Mavica Magic!

Advantages: Built to last forever, 10x optical zoom lens
Disadvantages: Hard to see LCD display in sunlight

...I bought my Mavica FD75 around 2 years ago after using, and being very impressed with, an older (FD71?) model at my workplace. By current standards the FD75 is something of a dinosaur and is quite bulky due to it using floppy discs for recording images. The maximum image size that can be saved is 640 x 480 pixels which equates to approx 0.3 megapixels. If you want to print your photos then the absolute maximum size you could hope for would be 6x4", though to be quite honest I've never printed my shots. So why did I buy the FD75? Well, the older Mavica model I'd used at work had proved to be bullet-proof over a number of years heavy useage by many users. The advantage of the FD75 over it's predecessor is the 10x zoom lens(optical, not digital zoom). Normally I use Olympus SLR cameras for my photography but I decided to enter...

Mavica - good but pricey

Advantages: floppy disk storage
Disadvantages: expensive

...The Sony Mavica digital camera is a VGA camera with an intelligent flash. What I like about this one is the you can store your pictures on a floppy disk which you put into the back of the camera. They say that you can get up to 40 pictures on one floppy disk, but unless you select 'fine mode', where you can only store 20, the picture quality is not particularly good. It has six different modes of 'auto-exposure' which to be perfectly honest I don't really understand - the manual was not much help here. It's a nice, good-looking, compact digital camera but I'm still not totally convinced of the results. It's also a rather expensive at £450. Please remember to rate this opinion before you leave. ...Brilliant, user friendly Digital camera! Well done Sony. Chose FD 90 over FD 85. Mavica range was recommended by existing users and I did not consider any other manufacturers. The most difficult task was to choose from the Mavica range. This camera's greatest attribute is recording to floppy disk. No hassle transfers to PC. Camera also has a disk copying feature for on the spot copying. Excellent for web site creation or e-mail transmission of images. Has 16X digital zoom. One of the main purchase criteria for a digital camera was the ability to also have a wide angle lens. This was available as an extra but not many cameras have this option which is essential for internal shots, etc. Various filters are also available of which I also ordered two and a reasonable range of accessories for this camera appears in Sony's catalogue. The non technical viewpoint

Advantages: Easy to use, see the photographs straight away.

Everyone doing opinions of this type would, naturally enough, veer towards the technical capabilities of the item in question, in fact Dave has already done an excellent opinion about this very camera. I thought that I would try writing an opinion about the benefits of having such a camera, without going into the technical side, which I don’t really understand anyway, and see how it was received. Show me your Mega Pixels baby

Advantages: Easy to use, lots of functions, floppy disk storage and there are add-ons available
Disadvantages: Bit heavy, battery life a bit short and it is not the cheapest available

...Picking a decent digital camera is a right bugger - there are so many of them offering a range of features and naturally a range of prices. Let's face it, although they are getting cheaper such digital cameras are still a bit pricey. When I came to chose one I had valid reasons. I have a SLR Canon camera that uses good old 35mm film. Works great, but scanning the pictures is a bind. This is where the idea of a good functional digital camera came from! After much deliberation the Sony Digital Mavica (or MVC-FD90) was the choice. Why? Let's put it into perspective so you can get an idea of my personal needs. The Requirements 1) A camera that was not too complicated but offered a decent selection of functions 2) USB connection optional. Would prefer 3.5" disk storage meaning no leads and unlimited storage by swapping disks...

A DIGITAL CAMERA THAT USES FLOPPY DISKS

Disadvantages: Big and heavy, still more expensive than some other digicams.

...Many people have heard of the Sony Mavica. It has been around for a while and was a revolutionary digital camera because it allows the use of ordinary, cheap floppy disks! A new version is now available which writes onto CD-Rs, but that?s another story. FLOPPIES So why is it such an advantage that it uses floppies? Simple ? price. Normal digital cameras come with 2 ? 8MB RAM to store images on. New RAM costs loads, so if you want to take more than pictures than the amount of RAM you have, you?re screwed. But with floppies, you can carry as many as you want around with you and they?re dead cheap. Granted, you?ll only get 1.44MB on each disk, but you can take loads of them ? they?re hardly huge. A set back however is that it takes a while (Around 5 ? 8 secs) to save each image. THE CAMERA The quality of pictures is excellent...

My Constant Camera Companion

Advantages: great picture quality, convenient cdr image storage. easy to use, good battery life
Disadvantages: this is a somewhat bulky camera

...I bought my Mavica CD500 about a year and a half ago. Since then I have taken well over 2000 pictures with it. The pictures almost always turn out very well. It is espescially good for close up pictures. For example, it is a delight to take a picture of a flower at the max resolution (5mp) and then look at it in great detail on my computer screen. I am not a photo expert, but have been able to take pictures good enough to enter in art shows with this camera. I really like not having to connect by cable to my pc to upload the pics. Rather, I just take out the cdr mini disk and pop it in my notebook's cd drive. I copy some of the pics onto my hard drive, and save every pic on the cdr disks. Current cdr mini cdrs hold 210mb or about 75 full size pictures, and cost less than a dollar so they are great deals. The camera has many advanced...
