Anyone For MF2HD
Review of Maxell Floppy disk 1.44 MB by
Champ666
Advantages: I Get Them For Free
Disadvantages: Low Storage, Easily Lost
...packs as this means that you can have 14.4mb of data in your pocket. This does not sound much but when lifting text files of data off machines on a Factory floor the amount of data that can be stored on them is quite large. They also have the advantage that you can easily wipe the data once you have finished with it and use the disk again. Rewriteable CD drives are not common place on shop floors and are not likley to be.
Why do I use Maxell MF2HD's?, quite simple really the relaibility of floppy disks is quite high irrespective of who manufactures them as they are a proven technology.
At the end of the day it is down to which variety your employer stocks and most of mine have stocked these ones. You can pick up a packet for around about 2 quid, less if you buy in bulk from an office supplier.

The demise of the 1.44MB...

Rip Roaring CDRs
Review of Maxell CD-R 700 MB 16x by
waynehorrigan
Advantages: Loads of CDRs on a stick (50 of them)
Disadvantages: No cases, no protection, no inlay cards
...to put anything "non-permanent" on there, like pictures or documents, but is best for music. In fact, their product blurb only mentions music and not data. Note: if you want to keep adding and deleting data on CD format, go with the other type: the CD-RW.
It can hold 80 mins worth of music (usually around 25 three and a half minute songs). Or hundreds of pictures and literally thousands of documents. Generally anything you'd fit on the old 1.44MB floppy discs times about 600!
PERFORMANCE
Going back to their blurb the familiar old phrase "high quality recording" is evident. Maxell, along with TDK - and others - have been using this phrase since time immemorial to push blank tapes, videos and DATs. They also quote the use of this "revolutionary" recording coating but they don't go into any details on the packaging about the make up...

3M 1.44Mb Floppy Disks. Yes thats another one.
Review of 3M Floppy disk 1.44 MB by
Sexy_Young_God
Advantages: Small and compact
Disadvantages: Breakable and horrible colour
...Hiya sorry about the boredom about these floppy disks first the imation 3 1/2" floppu disks and now its those pesky 3M's.
Right i am sorry to say that my other batch of imation floppy disks have run out. So i phoned my supplier and i was informed by the lovely lady called charlie that they had run out. So she did suggest i try the new 3M pack of 10 floppies.
Right onto the product in hand:
These are the worst floppy disks i have ever purchased, the colour black is the worst ever but i must agree that floppies are the same as any other floppies.
These floppy disks are not pre-formatted so you would need to format them yourself which is really time consuming, especially if you have a really important report due in the next day for the bank as i did.
These floppies are not as good as the Imation series as all of these disks are completely...

Whats a 3 1/2" floppy?
Review of Imation Corp. Floppy disk 1.44 MB by
Sexy_Young_God
Advantages: Colourful
Disadvantages: Break too easily
...I would call these Imation 1.44Mb floppies. I recently brought these from my local Argos store in Hastings as my office equipment supplier said that i place my order too late for next day delivery.
I came across these floppy disks in my catalouge near to the PC pages and said that all of the other packs of floppy disks have the same amount of space which is currently 1.44Mb of storage but these ones have colour co-ordination to them and the others have not.
I asked the lady at the help desk and she said that the only thing about these ones is that colour coded ones are easier to identify so you wont need to bother about looking at the label ever again. OK i said i will take those please, Only to find out when i got back to the office there were 2 of each colour: Blue, Red, Yellow, Green and Lime. a 10 pack in all.
So when i got them...

The disk of the 1980's!
Review of Imation Corp. Floppy disk 1.44 MB by
pcman18
Advantages: Compact
Disadvantages: Small 1.44MB storage space
...*UPDATE TO GET MORE VIEWERS 25/10/2005*
NOTE THIS IS ABOUT ALL FLOPPY DISKS - NOT JUST THESE ONES
Floppy disks are compact
Floppy disks were good in the 1980's
However floppy disks are not very useful unless you want to transport very small files
Most, if not all floppy disks have a 'massive' 1.44MB storage space (1.37MB formatted)
The speed of writing on the disk is ridiculous - taking up to a minute or more to transfer 1.37MB of files onto the disk, and the write enable tab can easily be removed or broken, as well as the metal protection cover can also easily be broken off.
Reading from the disk is also slow taking many seconds to read any file, even a 20KB word document, and the data on the disks are likely to get corrupted.
Floppy disks are very easily damaged and become unusable, even after formatting the disk. DONT USE MOBILE...

Iomega Zip 250 USB Powered
Review of Iomega Zip 250 MB USB Powered by
zitzong
Advantages: quicker than floppys, holds several hundread MBs of data, easy to carry around
Disadvantages: will need a zip drive, not all computers will have them
...INTRODUCTION
For those of you who don't know what a Iomega Zip 250 USB Powered is, it is a portable storage device which accepts disks roughly double the thickness of a standard floppy disk. They store about 70 times the amount of data than a standard 1.44MB floppy disk does. The device is a small, lightweight and attractive looking device that can be easily placed near your computer without taking up much desk space. The good thing about the device is that it is powered from your computer's USB port and requires no additional mains plug or batteries.
DISKS TO BE USED WITH THIS DEVICE
There are various disks that can be used in the device. Only ZIP compatable ones though that can vary in size from 25MB, 100MB to 250MB. You will find that 100MB and 250MB are used now. The typical price of a 250MB disk is around £10, although as ZIP...

A dead storage medium, you could think.
Review of Verbatim Floppy disk 1.44 MB by
11071984
Advantages: You can need it several times
Disadvantages: only a few spaces
...is not very recommendable, because black is on black not so mad.
Handing

The disks are very simple to use. One pushes it into the drive assembly, presupposed one has one, and marks the data, which one wants to copy. Now there are several possibilities the data to bring on the disk. 1. you click with the right mouse button to a marked file and click on sending on and then on floppy disk drive. Then the data are overacted on the disk. 2. You mark the data and open a second window, and draw the files into the floppy disk drive. 3. You mark again the desired data and press at the same time "Strg" and "C". Then you go into the floppy disk drive and press "Strg" and "V". Then the files are copyed again on the disk. The data are overacted very fast. For 1,4 MT one needs at the most 25 seconds. There goes thus completely beautifully...

A Floppy Floppy!
Review of Sony MPF 920 by
ben-lloyd
Advantages: Reliable, relatively cheap, well-known brand, good build quality
Disadvantages: Small capacity, not as reliable as some other forms of storage, slow
...industry to increase the read/write speed of the drive.
Similarly, this drive only accepts 1.44 MB floppy diskettes which in todays terms is a tiny amount of information. Considering many digital cameras take photographs of 2.5MB+ in size, you are not going to able to fit many (if any) onto a diskette.
~~~ Observations ~~~
In the course of my job, I have found the Sony MPF920 to be an extremely resilient piece of hardware. Working in a school I am very used to finding all manner of objects inserted into the floppy disk drives, but I have found that the Sony drives seem to withstand this treatment far more readily than any of their rivals.
Added to this is the relative ease with which the drive casing can be removed so that inserted objects can be retrieved, this drive really is worth investigating for use in enviroments where you may...
Zip it up
Review of Member Advice on General Computing Issues by
burraway2k
Advantages: back up all your work and password protect it
Disadvantages: ???????????????????????
...Zip disks are excelent. for example if your computer went completly wrong and you couldn't get back into your hard drive and you ended up reformating, you would loose all your files, programmes etc. all your work all that hard work! with zip disks you can back up all your work or just save it to there in the first place. maybe you have private stuff you do't want the rest of your familly to see you can password protect your disk. zip disks are basicaly floppy disks but much better. zip disks will hold 100-250 mb but a normal floppy will do 1.5 mb...
Belkin 64MB Memory Stick
Review of Belkin USB 2.0 Flash Drive USB flash drive - 64 MB by
emma155
Advantages: Reliable, Good value for money!
Disadvantages: Can lose easily
...After months of using a set of 1.44mb floppy disks, to transfer data from from pc, to school, and back again, I descided that this just wasn't very efficient. I lost a lot of work from a floppy disk suddenly deciding to stop working.
I decided to buy a usb flash drive or memory stick, when I borrowed my teachers', to transfer a large file home. This was when I decided to buy one of these myself, and get rid of my floppy disks.
These USB sticks are very useful, they can store a lot of data(64mb) and they are fairly reliable, I have had no problems in the 2 months, that I have been using it.
The USB drives are very simple to use! Just plug them into the USB port at the front, or the back of your computer, or laptop and the computer will detect it straight away, no installation required(windows 2000+). To remove the memory stick from...
