988 Mini Kievs where first introduced to the UK ~What are they~ The are small round balls made out of chopped 100% turkey breast, covered in bread crumbs with a creamy cheese and herb sauce in the centre so when you cut into it the sauce oozes out, delicious. These are low in cholesterol and they are high in protein and also have minerals and vitamins within them, so ideal as a quick meal. ~How to cook them~ There are 3 ways to cook them...

Wam, bam, thank you Matthew!

Advantages: Ever wanted to read an action film? This is it....
Disadvantages: not much characterisation, but who has time to think about that in this book!

...Ice Station is Matthew Reilly's second novel, but first with a full release (his first was self published in Australia, has since been commercially released and was called "The Contest") Ice Station introduces Shane Schofield, US Marine, later to appear in two further novels, and sends him and his fellow marines on a rollercoaster ride through Antartica. As Reilly says himself Ice Station is an action film in book form. There is very little characterisation, instead you have action setpiece after action setpiece. The danger starts from the very beginning and jumps up a notch again and again. Everytime you think Schofield and his marines have survived the most dangerous situation they could up pops another one. This sounds as if it would make an awful read but it doesn't. It is written in such a way that you do get to like...

Getting rid of Matthew

Advantages: Easy to read, interesting storyline
Disadvantages: Unlikeable characters, a little predictable

...I didn't think I would enjoy this book as I had recently "Killing Helen" by Sarah Challis which is in a similar vein to Getting rid of Matthew, so having picked it up and started to read it I promptly put it down again thinking it would too "samey". After a few weeks I decided I would give it a go and I'm glad I did as its so funny. Basically the story is about Helen who has an affair with her boss Matthew. After 4 years of sneaking around, matthew finally decides to leave his wife and move in with Helen. The only thing Helen has to do now is figure out how to finish it with Matthew! A nice easy read, if you like "chick lit" you will find it a good read. I found the subject quite interesting, and I guess a lot of "other women" could relate to the story. I did find the characters a little unlikeabloe and thought Helen was...

Review of Getting Rid of Matthew - Jane Fallon

Getting Rid of Matthew!!

Advantages: Has so many!!

Review of The Monk - Matthew Lewis

More to Matthews than this...

Advantages: The characters are quite realistic, good style of writing.
Disadvantages: The ending wasn't what I expected.

...I'm sure you will have read other opinions of this book and I'm afraid I'll have to agree on some points and disagree on others. Matthew's comes from Merseyside and writes with a similar style as Helen Fielding the author of the much famed "Briget Jones's Diary." If you've read the books or seen the movie you'll know what to expect from this author. I don't consider this to be one of Carole Matthews best novels. She has written "For Better, For Worse," "A Whiff of Scandal," "Let's Meet on Platform 8" and "A Minor Indecretion." All of which I think have a more capturing storyline. I think it's interesting to see aspects of Matthew's life emerge in her writing. For example in A Whiff of Scandal her main character is an aromatherapist and she titles each chapter with the name of an essential oil, which is quite clever. She then...
