Oodles of space
Review of Maxtor Ultra Hard Drive Kit 250 GB by flaggster

Advantages: Space!
Disadvantages: Runs quite hot

...This IDE hard drive replaced 3 aging hard drives on my wifes PC (the result fo a power surge!) The drive shipped with all you need to get it installed (apart from a screwdriver!), and was phsically installed in no time. Then I hit a snag - the fresh insatll windows XP only saw the drive as a 128gb drive. A quick trip to the Maxtor website, and a search for xp and wrong size yielded the solution (in my case, it was to upgrade to service pack 1). However, it would be well worth potential purchasers ensuring that their motherboard chipset/disk controller and operating system support drives this large before purchasing. I have since used the drive heavily for video editing, and find it an absolute pleasure in use. Capturing video at DVD resolutions, it copes with the data transfer beautifully. I have noticed that the drive does run very... Read review

Maxtor 500GB EXTERNAL
Review of Maxtor Basics Desktop 500 GB by Tribunal18

Advantages: Maximizes the amount of data vs the cost of the product
Disadvantages: heat issues, cord connectivity, and small installation problems.

...Some people call me ignorant for using Maxtor, but I honestly only order Maxtor for my hard drives. Now the only downside to the Maxtor 500 GB is that it is an external drive that, if not careful, can overheat and cause connectivity problems, transfer speed issues, or just annoyance from when the usb gets knocked out. That being said, if you can get past the downside of have an external I would recommend this product to anyone not using a Mac. The only reason I do not recommend this to Mac owners is because Mac is the only type of computer that I myself will not touch. I have filled this thing up to about half it potential and when I do manage to full it up, I will write agian to let you know the outcome.... Read review

Very Easy to Use
Review of Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 320 GB by streetsmart

Advantages: Easy, affordable
Disadvantages: None

...When I purchased this I was so much excited as now I can store all my photos, movies and data at one place. Its really very easy to use. You have to do nothing just connect it with USB port and thats it. Its not too heavy. Sometimes I take this with me and share my photos with friends. So I never need portable with it. I have stored all the cartoons for my kids in this and this way my DVD's arein good state now. As for my kid pause and start the movies so many times and my DVD's will get corrupted with this, but now I have no fear. He can do pause and play so many times. It has a stand with it so it will stand firmly and not a chance of falled and broken. As Maxtor is using USB port the data transfer speed is quite good. Its just like when we are copying and pasting data from one folder to another, its really like that easy. I have... Read review

Maxtor for Macs.
Review of Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB by PhaedraUK

Advantages: Fast, quiet, Plug and Play
Disadvantages: Supplied 'back-up' software could be better.

...on the desktop. At this point the drive can be reformatted using Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility). Its worth mentioning that the drive can be used PC formatted under OSX (although it won't give maximum performance), but if you wish to share it with a PC, this might be useful. BACKING UP For very simple storage, copy files and folders to the Maxtor and nothing else is required. If your needs are more demanding, back-up software is supplied, or if you search the Downloads section at the Apple site, simpler alternatives are available - some Freeware. Personally, I found the supplied back-up software unnecessarily complicated and don't use it, but it's worth trying before exploring another route, if for no other reason than you've paid for it and your opinion may differ. There is also the Maxtor's One Touch method, where a button can... Read review

And they all came tubbling down
Review of Maxtor DiamondMax 60 61.5 GB by weebgenerations

Advantages: fast
Disadvantages: very unreliable - terminal illness - genetic

...Maxtor - one of the most popular makes of mid range hard drives, available from most stores including PC World. What they fail to tell you is that Maxtor hard drives, although fast are very unreliable. In fact, Maxtor hard disk drives have an inherant head problem - no we're not talking spots - they have a tendancy to crash - locking the head to the "motor" thus disabling the drive. It will cease to be regonised by your computer and even the much rated Norton Disk Doctor will not be able to rescue it. The only option - start again or fork out £300 to ge tthe date retreived. OUCH! Better go with a seagate, Western Digital or Quantum next time!... Read review

A fast reliable drive.
Review of Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80 GB by J.Gamgee

Advantages: Price, Speed, Reliability
Disadvantages: Noise

...I have been using this drive for some months now having bought it to augment my then system. I have used Maxtor drives almost exclusively in the past and have found them to be both reliable and fast drives, I have not yet needed to return one, unlike with other brands. Maxtor offer a good range of drives now including SATA and PATA drives (such as this one) with 2mb and 8mb cache sizes. I opted for the lower as I had no need for the slight improvement in speed as this drive was only ever intended as a media storage drive. The pricing of these drives and indeed the entire Maxtor range is competitive. Though not the cheapest drives available I believe that the small difference increase in price over the cheap drives is worth it for the potential gains in reliability and speed. Maxtor only have Western Digital to match them... Read review

Maxtor, better then the rest
Review of Maxtor DiamondMax 60 61.5 GB by Kinny

Advantages: Fast, quiet and very good.
Disadvantages: None

...I used to use Seagate hard drives but the first one i had corrupted itself and i couldn't access anything, then i thought it must've have been a one off occurrance so i wentto buy another one, but after about a year it burnt itself out. I wasn't very pleased to find out about and since then i gave up on Seagate. I looked around for an ew hard drive and i came across Maxtor, a well known make along with Seagate and Western Digital. I wnet out to buy a 10Gb hard drive and when i first got it i installed and everything was fine. Afte about 18 months it was still going strong with no bad sectors. I didn't like uninstalling things and i found the hard drive soon filled up quickly, so i went to buy another Maxtor hard drive. This time i brought a 25Gb and it's very good. This particular hard drive belongs to the Diamond Max 60 family... Read review

Maxtor!!
Review of Maxtor DiamondMax 10 320 GB by Tencents

Advantages: Fast, Reliable, Quiet
Disadvantages: Heat (but all drives do)

...I have just bought two of these great drives. Having over 20 years of experience with PCs at all levels. I can say that Seagate once ruled the hill, but that was then. For the past 5 years I have been using and today I insist on, Maxtor drives. I own (and still use) 9 drives in my machine (30gigs short of 2 terra's) - they are Maxtor: 40, 80, 160 (ide), 300, 300, 320, 320 (sata). I also have two Western Dig's 200 and 250 (ide) - they're ok I guess... I love my Maxtor drives though (touch wood) I have never had a problem... ever... okay there was one time I drank too much at a LAN party and formatted the wrong drive, and then there were a lot of times I had a problems with the best virus (or handcuff) in the world (i.e. Windows). Advice: I'm a pathetic romantic when it comes to keeping my drives cool (way below 40deg.C) and I think... Read review

Maxtor does it again... Bravo!
Review of Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250 GB by mattyprice4004

Advantages: Very fast, reliable and quiet... and Cheap!
Disadvantages: Absolutely nothing!

...Maxtor have been there since the beginning of the home PC - They were making 100MB hard disks 12 years ago that are just as good as their 400GB+ disks today. I have always liked the combination of price and reliability Maxtor drives have offered. You can pick up a Maxtor disk for £10-£15 cheaper on average than you can other manufacturers. My first Maxtor disk was a monstrously big 10GB disk back in 1999, and since then I have truly been hooked. Never once has a Maxtor disk failed on me, or had any indication of doing so. SMART status on all of my drives has always been 100%, and that 10GB disk is still happily sat in a USB enclosure on top of my PC. Anyway, with the 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9 I have been using as my Primary disk for over 3 years getting a bit on the full side, I decided it was time for an upgrade. I wanted a disk... Read review

Maxtor the ideal storage system, simple to use.
Review of Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 320 GB by dvdsprks2

Advantages: Could hold up to 300 GB of storage
Disadvantages: The only one is standing it somewhere, not maxtors fault

...I bought this storage device as a backup for my computer files, as I work from home my computer is used by the rest of the family for personal and internet usage. So I was worried that my work which pays some of the wages towards the house could get corrupted by mutiple users of the same machine. I found that I needed to keep my work files backed up, but quickly, simply and efficiently. I have an 250 GB hard drive so in theory I can back up the whole of the drive onto my maxtors' drive it has a 300 GB capacity. The rest of the Technical information which is only on the packaging as it does not have an instruction booklet it is that simple to use is as follows:. The Maxtor has 16 MB Cache/7200 RPM It can also store 230,000 JPEG photos or 21 hrs of DV video or 5000 hrs of MP3 music obviously with the Maxtor can take combinations... Read review
