mathematically marvellous
Review of Longman A-Level Study Guide: Mathematics - Michael Kenwwod, Cyril Moss by hermione_granger123

Advantages: Quick and easy to use for all areas of A-Level Maths
Disadvantages: Lacks depth in some areas of the course

...of the book. I have been using this book in conjunction with past papers, and only referring to it when I come to questions I realise I need to brush up my knowledge on that particular area. This study guide has revision sections for all areas at A-Level standard, even incorporating areas from the Further Maths syllabus, including Pure, Mechanics and Statistics. The only down side is that some topics don’t go into enough depth, but you should remember how condensed this book has to be, and any lacking areas can be looked up in text books used in lessons.... Biggest decision of your life.... so far
Review of Member Advice on Choosing a course by Sarah_Louise

Advantages: Get you into Uni
Disadvantages: Difficult

...I thought I'd come back to update this opinion a bit now I've nearly finished my A-levels (yes, there is no need to remind me that I should be revising!) Hopefully this will be useful for all you GCSE students out there. Choosing your A-levels is a generally a critical decision in your life - it is one that actually, for the first time really, will affect your future. (Remember they said that for your GCSE subject choices? lets be honest - are they *really* going to affect your career?) (I'm assuming there that you didnt do GCSE technology - so you cant do A-level technology - but you want to become a technology teacher!) Generally the choice at AS and A-level is extremely wide and varied - much more than at GCSE. This is especially true if you decide to do your A-levels at college. So firstly I'll cover the great debate of... Read review

You could spy with this little eye
Review of Logitech Quickcam VC by S_Osborne

Advantages: very small. has its own built in clamp
Disadvantages: none that i can think of

...The logitech quickcam is a very usefull little piece of hardware to have. It is small cmpact and comes with all the little features that anybody could possibly want. I recently had to do my a-level course work in which I had to measure the energy losses in a bounicing ball. I used the quick cam to record the bounces so I could see where the highest point of the bounce was (you need this to work out the energy loss) anyway end of physics lesson. The quickcam comes with own built in clamping mechanism which enables you to clip it to the side of your lap top if you have to. The length of cable is nice as it is not too long that it gets in the way of everything, but it is long enough to reach probably where you need it to. The software that comes with the quickcam is very easy to use and is not hard to load on to your computer because... Read review

It's up to you
Review of Chemical Engineering by Boris

Advantages: Highly renowned, Very good lecturers, Interesting material
Disadvantages: If you aren't interested you will fail or underachieve, Early mornings

...these they worked out what had or had not been covered at A-level and made a course up to fit that. Ties together various aspects of A-Level with some new Concepts. Fluid Mechanics 2 Lectures a week, Tutorial every 2nd week for the first term and beginning of the third. This is a basic Chem Eng class revolving around how fluids (mainly liquids) behave under various situations. Quite Hard Heat and Mass Transfer Basically explains in detail formula for calculating convection and conduction of heat (Radiation in the 2nd year). Mass Transfer is a few lectures at the end relating similar mathematical equations to mass rather than heat. Thermodynamic 2-3 Lectures a week, Tutorial every 2nd week Explains how energy is transferred as work and heat and relates it to various machines to help understanding of the applications. Builds on A-Level Chemistry... Read review

A calculator for all ages
Review of Casio FX83WA CLS by dd4ag

Advantages: Does everything and more than what you could want
Disadvantages: None

...The first calculator I every purchased was for my GCSE’s and it was a few models up from this one, boosting features such as being battery and solar powered. On moving to A-levels I thought it would be worth the investment in buying a colour graphic calculator, again by Casio (model CFX 9850). I was told it would be suitable at university, and the fact it could solve equations and draw graphs had the bonus of saving time while solving mathematical problems. When I arrived at university to do Mechanical Engineering I thought it would be the perfect tool. To my disappointment and waste of timing learning how to use and master even things such as finding the off button. University regulations said one of the only two calculators suitable to use was the Casio fx-83WA. Like any one who wanted to comply I purchased my, not as exciting... Read review

That's a book and a half...
Review of Economics - John Sloman by segyeshin

Advantages: Good explanations.
Disadvantages: Doesn't strictly follow the AS/A2 syllabus.

...If you are studying economics, for one reason or another, this is a very useful book. The book is geared towards those who are starting their journey into the great mystery that is economics. It starts off with the basics of what economics is, and gets on to the more complicated stuff from there. It's not overly daunting for the beginners, and that's a great feat for a 800-odd page book to achieve. The book explains economic concepts and theories very well, with colourful graphs and case studies to aid understanding. The book also includes some questions and summaries of chapters. The book covers a lot of topics. As far as I can tell, it covers most if not all of A-level economics, which is two years of study. But I have to point out that the book does not advertise itself as an A-level textbook. It does in fact deviate and/or go... Read review

Good Base Textbook
Review of Psychology: The Science of Mind and Behaviour - Paul Humphreys, Richard Gross by soulmateskv

Advantages: Covers a wie range of concepts
Disadvantages: Lacks finer details

...A perfect introduction to psychology, ideal for any A-level psychology course. Very broad coverage and written in a simple style. However, this applies strictly to A-level courses ONLY. For psychology undergraduates this book doesn't cover approaches in nearly enough depth that is required. A fantastic base gudie at A-level, not so fantastic for a degree. The book on some occasions is not clearly structured, so the reader may be require to refer back or forth between the other chapters to clarify a theory or concept further as it lacks the finer details. The language of the text is of a mediocar level which is perfect for 'A' level students. Overall, it is a good textbook for 'A' level students, highly recommended but with other supplementary books to assist the students.... Read review

A real gem
Review of A-Level Physics - Roger Muncaster by sasr007

Advantages: Exam Q's
Disadvantages: A bit on the thin side

...If you've just crossed over from GCSE's to A-level and you can't find any "Revise-in-a-week" books that were so popular for GCSE. That's probably because there aren't any because the publishers think were all hard working. Hmmm, how wrong could they be. Being pretty time deficient myself, I need revision that is short and concise and also conveys the subject sensibly (like the "revise-in-a-week"). This book is the A-levels answer to the popular series. Every topic is crammed in here with room for examiners tips and past paper questions. Neatly designed and also can be used as an easy reference guide. Well worth the money.... Read review

My A-Z of education!
Review of Member Advice on Education by thedevilinme

Advantages: Honest list
Disadvantages: Honest list

...towards fees they are often a better proposition than some English students, meaning universities send out teams to Eastern Europe to go and get them. For years now the foreign student has always been allowed some leeway on course work and exams because of their poor English skills, the supreme irony being that leeway is most prevalent on English degrees being taken by affluent South East Asian and African students. The new EU students can go one better now and never pay off their student loans all you guys have had to because there's no real proven mechanism to collect from overseas students that's proved cost effective when they go home. They are not asked to cough up at the airport. G is for GCSE 57% of our kids get A-C passes, most of those going on to get that 97% rate in A-Levels. But 43% don't get good grades and 10% get no grades... Read review

MEng Aeronautical Engineering @ Imperial College
Review of Aeronautical Engineering by samwolf

Advantages: Good numerate degree from excellent establishment
Disadvantages: Hard work, poorly organised department at times.

...on engineering experience - one project each year, and last year's project was so badly organised by the department that at times it was just a chore. If the sort of course you're looking for involves getting to play with tools and bash bits of metal, then go down the Mechanical Engineering route! The lecture course is heavy; certainly in my experience so far I've had a great deal more lectures than some of my friends on other courses - its definitely not a 7 hour week or anything like that! Lecturer quality is varied, and there's often an accent barrier, but generally notes are good. Tutorials to support lectures are often not great, though there are some first class tutors - its really luck of the draw. These tend to be fortnightly, and tutorial work goes unmarked. The social scene in Aero, due to the high workload and low numbers isn't great (and... Read review
