...Mercedes c180 '94 petrol manual, 150k on the clock (owned for 4 months) Mercs are class apart! Very good for its age. A very reliable engine! I did around 1000 miles in one trip in less than 15 hours and the engine showed no sign of fatigue. The maximum it can go is 110 miles/hour. Not very fast for a dash between signals. Its rear wheel drive, if you accelerate a bit too much on a roundabout or turn on a rainy day, you'd seem like Jeremy on Top Gear. No Air conditioner, which means you sweat like a pig in summer! around 24 miles to a gallon in city and around 30 on motorway. I can't think of any problem I had with the car apart from a routine Tracking (wheel alignment and balancing). I never had to spend a pence on repair. Overall a very good and reliable car to own. Company car

Advantages: Comfort, dashboard, engine, build quality
Disadvantages: Badly thought out reverse gear on manual gearboxes

...seats for four adults even if the method of ingres for six footers into the back is far from graceful. The back seats fold back and the boot is spacious for a car of this size. You'll get far more suitcases in the back of a mondeo though. Performance: A Kompressor is a supercharger. The 180K is no rocket, but gets to 60 in about 9 1/2 seconds with 143BHP. Fast enough to be fun to drive as there is no turbo lag, but not fast enough to get me in trouble with the law. The engine will happily cruise at 90 from here until the end of time with hardly any cabin noise. Handling: The steering is precisely weighted and the response is very good, with little body roll. A nice reliable car, but not perfect

Advantages: Comfortable, smooth automatics, Avantgarde suitable for younger drivers
Disadvantages: Fake wood models look old man, boot sticks shut, interior is substandard in places

...also get free breakdown cover that is covered by Mercedes themselves. This is transferable between owners, however the car must have a full Mercedes service history to qualify. This last for 30 years through most of Europe. Not a bad car overall, very reliable, very comfortable but not very sporty. It has an amazing turning circle but is difficult to reverse and reverse parking sensors are helpful. I would buy another....

Mercedes CLK 230 Kompressor Coupé

...Once again, a review of a discontinued model (!), but here are my thoughts on my 1999 Mercedes CLK 230 (W208) Kompressor Coupe, in Elegance trim. Bought in 2001, with one previous owner (originally registered in 1999 so its an "S" reg) and 25,000 miles, my CLK has now done 72,000 miles and is soon to be sold as the baby seat doesn't fit in the back ! Mine is the 230K (4 cylinder, 2,295cc), and turns out 197 bhp with a 0-62mph time of 9.5 seconds (the manual is a claimed 9.1 seconds, as opposed to my 5 speed automatic) on its way to a top speed of 136mph - although I clearly couldn't claim to have ever gone that fast, officer.... Also available is a 3.2 V6, a 4.3 V8, and the ultimate, the CLK55 AMG high-performance model. The "Elegance" trim means walnut wood inlays in the doors and centre console, plus a chrome strip around...

C180 Classic Estate

Advantages: Quality

...When they told me I had a C180 Classic as a company car I was a little underwhelmed. I had images of a very very basic car. When I took delivery of it I was very impressed. The things that hit me first was the feeling of build quality. It seemed to have had many years extra design time spent on it than the Espace. The road noise when driving it is minimal, when driving at the speed limit on a motor way, there is no need to raise voices to talk to the children in the back. One of the standard toys is Anti Skid control (ASR?), this is a great indicator of the road conditions, it stops you accidentaly wheel spinning on slippery roads. It can be disabled if required. C180 Would I like to buy another?

...I purchased a white C180 Elegance in Feb this year. It was an N reg 96 model. I have paid out too much for the short time I've had it though. Firstly two weeks after I had bought it I purchased a set of new alloys for it at considerable cost. I took them with the car to a local garage to fit the wheels for me. I came out £100 lighter because I had to replace the rear pads which were down the the metal!. This was the fault of the dealers who sold the car to me who said they had done a pre-delivery inspection. SO if you're thinking of buying a car from Chris Davies car sales of Chesham bear it in mind that their pre-delivery inspection is worse than useless!.Then the next thing was the remote keyfob failed. This was a major fault because Mercedes in their finite wisdom had NOT built in a manual overide for the immobiliser! I had to call...

It's a car, it's a tank, ...no it's a Merc

...Well I needed an upgrade from my previous car that apart from the fact that it was a bit girl-y it was also falling to bits. So I decided to ante up and went for the full testosterone upgrade and got a c180. It is P reg one so is almost 10 years old but it is a Mercedes and you can see it. FIRST IMPRESSIONS It is like a tank, everything inside feels humongous. The doors feel heave but close easily but slam with a healthy clank. The engine sounds sweet or should I say works quieter than a mouse stealing some cheese. DRIVING On the motorway this car feels at home. Like leviathan at prehistoric valleys. Mercedes 320 SLK

Advantages: Lots of admiring glances
Disadvantages: People don't let you out of junctions !

...I bought a 320 SLK after many trips to the local Mercedes garage and after test driving a few CLKs and the new Coupe. The SLK was the only one I got out of with a smile on my face, and it was a big one! So rather than buy one big CLK to load up with miles I bought a 1.2 Corsa for running around and an SLK for nice days. Performance is enough to get you into trouble in the wet but the traction control always kicks in before you realise you've even had a problem. The flashing light on the dash tells you you almost did! The sound from the engine is fantastic - especially with the roof down - it's like being in a computer game. Handling isn't quite what I'd expected. I'd had a couple of BMW coupes before and the SLK feels a bit bouncy compared to them - comfy rather than taught. Advantages: Very stylish, nice to own and drive.
Disadvantages: Very little luggage space with the roof down.

...We purchased our first SLK in March 1998. The first sports car we had owned. It was sitting there in the local Mercedes dealer's showroom and following a test drive we decided to buy it. At the time, this Mercedes dealership afforded a first class service and was a pleasure to deal with, but more about that in another opinion. What a brilliant piece of engineering this car was with it's folding roof, watching the whole thing disappear into the boot at the touch of a button. The bodywork was finished in silver with a black leather interior, the best combination, in my opinion. It had the standard 7 spoke polished alloys fitted and again, these 16" wheels suited the car really well. Later styles of 16" wheels fitted to the facelift SLK 230 are not so appealing in my view.
