Great Central Hostel to see Melbourne
Advantages: Friendly Hostel, clean and cheap
Disadvantages: Can get noisy
...The Melbourne International Backpackers
The Melbourne International Backpackers is in a great location for the CBD. Located on Elizabeth and Franklin Street, the nearest station is Melbourne Central just 5 mins away and Flinders Street station is only (15 mins away).
Rooms:
Hostel dorm rooms are available from 4 ? 10 bed, these are all priced the same, the winter prices are $24 a night or $143 for a week. You will need to give a refundable $20 deposit for your key card.
All rooms are bunk bed style with free linen and blankets, all rooms have a full length mirror and lockers.
Social Areas:
This hostel has a large kitchen which was part of the appeal for me, clean and tidy with enough pots and pans for everyone. You can get a cutlery box from reception; you just have to make a $20 deposit which you will receive back...

Marvellous Melbourne
Advantages: The Most Liveable City in the World
Disadvantages: A long way away from practically everywhere else!
...I suppose I should probably begin by declaring my unquestionable bias on this subject? Melbourne is my home town, and although I've lived in a lot of other places around the world, I've probably spent the majority of my life there. It often strikes me that whilst Australia is obviously a very popular destination for tourists generally, Melbourne is frequently overlooked in favour of Sydney; its bigger, brasher, older sister up north. This seems a great pity because Melbourne is in many respects a much more lively and appealing city to visit.
WHY VISIT MELBOURNE? Why? Well, because it's a city like no other. For starters, it has a fabulous climate with four genuine seasons, which is a rarity in Australia. Melbourne tends to be hot and sunny all through the summer, pleasantly bright and warm in the spring, romantically autumnal in...

Melbourne's Crown and Glory
Advantages: Lots to do
Disadvantages: Hard to see it all
...I?ve complained before to all the good people on Ciao about not being much of a fan of Melbourne. It?s just one of those cities that doesn?t grab me. There is a local tension between Sydney people and Melbourne people, each side saying their city is the best and it?s true that Melbourne was once voted the most liveable city in the world. Although it?s got many things going for it, it?s just not for me.
It was with some reluctance then that I spent a few days there last week for work. On Thursday night I had a colleague with me so when we?d finished the daily drudge of meetings we thought we?d have a night on the town.
Crown Casino is the jewel in Melbourne?s crown (excuse the pun) of night life. Standing resplendent on the south bank of the Yarra River in the heart of the city, the casino, built in 1996 is a must see. The 39...

A tour of Melbourne ... by food
Advantages: Slower pace ... most livable city
Disadvantages: At the other end of the world
...I visited Melbourne over the Christmas break and what a break it was! Instead of doing a usual what a wonderful city this is, I thought I will give a tour of Melbourne based on food. Getting hungry already? Well, here we go!
Lets start at the airport. Upon arrival, the immigration officers were very efficient and before long, we were through and collecting our bags. Just a word of warning; because Australia is an island, they are very strict about bring flora and fauna products into their country. So, if you have food items, plants or even animal skin, do declare it. Upon exiting the arrival hall, you have 3 choices. One, someone is there to meet you, whereupon transportation is already taken care of. Two, you are in Melbourne by yourself and have already decided where you are staying (in the city), and so the airport shuttle (Airbus...

More Melbourne Please
Advantages: Lovely city
Disadvantages: A little hard on the wallet
...Lovely. Absolutely 100 percentey lovely.
The first thing you notice when you arrive in Melbourne is when you're flying over it in a plane all the streets are like in New York - all criss-cross, so it's easy to find your way around.
So after collecting your bags, you jump in to a taxi and go to your hotel. May I reccommend you stay at the Rockman's Regency - it's 'One of the best Hotels in the World.' The food is fantastic, but you can also rent a flat for a week in the building on a self-cooking basis. I must point out that the flats are very nice, and that supermarkets are available near to the apartments.
People are very welcoming and charming, and you'll find a lot to do. Perhaps you want to go and see the set of Neighbours, a street which does exist and is lived in. Or maybe a boat trip takes your fancy. Or maybe, you want...

Melbourne - what a place
Advantages: lots to see, very friendly, beautiful buildings
Disadvantages: beggars, can be expensive for some accomodation.
...If you are planning a trip to Australia then Melbourne is an absolute must to add to your itinerary. It is such a beautiful city and contains everything you could possibly want. As part of a working holiday, I spent 3 months living in Melbourne and these are the main attractions as well as some helpful hints. Anything goes in Melbourne, so be prepared, you will see some very unusual sights!! You may also spot the odd famous person...I saw Kimberley Davies (Annalise from neighbours) walking down Brunswick Street. I have read the other reviews on Melbourne and they cover the most famous attractions so I wanted to add a few more that most people may not know about.
Crown Casino: A great night out even if just to watch. I went 3 times while I was in Melbourne and loved it every visit – even though I didn’t always win...

Melbourne , My Favourite City
Advantages: easy to get around plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: not enough time
...I love Australia and one of the nices Cities is Melbourne. I fell in love with it on my first visit 30 years ago then in the last year I went over to Melbourne again on a visit and I still got the same type of Buzz which I got all those years earlier.
Melbourne is a major centre of Commerce, Indusrt and Cultural Activity. There are a great variety of buildings Victorian as well as Modern.
The climate is very similar to ours in the South East of England. You often can experience 4 Seasons in one day.
It is very easy to get around particularly if you are a Tourist. They have a City Tourist Shuttle which takes you around the Top Attractions which you would like to see if you were a visitor. There are 15 stops so you can get on and off them when ever you wanted to. The other plus factor is it will not cost you anything as it is...

Elizabeth Hostel, Melbourne...weirdos aplenty.
Advantages: Location, price
Disadvantages: Weirdos
...Elizabeth Hostel, 490 Elizabeth Street
*The Good*
- location. Walking distance of the CBD. About 3 mins walk to Melbourne Central. Lots of Asian restaurants around. About 1 min walk to Victoria Market. Tram stop pretty much on the doorstep.
- the staff are mostly Chinese, so this would be a definite pluspoint for Chinese-speakers.
- quieter than most hostels at night.
- cheap, and weekly rates available.
- friendly staff
- the reception is in a convenience store
- female dorms available
*The Bad*
- dark and dingy
- can be too quiet at times, like a no-mans land
- some of the people who stay there are very strange. Many Aussie hostels will only allow non-Aussies to stay. This hostel is an exception, which means it is a haven for some dodgy people who have nowhere else to go. Rumours of a murder in one...

Old Melbourne Gaol
Advantages: Good way to pass an afternoon or morning out of the Melbourne sun.
Disadvantages: Not really much to see, but still worth it
...on the actual scaffold used in Kelly's execution (thankfully now made safe), and to see a replica of Kelly's armour (apparently the original is housed in Melbourne Library)
After, or before entering the Gaol there is a chance to stock up on souveniers of your trip, ranging from tea towels and badges to postcards and books about Australia's most famous outlaw....

It all kicks off in Melbourne
Advantages: Great racing
Disadvantages: in the middle of the nihgt
...Melbourne in March means one thing.
The Formula One Circus is back on the road and its first stop is Australia.
How amny of you will be dragging yourselves out of bed in the early hours of Sunday morning to watch the race? I will be.
Adelaide was originally the last date on the calendar but Since moving to its new home after the end of 1995, the Australian Granp Prix has become the First prestige fixture of the year.
A lot of scandal and load of trouble were the first ingredients of the new circuit.
It cuts through a lot of woodland and park space in Melbourne and local residents put in many complaints. It appears they love it now.
Most of the year the dircuit is normal everyday roads until Late Feb when they turn it into the home of F1.
I remember the first year of action. There was an almighty crash on the first lap...
