Review of Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 200GB
Advantages: Very capacious, Good qaulity, Good value for money
Disadvantages: Not supported properly by most operating systems
...I wanted to buy a Hard Drive that I could trust all my files with. I have had an External Maxtor Hard Drive for a while and I can admit it's taken some abuse, but it still works fine! So I decided to go for Maxtor's 200Gb drive, the DiamondMax Plus 9.
I baught the OEM version, it was extremely good value for money, I got it for around £90! But the OEM version comes with no software and little did I realise that such a big drive needed to be specially activated first.
I must have spent half an hour tinkering with it un til I took a trip to Maxtor's website and found some software that would set it up for me. And the software worked a treat, except for 1 snag. My ATA drivers couldn't support 200GB and the drive had to be formated to 130GB instead, thats 70GB of valuable space down the pan!! And I am using Windows XP Pro which is one...

Out of the box it looks pretty much like any other Serial ATA drives, although you can tell it is a Maxtor drive (and not just because of the huge label with Maxtor written on it either). Here are the drives full specifications from Maxtor:

Maxtor is a Diamond, worth 200GB!
Advantages: very fast, stable, read and wirte speeds
Disadvantages: not very many, low end of the market
...▼ How I obtained this little beauty▼
I had already heard that Maxtor make just about every size, shape and speed of hard drive possible before considering buying a new one. I wanted something that would be cheap, around one hundred pounds; fast, most hard drives are anyway so I thought that it was best to go for this little beauty. I brought it of Dabs.com, for around £97.00, very cheap if you compare this to similar priced hard drives with less capacity than this one. One thing though, if you are looking for cheap, high capacity drives, you need to look at the highest capacity first and compare it the next highest at the highest price, so you end up getting a better deal, and more space.
▼Why did I want it? ▼
Well, I wanted something that was fast, very large and most of all, better than my original...

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 160GB SATA Hard Drive
Advantages: Fast and Silent, Easy SATA installation, Two flavours to choose from
Disadvantages: Dismal performance
...Maxtor are one of the 3 leading hard drive manufacturers in the personal and business computing market at the moment along with Western Digital and Hitachi. They are also the cheapest. Unfortunately, the saying that price doesn't equals quality is true here. Too true.
The 160GB version of the DiamondMax Plus9 can be purchased online from around £51.00 onwards. And with the way hard drive prices have fallen recently, that's not bad at all. But as I said, you're getting cheap quality to match the cheap price.
The drive itself looks very similar to any other hard drive, and comes in both IDE ATA/133 and SATA 150 flavours, with the SATA ones easier to configure due to their jumperless installations.
My personal experience with this drive has been short. I first purchased this drive to use in my first ever custom-built computer...

Cheaper than DVD media, and far more useful
Advantages: Cheap and versatile disks
Disadvantages: Distinctly mediocre performance by latest standards.
...MAXTOR was formed in 1982 and currently enjoys an annual sales turnover in excess of four billion dollars. Clearly they?re doing something right!
Whilst I?ve recently read some rather uncomplimentary comments about MAXSTOR disks which suggest their previously legendary reputation for manufacturing reliable hard disks has taken something of a back seat, I?m pleased to say I?ve not witnessed any such problems.
Shortly before I acquired my latest PC ? I sought to upgrade one of my ?back office storage servers? with an extra disk, specifically the 120Gb DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA/133 model.
It cost me around fifty quid at my local PC shop, and at a price of 41p a gig, that is a price comparable to DVD-R media! ? with the obvious advantage of being considerably faster, and read-writable to boot!
The unit comprises of a ?bog standard...

DiamondMax? I'm afraid not.
Advantages: Very Cheap, Very Quiet
Disadvantages: Poorly Made, Burn Out Easily
...In my first foray into PC building 5 years ago, I spent a great deal of time researching components and learning to build a system competently and properly. I decided upon a Maxtor Hard Drive, which was a 40Gb DiamondMax model, mainly for it's price (around £20 cheaper than similar models by Samsung, Hitatchi, Seagate, etc). This was a poor decision.
Not 4 months after purchase the hard drive failed. A burn out on the IDE controller board on the underside of the disk, blew up the electronics. I was frustrated, but considered myself unlucky at the loss of much of my data. Undeterred, I sent the hard disk back to my retailer and received a new one on warranty. Installed and ready to go, I was happy I'd managed to sort it all out. However, 2 months later the hard-drive failed, this time the motor had burnt out. Right.
I pressed my...

Silent ninja
Advantages: Fast, quiet, great RAID 0 performance
Disadvantages: 1 year warranty
...I received two of these (60Gb) as replacements for my previous disk (DiamondMax D740X 60Gb, which I also review here on Ciao) which were faulty.
I didn't really get off to a good start, as one as of the disks was dead on arrival. It failed to be recognised by the BIOS on any of my machines, and the only controller which so much as acknowledged the drive's presence was my HighPoint 374. It appeared as a 'Maxtor CALYPSO' (the drive's codename), and the controller failed to boot. This indicated an electronics problem and duly, I returned it.
On receiving my replacement drive, I striped it together as RAID 0 with the other one and crossed my fingers. From here on out it was nothing but good news! The drives are both exceptionally quiet - Maxtor has replaced the old ball-bearing motors with FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearing) ones, which are...

Maxtor does it again... Bravo!
Advantages: Very fast, reliable and quiet... and Cheap!
Disadvantages: Absolutely nothing!
...Maxtor have been there since the beginning of the home PC - They were making 100MB hard disks 12 years ago that are just as good as their 400GB+ disks today.
I have always liked the combination of price and reliability Maxtor drives have offered. You can pick up a Maxtor disk for £10-£15 cheaper on average than you can other manufacturers. My first Maxtor disk was a monstrously big 10GB disk back in 1999, and since then I have truly been hooked.
Never once has a Maxtor disk failed on me, or had any indication of doing so. SMART status on all of my drives has always been 100%, and that 10GB disk is still happily sat in a USB enclosure on top of my PC.
Anyway, with the 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9 I have been using as my Primary disk for over 3 years getting a bit on the full side, I decided it was time for an upgrade. I wanted...

Diamond Max HTPC Drive!
Advantages: Quiet, Swift, Great warranty and Online Support.
Disadvantages: Not much of a Manual but details can be found online!
...I have now been using this drive for over one month after waiting to gather all the components for my HTPC (Home Theatre PC). What do I think of this drive?
I think that it is the best drive I have owned yet! Not only is the storage capacity great on this drive but it is lightning fast (compared to my old Diamond Max IDE Drive) and is also very quiet. The bios recognised the device instantly and with SATA cables being used instead of IDE, this gave my Silverstone case some extra space for air to help cool my system down.
I have Windows Media Center 2005 loaded onto this drive and saw a few recommendations for this drive when using a HTPC. My system is linked to Sky Digital through a Hauppauge PVR card which is able to record straight onto hard disk without the need for a Sky+ Box.
I fournd that the drive is able to record...
