Mercedes SLK 230

Advantages: Very stylish, nice to own and drive.
Disadvantages: Very little luggage space with the roof down.

...We purchased our first SLK in March 1998. The first sports car we had owned. It was sitting there in the local Mercedes dealer's showroom and following a test drive we decided to buy it. At the time, this Mercedes dealership afforded a first class service and was a pleasure to deal with, but more about that in another opinion. What a brilliant piece of engineering this car was with it's folding roof, watching the whole thing disappear into the boot at the touch of a button. The bodywork was finished in silver with a black leather interior, the best combination, in my opinion. It had the standard 7 spoke polished alloys fitted and again, these 16" wheels suited the car really well. Later styles of 16" wheels fitted to the facelift SLK 230 are not so appealing in my view. Mercedes 320 SLK

Advantages: Lots of admiring glances
Disadvantages: People don't let you out of junctions !

...I bought a 320 SLK after many trips to the local Mercedes garage and after test driving a few CLKs and the new Coupe. The SLK was the only one I got out of with a smile on my face, and it was a big one! So rather than buy one big CLK to load up with miles I bought a 1.2 Corsa for running around and an SLK for nice days. Performance is enough to get you into trouble in the wet but the traction control always kicks in before you realise you've even had a problem. The flashing light on the dash tells you you almost did! The sound from the engine is fantastic - especially with the roof down - it's like being in a computer game. Handling isn't quite what I'd expected. I'd had a couple of BMW coupes before and the SLK feels a bit bouncy compared to them - comfy rather than taught. Mercedes SLK 230 Kompressor.

Advantages: It's a hard top, it's a convertable.
Disadvantages: Running costs.

...This is very much initial thoughts as I have only owned my Merc for 3 weeks. I did own a new shape Nissan Micra but had yearnings for something a little different. First thoughts were for a Jaguar X-Type but the more I looked at them the less they impressed. Thoughts then turned to a convertable. I can say I was so pleased with the car me and my wife flew to Germany to pick up my baby. Having had BMW convertibles for most of my working life it was a change. It wasn't cheap at 45k but worth every penny, the test is after changing my car every couple of years I don't think I could trade in my baby for anything better!! (except a newer model!) It's got everything a sports car could ever need one minute it's a roadster and at the touch of a button it's a couple. A good car......for a middle aged woman!

Disadvantages: Not exciting enough

...Too small and uncomfortable.. That more or less sums up what I think of the Mercedes SLK 350. I have always enjoyed Mercedes cars and my SLK experiences started with a 2002 SLK 320 Manual. It was bright red and my, so called, friends refered to it as a "hairdressers" car! Looks aside, it was not a bad car, the gearbox was a bit notchy and the suspension was not very sporty but on the whole I quite liked it. So when I first took delivery of my SLK 350 auto with the F1 style front end and the more powerful engine I was excited, I like to drive fairly quickly and I enjoy driving for drivings sake. The new car looked better than the old model and the interior felt more up todate. My first drive of the 350 was quite interesting. As I pulled away, with far too much throttle, the rear wheels snatched at the tarmac for grip...

update: better than sex (at times)

Advantages: fast, reliable, compact luxury convertible
Disadvantages: expensive, plastic material of dashboard, cheap antenna

...The title - I must admit - is not my brainchild, it is the header of some Austrian motor magazine describing the brandnew Mercedes convertible - the SLK 350 (R171). Since I retired recently I was looking for a "playmobile" for my golden years as there exists already a big Bavarian V8 limousine. My research on convertibles started more than a year ago and comprised vehicles such as the Porsche Boxster, the Audi TT and the Z4 from BMW. In autumn of 2003 after extensive testdrives I thought I was ready to order - the Z4 would be the one that met my requirements because it was as good as the Porsche but the price was ? 10k lower. ...This Mercedes-Benz has really surprised me. Mercedes are world-renowned for their brilliant build quality and brilliant cars. The S-class and the CL coupe are terrific cars and can the SLK continue this feat? The SLK two-seater sits slightly lower than before and certainly looks a bit meaner too. However, the car remains very small and a little toy like. Newer engines have been introduced including a wonderful 3.2-lite V6 214 BHP! The old four-cylinder 2.3-litre still remains yet the power has been increased to 194 BHP. There is also a brand new 2.0-litre which creates 161 BHP. Both new engines are very impressive, typical Mercedes. Now, there is a manual box available in the UK. The good news is that it is a six-speed gearbox. ...Recently I was very lucky to have the new Mercedes-Benz SLK 350 for the whole day as a demonstrator model. I saw the adverts for it on the TV and have been drooling after one ever since. My partner, who already has an E Class Mercedes happened to mention it to one of the account managers at the Mercedes garage - he asked about the possibility of me having one for the day to test drive. Although there is a huge demand for them at the moment - he managed to wangle me one for the day the following week, which just happened to be on my 30th birthday! What a treat! ...The answer is to buy a mercedes SLK! The new mercedes SLK is absolutely stunning to look at from the outside and this is reflected by the interior also. For the first time i believe that this new model from Merc appeals not only to the women, but also men are looking at the SLK in a different light. The exterior itself has smoother lines than its predeccesor, and this is shown in all models across the range, for example the CLK and SL. The boot especially in the old model was extremely boxy at the back to house the roof. But the new style roof takes up less space in the boot and therefore is more compact, which results in more space for shopping when the roof is down. The interior reflects the exterior, with a smooth more rounded dash board that feels solid and well put together. The cabin space feels roomier and sportier...

Style over substance

Advantages: flash coupe/convertable - you decide at a touch of a button
Disadvantages: Does not live upto the percieved Mercedes Quality

...I'm having a love hate relationship with my slk - some days I love it (Usually the sunny days, what there are of them) other days I?m not so impressed. Its not a question of reliability, more to do with Mercedes lack of thought when designing the car, I think that they probably blew the budget on designing the clever roof which they co-developed with Porsche. I have a '97 pre facelift model, I am aware that on the 2000 facelift model some of these design issues have been dealt with so it is good to see that Mercedes have acknowledged some of their design issues. However on a car that costs in the region of £30K new, the car should have been right first time. The seats are uncomfortable over a long distance and they do not grip me when going around corners so I end up sliding about on the seats unless I use my legs to brace...
