...Many years ago on a holiday to the Isle of Skye I discovered I had forgotten to pack my walking boots! A trip to the Island outdoor shop was necessary and after trying on several different makes I finally opted for a pair of Merrell walking shoes. Fast forward almost a decade and I can honestly say these were the best pair of shoes I have ever bought. Sadly after walking many miles my shoes had started to show their age! A few months ago I decided it was time to buy a new pair. Having had such a positive experience with Merrell I knew I wanted to stick with the brand. A trip to my local Milletts revealed a few styles in the Merrell range. I have fairly skinny ankles and so find that high walking boots tend to rub my ankle bone. Merrell Siren Shoe

these shoes are made for walking

Advantages: long lasting, ideal changing weather
Disadvantages: you get so used to wearing them you don't like going out in your heels!

...These are the third pair of Salomon shoes I?ve owned and I don?t think I will ever buy a different brand of walking shoe again. I live in a hilly area and don?t have a car and therefore do a lot of walking, not only are they incredibly comfortable but they keep my feet dry in the wettest of weather but at the same time circulate air and therefore I?ve never had the ?smelly trainer? problem. Basically they are warm and dry in winter and cool in the summer. As well as the everyday use mentioned above I?ve also wear them for more challenging walking, for example coastal path walks. My last pair lasted over three years with consistent use but not until the very end did they show any sign of their age. I also, and I know this is a very personal preference, find them much more attractive than a normal trainer....

...I first read Ballet Shoes when I was eight. It was the first of Noel Streatfield's books I'd read, and it remains my favourite. I put it away during my teenage years and forgot about it until Christmas 2007 when I watched the BBC adaptation with Emma Watson. I went to Indonesia and got the film on knock-off DVD, and immediately after watching I rang home to get my parents to order me a copy. It was a great welcome home. walking shoes or ballet shoes?

Advantages: low on the tendon so comfy at the back of the foot
Disadvantages: midsole just not stiff enough for people of 13 stone

...I bought Scafell because I needed some lightweight waterproof walking boots and was bored with getting my feet soaked in soggy trainers. These might be waterproof, they certainly worked in some light rain for an hour but the soles just don't have the stiffness for anyone my weight 13.5st / 89Kg I feel every pebble, and its not nice. I normally walk on the North downs across fields and the paths are not that rough but I feel like my feet are being prodded and squished by every tiny item I stand on. To compare, my running trainers are much better at soaking up the bumps. Also the padding seems very thin around the toes making downhill walking prone to rubbing. If you are looking for lightweight shoes on very easy terrain and are say, half my weight you might consider them....
