Mercedes S320, series 300SEL W140 1993
Advantages: Very high build quality, silent running, prestige, badge, lush, solid, fast, sumptuous.
Disadvantages: Difficult to park, dealer will empty your bank balence, large car - small....... !
...Mercedes 300SEL , S320 Limo 1993.
How I acquired the vehicle?
In my course of work (Mobile vehicle mechanic) I meet a lot of people in the trade.
Because of this, I get the nod when any quality vehicles turn up in the scrapper (for what ever reason they were scrapped).... many times this is down to un-economic repair costs.
Which are for this beast, astronomical? ...well if you are prey to main dealer prices and practices, cars like this will never be owned by the 'less well offs' and I include myself in that statement. It's better to be lucky than rich sometimes.
For me, it's a case of; sod the usual car buying outlets and get your self down the scrapper. Lucky for me then!
On first inspection of this car in the breakers yard, I was shocked by its size; it was huge, damaged, covered in dust + thick mud caked the wheel...

How the other half..........................drive
Advantages: Badge, safety features, equipment, comfort, refined
Disadvantages: Cost of ownership, cost of extras
...You have just won a few million pounds in the lottery, you have bought a new house, had your luxury holiday, opened up a savings account for the grandchildren & now you have decided to spend around £60.000 on a new luxury car. Would you consider the latest Mercedes S Class saloon? It would take a brave person to spend that sum of their own money on a luxury car, would they get value for money, would it live up to expectations & would you get satisfaction from it?
My experience of the new Mercedes 320 S class came quite recently, a 60 mile drive in one & a 60 mile return trip as a passenger, if you want to find out how the ?other half? live & drive, read on.
THE MERCEDES S CLASS
Arguably the most respected luxury car in the world the S class Mercedes is the company?s flag ship model that costs between £55.595 for the ?basic...

Sumptuous Luxury, Cheaper Than You Think
Advantages: Highly respected, classy cruiser, well equipped
Disadvantages: Image is wrong unless you're old and fat
...at today?s Mercedes S- Class... And they?re right. What could only be found on an S-Class twenty years ago is bog standard on a Ford Fiesta today, and what was standard on the Merc ten years ago is either standard or an optional tick in the box on your new-car order form today.
So yes, the Rolls Royce might be the daddy of all things automotive, but the S-Class rules the road. You might see the Queen swanning around in a Roller, or Jim Davidson, or even maybe David Beckham, but you see the country?s dignitaries, the big decision makers, the euro-politicans, the company directors, all moving from A to B in a top-spec Mercedes.
But we?re talking here about a car that costs upwards of £50?000, depending on specification. The entry-level S-Costs £54?327 just to get on the road and, if you took the best-selling S320 diesel model and added...

Beautiful Mercedes
Advantages: Fuel Economy
Disadvantages: Interior
...the BMW 320d and the Audi A4 1.8 tdi cant offer!
The internal styling of the C-class is unfortunately not as exceptional as its fuel economy. The boring fake wood and neverending dark leather and plastic does not harmonise with the beautifully curved exterior body, and many friends have commented on how dissapointinly unluxurious the interior is. I do believe this is mercedes' downfall when comparing it with Audi and BMW!
The C220 cdi will set you back about £20000 on the road if you bought a new one today. However a second hand 2000 model would cost about £13000 with about 30000miles. This shows the excellent depreciation value that mercedes' have, and when your spending £20000 on a car its all important. Another aspect when considering price is the spare parts cost. Unfortunately spare mercedes parts are not cheap and the expertise...

MERCEDES C220 CDI HAS FLARE AND COMES ABOVE AVERAGE
Advantages: SMOOTH RIDE, HANDLES WELL , PRESTIGE BADGE
Disadvantages: NIGGLES CAN BE EXPENSIVE ,BUY THE FACELIFT MODEL
...about it although every other Taxi is fast becoming a Mercedes diesel.!!
The car never surprised me on speed off the mark but from 70 onward it did seem too fly with ease.Once I had started the engine from cold and woke the street up with the "clack-clack" it did please me ,as when warmed up and at normal Motorway speeds it went along qiutely without having to have the radio / cd up too loud. The finish of these vehicles is very good with soft plastics and Leather being used and the wind noise is very negligable at any speed. I did find the seats a little unsupportive and I wish I had gone for heated seats on the more cold winter mornings as the heater took an age to get up too a warm blow.
The economy with the Diesel engine and Automatic gears seemed ok on long journeys but I saw a difference of MPG when you go over 65mph in comparison...

Mercedes A160 - All things, for all men
Advantages: Interior Space, Visibility, Excellent engine & transmission
Disadvantages: Looks a bit like Camilla Parker-Bowles, head on.
...is as to be expected from a Mercedes Benz, completely smooth and effortless. This is no hot hatchback but it will sail up to 100mph without any fuss. The automatic gearbox is a very simple affair, offering four speeds with tiptronic control if you're feeling brave. Refinement is fantastic, with wind noise and good sound insulation. The only complaints are down to that ride, after a few hours of motorway driving you can begin to feel a little sea-sick. Carry plenty of wet wipes for the very young and very old.
Quality
As I mentioned above, it's going to win no awards for quality considering it's a Mercedes Benz of the 1990's. Hardly respected for their standards of quality during the latter part of the 20th century, Mercedes Benz have let a few things slip. The dash plastics are nice to look at, but give them a rub and you could...

Mercedes A140 Avantgarde
Advantages: Bargain, good all round, nippy car,
Disadvantages: none
...What a car. It has a list price of around £14000 but it is readily available at car supermarkets for just £12,000. What a bargain. For the same price as a Ford Focus you can have a MERCEDES. Not only does the A class combine style, space and value it also offers a great drive. The 1.4 litre engine is a superb unit providing around 40mpg without compromising on performance. 0-60 is knocked up in around 12 seconds and a top speed of 110mph is more than enough. This care really does feel faster and sporties than the figures suggest. The sharp brakes and suspension make driving around town a pleasure.
The level of equipment provided as standard is superb - half leather seats, electric sunroof + windows, steering adjust, remote central locking, alarm/immobiliser, driver, passenger and side airbags, traction control, heated mirrors...

Our A Class Mercedes .....
Advantages: Very Economical, Small, Nippy, Compact, Easy To Park !!
Disadvantages: Several Blind Spots Throughout The Car !!
...We have a A 160 Mercedes, its main use is driving me up and down the motorway to the oncology centre at Bristol and numerous other hospitals scattered about... so it was important when we bought the car that it was reliable, economical and easy to park. Since having our baby 'Merc' we havent had a days problem ( a hum - fingers crossed now !! ) it is just due for its first MOT ( Y reg ) . It handles very well and corners well, sticks to the road like glue when you put your foot down !! the fuel economy is excellent and this is important, it is very easy to park although there are several blind spots in the car when it comes to reverse parking - there are three headrests that line across the tops of the back seats which can make it difficult - obscures your vision somewhat when it comes to the reverse park. Our car is the shorter...

Mercedes E 220 CDI
Advantages: comfortable, economical
Disadvantages: questionable electronics, technical design
...manual gearbox and slight lack of low-end torque mean you're likely to be blown off by Golf turbodiesels at the lights. Once you get used to the roll angles it goes round corners quite well but probably doesn't compete with BMW, Audi in this respect.
In terms of "problems" (for people who don't mince their words, see the above-mentioned press) it has mostly been ok but I don't have the satnav or mobile tel. installation. The engine management system has occasionally reverted to "emergency" mode and cut off the revs at 3000 which isn't helpful when you're overtaking and when the reversing lights cut out (they're a sealed gas-filled assembly and you don't want to/ can't go there) the Mercedes importer got them back again after 2 attempts. After 67000km/42000 miles there seems to be a rattle in the driver^s door and a vehicle inspection...
