London Mercure - just what the doctor ordered!

Advantages: Very close to Tate Modern, and Southwark tube station
Disadvantages: Located on the other side of the river from the likes of Oxford Street

...I stayed at the London Mercure London City last weekend as part of a birthday treat from my boyfriend (I believe he booked it as part of a deal with rail tickets/show tickets/hotel, so am unable to tell you how much the hotel costs separately!). We stayed there for one night (a Saturday) after spending the day shopping in Oxford Street and the evening watching Phantom of the Opera at the London Palladium. We were able to check-in from 2 o'clock onwards, and we arrived at approximately 5pm. We were greeted at reception by a member of staff and a trainee, and were offered a smoking or non-smoking room. We opted for a non-smoking room and were given room 502 on the 5th floor. Room 502 is just a few steps away from the lift, and is forwards facing so you can see straight out into Southwark Street. A week at the Mercure...

Advantages: Reasonably priced!
Disadvantages: Rooms basic.

...I stayed at the Mercure in December 2005. It was a bit of last minute booking - booked it on the Friday and then travelled on the Monday. Due to this it was the literally the only place in central London available for the week and prior to this I had never even heard of the hotel! Location - It is literally just behind the Tate Modern and Millenium Bridge. It is about 10mins walk from the hotel to the nearest tube at London Bridge so it is relatively easy to get about. Rooms - Rooms are basic. Similar to staying in an Ibis or Travellodge. They do have everything you need though - TV, tea and coffee facilities etc. And they seemed clean. Facilities - The hotel has a small gym. In has a restaurant and bar but I never ate or drink so can't comment on this. Staff all seemed relatively friendly. Price - It was between £60...

Cheated by Grand Mercure

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Very bad experience

...I strongly advise travellors to avoid Grand Mercure Bangkok for following reasons: 1. What you see in the photos is NOT what you stay, especially some of the deluxe rooms have not been renovated at all and feel entirely old (1-star?). This is very dishonest because we get an impression of the hotel in pictures that is far from reality. 2. They confirmed my internet booking but on arrival were unable to provide the non-smoking room reserved and put me in a smoking room on a smoking floor. They offered NO REFUNDS even if I wanted to change hotel. 3. They promised to move me to a non-smoking room the next day, even told me the new room number -- but the next day they gave that room to another customer and told me to stay in the same room as the hotel was fully booked. 4. The staff were unable to DO anything except apologize...

Noisy and Basic - I won't go back.

Advantages: I'm really struggling to think of any good reason to stay here
Disadvantages: Smelly, noisy and tiny

...Unfortunately the hotel where I normally stay in Bremen was fully booked. It was probably my own fault for leaving the booking so late and was not helped by the travel agent 'forgetting' to make a booking. With the Intercity full, I was sent to the Mercure. I had seen the hotel from the outside many times as it's on the Bahnhofplatz, directly opposite the main entrance to the station. Seen from outside the main impression is that this is a big hotel - stretching right from the corner across several shops and bars. My expectation based on too many nights in Accor-group hotels is that anything less than Novotel in the Accor-family is likely to be pretty poor. I checked in at about 7 pm and the reception desk was not busy. The receptionist was pleasant, more or less efficient (she couldn't find my paperwork and getting a code...

Grim

Advantages: Location - easily reached by car and public transport
Disadvantages: Cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired, expensive rooms and substandard service

...I suppose there's not much point beating around the bush: when I think back to my stay at the Hotel Mercur in Arhus, it's difficult to find many positive things to say about it. It wasn't my first choice of hotel in the city, but as I had to book at fairly short notice, that didn't bother me unduly. Only when I arrived and told colleagues where I would be staying did their reaction trigger a faintly uneasy feeling: "You're at the Mercur? Oh. Hmm. Well, I suppose you can't change it now". That much was correct - it appears that the hotel capacity in Denmark's second city has not kept pace with the commercial developments, and there is quite a shortage of available beds. Of course, this means that the hotels have no incentive to mount any sort of pricing war to take business from one another - there is no need to drop prices as high...

Disadvantages: Not worth the full rate, some unwelcoming staff

...I recently reviewed an Ibis hotel in Austria and a fellow Ciao member expressed surprise that I should write a review on this topic. Thinking about it I can see why; one chain hotel is pretty much like any other and if you want to know about the location well you can easily find out on the hotel website. All of which made me think I would probably not bother reviewing the Mercure Mitte Hotel in Hannover but some interesting points arose during my visit and I thought it worth voicing them aloud here. A chain hotel is not usually my chosen type of accommodation, partly because I don't like to spend too much but also because I'm not a fan of faceless hotels with no character. How close should an airport hotel be?

Advantages: Nice enough hotel, good for meetings
Disadvantages: Keep in mind the time you need to transfer to the airport

...and charge well over the odds for their proximity. And the third group - the Cinderellas of airport hotels - are the off-airport hotels, often offering cheap (or not so cheap) room and parking deals and far too often, not as close to the airport as you'd expect them to be. Last week I needed a room for an overnight stop at Amsterdam airport and when the two hotels at the airport came back with ridiculous prices in the £250-350 per room range, our secretary put her foot down and booked me into the Mercure Amsterdam Airport at a price of Euro135 for the night. My first reaction was horror - but I calmed down once I realised I was confusing the Mercure with the Ibis (another in the Accor hotel chain) where I'd once spent a very noisy and uncomfortable night. Once I knew it wasn't the Ibis, I was fine and quite happy to save a load of money...

Charming little hotel

Advantages: Location, good staff, decent breakfast, comfy rooms
Disadvantages: No window in our room, air con switched off in winter

...I stayed at this charming little hotel last December for a week, I booked it through Air Miles, they gave me a choice of hotels to stay in Vienna but with the few thousand air miles I had collected it limited me to a small number of hotels close to the city centre rather than plush five star establishments. Price equivelant would have been approx £55-£60. I chose this one as I have stayed at Mercure hotels before in Barcelona & Paris & was left impressed by their value or money, clean & decent rooms & I always received a decent breakfast. When on holiday I look at hotels to provide me with a bed at night & a decent breakfast, the reminder of the time is spent out & about, sightseeing. We arrived at the hotel & was swiftly & efficiently checked in, the informed us that they didn't have a restaurant which wasn't a problem as the hotel...

A Place to Rest your Weary Head in Budapest

Advantages: Clean, modern, good breakfast, mainly helpful staff and reasonable location

Apart from that the only criteria was that the hotel be centrally located and clean. The hotel Budapest Metropol certainly fitted the above criteria and we booked the rooms through www.superbreak.com as they were offering four nights for the price of three on a bed & breakfast basis...

I Didn't Want to Leave Lovely Holland House

Advantages: Comfortable, clean, not far from station or city centre. Very high standard of rooms.
Disadvantages: Poor TV reception, terrible tea at breakfast!

...The Mercure chain owns two hotels in Bristol. One is the Brigstow in Welsh Back, a busy area for nightlife right beside the river. The second is the Holland House Hotel and Spa, only five minutes walk from the Brigstow but in a quieter spot on Redcliffe Hill. Choosing the quieter option, I stayed for a Saturday night at the four star Holland House in July 2009. First Impressions After travelling by train, I had a walk of around seven minutes from Bristol Temple Meads station to Holland House. Be aware if you are taking your car the hotel enforces a parking charge of £10 per 24 hours. This is quite expensive in my opinion and would add substantially to your final bill if you were staying a few nights. Check-in is after 2pm., and on showing my confirmation letter to the receptionist I was dealt with very politely...
