Revoulationary Road

Advantages: Good acting
Disadvantages: NA

...This is based on the 1961 novel of the same name by Richard Yates. Set in 1955, Frank (Leonardo DiCaprio) and April Wheeler (Kate Winslet) move to Revolutionary Road in one of New York City's wealthy suburbs, and have a daughter and a son. Everything seemed to be in place for a perfect family. However, after 7 years of being together, April is not satisfied with her life as a housewife, and Frank despises his job at Knox Business Machines, where his father worked for twenty years in a similar position. The Wheelers feel they are trapped in the way of life of the suburb and the normal "happy family scene". On Frank's thirtieth birthday he seduces a young secretary from work and begin to have an affair with her.. Returning home late, April surprises him with a birthday cake and a proposal that they move to Paris, with April...

~ Waterloo Road- Overview ~

Advantages: Excellent stories, Great acting, good soundtrack
Disadvantages: none

...~ WATERLOO ROAD ~ * What is Waterloo Road? Waterloo Road is a BBC television programme based around a difficult school in Manchester. The school consists of pupils with troubled pasts and disabilities. The series evolves around the staff, pupils and parents and brings up many issues involving bad behaved children, suicidal pupils, teachers having affairs and parents being violent and abusive. In every episode there is a different plot focusing on one or two actors more than the others but it generally focuses on all the main characters included. Each episode is played for an hour without any breaks and there have been four seasons shown so far with a five under way. It was first aired in 2006 showing on Thursday nights and also in Scotland on Sundays. Waterloo is produced by the same company who has produced both Footballer...

On a Rocky Road

Advantages: good customer service from asda
Disadvantages: product not as promised, bland

...I bought myself a tub of asda's 'extra special' Rocky Road Ice cream recently as a treat to myself. At £3 for a 1 litre tub, it wasn't cheap but it didn't reach the price of Ben & Jerry's which is my ultimate luxury ice cream. At that price, I felt that it would be sufficiently indulgent to act as a luxurious treat. The picture on the tub looked really inviting, showing a caramel covered ice cream. The writing on the tub promised vanilla and chocolate ice cream with chocolate covered biscuits, caramel and mallow pieces. Sounded disgustingly sickly to me, perfect! Filled with anticipation, I opened the tub, which was filled to the brim, to a swirl of chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Ok so there were no chocolate or marshmallow pieces in sight, but maybe you had to dig in to find these. Game for this, I did just that. And went...

Following in Orwell's footsteps on The Road To Wigan Pier.

Advantages: An Glimpse into Britain's Social history
Disadvantages: Not light reading!

...Review of 'The Road To Wigan Pier' by George Orwell. I am reviewing a paperback edition of the book, published by Penguin Classics; 272 pages, cover price £9.99. The book was first published in 1937 by Victor Gollancz. My copy was published in 2001. I picked up the The Road to Wigan Pier in a book exchange facility that I often use when travelling on my narrow boat. I had read Orwell's well known classics, 'Animal Farm' and 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' many years ago and seeing this book decided to re visit George Orwell's writing. The Book First off, how can I describe The Road To Wigan Pier? Well, it is not a novel, nor is it a work of non fiction in the way of a true life story. It is basically an account of the findings of George Orwell's tour of the industrial areas of Britain in the 1930s. I have to be honest...

Hit The Road

Advantages: Un-Hollywood, Tense, Twists, Acting
Disadvantages: May be far fetched for some

...and unreluctant to show some parts of their house. Soon He uncovers a secret about his neighbours past and some deeper digging can't prepare Michael for the real truth and how it will afect his life and those around him. Arlington Road has some very good twists in it's tale throughout and it also helps that the situation is believable to a degree. Some people might not buy into the fact that terrosirsts would come in the shape of a normal family on an american suburban street. But then again it's the perfect cover for such operations. Bridges character at one stage makes a good point about the people who are blamed for some terrorist acts. He makes the point that having someone to blame takes away some of the pain and anger. This made me think of the almost immediate pointing of the finger at Bin Laden after the true life events occured. I'm not...

Road Trippin'

Advantages: Humour, relatable
Disadvantages: if you don't like chick lit, dont bother

...My last review before Christmas, and my first real book review, go easy. I have just finished this fantastic book, and so I thought I'd rave about it. 'On The Road To Mr Right' is Belinda Jones' fourth novel, and is based on her real life adventures on a road trip across America, looking for lurve. Belinda Jones is 38 years old and was born in Tunbridge Wells (big up Kent!). She has worked on many magazines, from More! to Women's Weekly, and has done hundreds of freelance pieces for many other magazines like FHM, Cosmopolitan and Bliss. Her books include the Peter Andre Official Biography (we'll let that one slide), Divas Las Vegas, I Love Capri, The California Club and The Paradise Room (her latest, published in July, 2005). So, the story starts with Belinda and her best friend Emily on their way back from Las Vegas. Bored...

Road To Perfection

Advantages: Looks fantastic, acting is great, interesting story
Disadvantages: Slightly predictable towards the end

...For such a famous director, Sam Mendes has made very few films. Only two in fact; the multi-Oscar winning American Beauty and this 2002 follow-up, Road To Perdition. Although follow-up isn't really the right term, as this is completely different. I was surprised to find that this did not win any major Oscars, although it was nominated for about six, because it really is a brilliant film. I was also surprised that for such a great film, it was not advertised very well; I didn't really know anything about this film before I saw it, and I bet lots of people don't know about it at all, which is a shame. The story tells of a hit man for the Irish mafia, Mike Sullivan (played by Tom Hanks). He and his two sons have a close relationship with the godfather John Rooney (played by Paul Newman). Sullivan keeps his job a secret from his...

THE ROAD HOME - DOWN BUT NOT OUT IN LONDON TOWN

Advantages: A thought provoking book
Disadvantages: NONE

...*THE ROAD HOME* *ROSE TREMAIN* Publisher: Vintage ISBN-10: 0099478463 ISBN-13: 978-0099478461 What a fantastic read!!!!!! I must say that I have always found Rose Tremain an excellent writer, and I think that this is her best book yet, quite a change from her more normal historical novel. The Road Home is full of her usual wonderful elegant prose and imagery and is both funny and tragic. It tells the sad and yet optimistic, story of Lev, a 42 year old widower who leaves behind his young daughter, Maya, with her grandmother in Eastern Europe (just where we never do find out) and makes the journey to London in search of a job that would let him send money home to make a better life for them. Lev is a likeable and hardworking man who quickly fits in to his new surroundings, but...

The Great North Road to Nowhere

Advantages: Unintentionally hilarious
Disadvantages: Too long, too rubbish

...My mother and I disagree on many matters but there are one or two subjects on which we can find common ground. For example, we both think that BBC news correspondent, and sometime presenter of "Newsnight", Gavin Esler is a rather handsome man. I also know that we will almost always have the same opinion on books we have read. Why then would I deliberately encourage my mother to read a novel that I had found to be truly awful, a wicked misuse of trees and a scandalous waste of the time it took to read it? Quite simply I needed reassurance that "The Great North Road" was as shamefully abysmal as I thought. The book is set in 1950s Newcastle and this is the only reason I can think of for my local branch of Waterstones' having displayed it so prominently. I like the idea of supporting local authors, and the fact that the book was part...
