A Place to Rest your Weary Head in Budapest
Advantages: Clean, modern, good breakfast, mainly helpful staff and reasonable location
Disadvantages: One member of staff rude.
...Hotel: Mercure Budapest Metropol
Address: 58 Rakoczi, Budapest,1074, Hungary Telephone: 00 36 (0) 1 462 8100
Travelling with a group at a popular time such as New Year can often make finding hotels difficult. This year I was single so needed a single room, and this was proving to be difficult as many places did not offer single rooms and if they did they were more of the two star variety (and not good 2 stars according to some reviews) so had to bite the bullet and get a room that was only a fraction less than the price of my friends' doubles. Apart from that the only criteria was that the hotel be centrally located and clean.
The hotel Budapest Metropol certainly fitted the above criteria and we booked the rooms through www.superbreak.com as they were offering four nights for the price of three on a bed & breakfast basis...

Beautiful Budapest
Advantages: Beatiful sights, lots to see
Disadvantages: Some of the shops were quite expensive, many of the shops were high street stores like what we have in the UK
...As many of you know, I have just returned from Budapest. It is one of my life's ambitions to visit all the capital cities of Europe so I was thrilled when my parents said we could go to Budapest. Budapest is the capital city of Hungary. Hungary is located in Central Europe, bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Hungary developed closer ties with Western Europe, and joined the European Union on May 1, 2004. Budapest is the seventh largest city in the European Union.
Buda and Pest became united as Budapest in 1873. Buda and Pest are located on opposite banks of the River Danube, with Buda on the west and Pest on the East. The hotel I was staying in was located on the riverside of Pest.

Budapest Marriott
Advantages: Beautiful hotel with friendly staff
Disadvantages: none
...In February, I went to Budapest with my parents for a few days. My dad booked the break over the internet (flights and accommodation) so he chose the hotel that we stayed in. Having stayed in a Marriott hotel on a previous holiday, I was not disappointed when he told us that we would be staying in a Marriott in Budapest. What I didn't know until we got there was that we would be staying in a junior suite! (The room was discounted when we stayed so we got a better room for our money! :)
The Budapest Marriott is located on the riverside of Pest and had a fantastic view of the river Danube. We were lucky enough to have a water facing room. The hotel was within walking distance of the main attractions in the city centre.
The hotel was about 20 minutes form the airport and cost approximately 35 Euros (about £24) to get there. Upon...

Luxury in Budapest
Advantages: Clean, quiet, luxurious
Disadvantages: None
..."Member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the Year"
As a surprise (good behaviour??), hubby booked a 3 night short break to Budapest, it being a place I had shown an interest in visiting.
We arrived in Budapest in the evening and because it was snowing heavily and we had no idea where we were going, we jumped into a taxi and gave the address of the hotel. After a relatively short and very picturesque drive, we arrived at the hotel which is situated on a wide tree lined avenue, Andrassy Ut. We later found out that this is the principal thoroughfare in Budapest and is known as the Champs Elysees of Hungary, situated as it is in the Embassy district, and close to major attractions.
**First Impressions**
These are always important, and as the taxi pulled up into the front area which was rather like a modern cobbled courtyard, these...

BUDAPEST 2008
Advantages: Great for adults, cheap, cultural
Disadvantages: Not much for Kids, the language.
...I cannot resist quoting from a beautifully written article that I read after my recent trip to Budapest :-
"midnight in the enchanting décor of the Rudas Turkish baths. Half asleep we slip among languid bodies in the red marble octagonal basin. ?..?it's easy to relax into the ambient hubbub which you can muffle by sinking up to your ears.??and we float lost in daydreams."
Budapest has a turbulent history with its greatest period arguably being the 19th Century when it emulated Vienna as one of Europe's greatest cities.
However, during World War 2, the Germans did a good job of gutting Budapest and when they were forced to leave by the oncoming Russian army, they blew up all the bridges, including the famous Chain Bridge, which was originally based on the idea of the chain bridge in Marley, Buckinghamshire. Luckily most...

Budapest - I'll Be Back
Advantages: Easy to get around. Plenty to see. Luckily, most people in tourism speak English
Disadvantages: Unfathomable language
...I can't pretend that what follows is a true travel guide to Budapest, since we only went there for a long weekend, but it's a taster. Rather than try to see everything fleetingly, we opted for one of two items that took our fancy, vowing, no doubt, to come back again. Since going there, which is MONTHS ago now, there have been riots in the streets of the capital in protest of a government that lied to its people - Londoners will feel entirely at home.
****************************************************************** **
JULY 2006 - It had been a long time coming, but starting in the previous year with a weekend trip to Prague, which I never did get round to writing about, the eastern European cities are now on our personal agenda - somewhat belatedly in some of my friends' view.
You know the kind of thing.
"Of course we...

Budapest on a Boat.
Advantages: Location walking distance from most, tram route also close by.
Disadvantages: Small Rooms (cabins) but it is a Boat.
...LETS STAY ON A BOAT, my sister in law chirped when we were looking into Budapest..
There are 4 members of the FOUNTAIN TRAVEL CLUB, us 2 brothers and our far better halves Jane and Ros.
Well it is Cheap perked Robert the Accountant of the Group.
So we arrived at Budapest Airport with our booking confirmed.
Transfer from the Airport was easy, there is a desk in arrivals. You quote the Hotel pay the fare, they then give you a booking paper, you sit for about 10 mins then a driver Turns up calls your name and off you go in a Minibus. I suspect the time you wait depends on the bookings as we shared the minibus with 3 other drop offs, but it was a bargain and we were not in a hurry.
We drew up alongside the BOTEL first impression looks good.
Checked in and had two 2 berth cabins next to each other.
Used the word...

London Mercure - just what the doctor ordered!
Advantages: Very close to Tate Modern, and Southwark tube station
Disadvantages: Located on the other side of the river from the likes of Oxford Street
...I stayed at the London Mercure London City last weekend as part of a birthday treat from my boyfriend (I believe he booked it as part of a deal with rail tickets/show tickets/hotel, so am unable to tell you how much the hotel costs separately!). We stayed there for one night (a Saturday) after spending the day shopping in Oxford Street and the evening watching Phantom of the Opera at the London Palladium.
We were able to check-in from 2 o'clock onwards, and we arrived at approximately 5pm. We were greeted at reception by a member of staff and a trainee, and were offered a smoking or non-smoking room. We opted for a non-smoking room and were given room 502 on the 5th floor.
Room 502 is just a few steps away from the lift, and is forwards facing so you can see straight out into Southwark Street. It is a two-person room with a decent...

Budding Budapest
Advantages: Superb architecture, easy to find your way around
Disadvantages: Somewhat dour air around it
...Budapest is the capital of Hungary which was one of the first Eastern bloc countries to become more open in the late 1980s. As the capital city it is home to many of Hungary's government buildings and historically important venues. A city steeped in history it is a superb venue to visit for those with an interest in architecture - I found it one of the most fascinating cities I have visited.
GETTING THERE
By air:
Budapest is situated in central Hungary and is served by an international airport which is approximately 10miles from the city centre. Flights from Britain to Hungary are by either Malev or British Airways. The airport is quite small considering its international status and is easy to find your way around with a few small duty free shops.
There are a number of choices to get from the airport to the city...

KK Opera Hotel Budapest
Advantages: Good city centre location, great froiendly staff
Disadvantages: small rooms, poor showers.
..., the opera, restaurants. Historic buildings etc.
There is a restaurant called the Belcanto which is right outside the main door and on the corner of the same building. It has a famous reputation for its singing waiters. I looked through the windows but didn't fancy it alone but it looked like fun. It certainly received a rave mention in another Ciao review of Budapest.
My one really big accolade was for the staff - they were so friendly and efficient. I tend to eat in my hotel when I'm alone and I had lunch, dinner and the free breakfast. The food that I paid for was fine. The waitress where I had dinner was so ahead of the game - without even looking in my direction - there were plenty of other diners - she seemed to know instinctively when I wanted something else and almost appeared by telepathy.
Breakfast was a large self service...
