...I suppose there's not much point beating around the bush: when I think back to my stay at the Hotel Mercur in Arhus, it's difficult to find many positive things to say about it. It wasn't my first choice of hotel in the city, but as I had to book at fairly short notice, that didn't bother me unduly. Only when I arrived and told colleagues where I would be staying did their reaction trigger a faintly uneasy feeling: "You're at the Mercur? Oh. Hmm. Well, I suppose you can't change it now". That much was correct - it appears that the hotel capacity in Denmark's second city has not kept pace with the commercial developments, and there is quite a shortage of available beds. Of course, this means that the hotels have no incentive to mount any sort of pricing war to take business from one another - there is no need to drop prices as high...

Review of Hotel Mercur, Arhus

London Mercure - just what the doctor ordered!

Advantages: Very close to Tate Modern, and Southwark tube station
Disadvantages: Located on the other side of the river from the likes of Oxford Street

...I stayed at the London Mercure London City last weekend as part of a birthday treat from my boyfriend (I believe he booked it as part of a deal with rail tickets/show tickets/hotel, so am unable to tell you how much the hotel costs separately!). We stayed there for one night (a Saturday) after spending the day shopping in Oxford Street and the evening watching Phantom of the Opera at the London Palladium. We were able to check-in from 2 o'clock onwards, and we arrived at approximately 5pm. We were greeted at reception by a member of staff and a trainee, and were offered a smoking or non-smoking room. We opted for a non-smoking room and were given room 502 on the 5th floor. Room 502 is just a few steps away from the lift, and is forwards facing so you can see straight out into Southwark Street. I Didn't Want to Leave Lovely Holland House

Advantages: Comfortable, clean, not far from station or city centre. Very high standard of rooms.
Disadvantages: Poor TV reception, terrible tea at breakfast!

...The Mercure chain owns two hotels in Bristol. One is the Brigstow in Welsh Back, a busy area for nightlife right beside the river. The second is the Holland House Hotel and Spa, only five minutes walk from the Brigstow but in a quieter spot on Redcliffe Hill. Choosing the quieter option, I stayed for a Saturday night at the four star Holland House in July 2009. First Impressions After travelling by train, I had a walk of around seven minutes from Bristol Temple Meads station to Holland House. Be aware if you are taking your car the hotel enforces a parking charge of £10 per 24 hours. This is quite expensive in my opinion and would add substantially to your final bill if you were staying a few nights. Check-in is after 2pm., and on showing my confirmation letter to the receptionist I was dealt with very politely...

A week at the Mercure...

Advantages: Reasonably priced!
Disadvantages: Rooms basic.

...I stayed at the Mercure in December 2005. It was a bit of last minute booking - booked it on the Friday and then travelled on the Monday. Due to this it was the literally the only place in central London available for the week and prior to this I had never even heard of the hotel! Location - It is literally just behind the Tate Modern and Millenium Bridge. It is about 10mins walk from the hotel to the nearest tube at London Bridge so it is relatively easy to get about. Rooms - Rooms are basic. Similar to staying in an Ibis or Travellodge. They do have everything you need though - TV, tea and coffee facilities etc. And they seemed clean. Facilities - The hotel has a small gym. In has a restaurant and bar but I never ate or drink so can't comment on this. Staff all seemed relatively friendly. Price - It was between £60...

A Typical Small Dutch Hotel

Advantages: Reasonable cost, attractive architecture
Disadvantages: Service could have been better

...Bergen Op Zoom is a small town not far from Rotterdam. I visited it recently whilst doing business in the nearby petrochemical area. The town is quaintly Dutch with lots of nice bars and restaurants. I stopped at The Hotel de Draak operated under the Mercure name. Like the town the hotel is old and it occupies a good position in the corner of the main square the Grote Markt. Parking is available either outside the hotel in the square of for Nfl 14.50 a night they have a private secure parking area nearby. The hotel has only 34 rooms but they are spread on 6 floors. There is a lift which is also very old but seemed up to the job each time I used it. The building itself is a typical town centre town house much loved and seen in the Netherlands. It all seemed quaintly untouched by time with old beams and doors and chandeliers. Sadly some...

WE TURNED IT INTO A HEN HOTEL!!

Advantages: Style without too much cost
Disadvantages: Spent a foutune on Taxi's

...Stayed at the Hotel for the weekend 18/19 Feb 06. Relieved to find this was a delightful establishment, very clean, friendly hotel. En-suite rooms were relatively large, VERY comfortable, well decorated. Cleanliness is top of my list of priorities and this definitely fitted the bill. Nice licensed bar, evening meals (didn't sample those). Breakfast was well cooked 'English' plus toast and cereal - excellent, not the greasy stuff you get in some places. Hotel located an easy short walk from most popular destinations in the area! We were a 'hen' party of 13 but had given assurances that we were not immature, rowdy, drunken types (true). There were also a couple of other single females there and 3 lads, all of which behaved impeccably, we probably all rolled home at various times in the small hours but there wasn't any late night...

Charming little hotel

Advantages: Location, good staff, decent breakfast, comfy rooms
Disadvantages: No window in our room, air con switched off in winter

...I stayed at this charming little hotel last December for a week, I booked it through Air Miles, they gave me a choice of hotels to stay in Vienna but with the few thousand air miles I had collected it limited me to a small number of hotels close to the city centre rather than plush five star establishments. Price equivelant would have been approx £55-£60. I chose this one as I have stayed at Mercure hotels before in Barcelona & Paris & was left impressed by their value or money, clean & decent rooms & I always received a decent breakfast. When on holiday I look at hotels to provide me with a bed at night & a decent breakfast, the reminder of the time is spent out & about, sightseeing. We arrived at the hotel & was swiftly & efficiently checked in, the informed us that they didn't have a restaurant which wasn't a problem as the hotel...

How close should an airport hotel be?

Advantages: Nice enough hotel, good for meetings
Disadvantages: Keep in mind the time you need to transfer to the airport

...and charge well over the odds for their proximity. And the third group - the Cinderellas of airport hotels - are the off-airport hotels, often offering cheap (or not so cheap) room and parking deals and far too often, not as close to the airport as you'd expect them to be. Last week I needed a room for an overnight stop at Amsterdam airport and when the two hotels at the airport came back with ridiculous prices in the £250-350 per room range, our secretary put her foot down and booked me into the Mercure Amsterdam Airport at a price of Euro135 for the night. My first reaction was horror - but I calmed down once I realised I was confusing the Mercure with the Ibis (another in the Accor hotel chain) where I'd once spent a very noisy and uncomfortable night. Once I knew it wasn't the Ibis, I was fine and quite happy to save a load of money...

Hotel International

Advantages: Location, breakfasts

...I recently went on a cultural girlie trip with a friend to Paris. I was left to do all the booking. I was looking for a reasonable hotel, near a metro stop, which included breakfast. I came across the Hotel International on various travel sites and it seemed fairly highly rated so I booked us in for three nights. LOCATION: The hotel is located 6 Rue Auguste Barbier in the 11th Arrondissement. The nearest Metro stop is Garcourt which was a two minute walk away and it was a five minute walk to Republique which gives good links to other lines. It's not really central enough to avoid the Metro and walk to the attractions but it was located so close to a stop that it seemed ideal. PRICE: Prices vary depending on size of room and season. There are singles, doubles and triples available. We paid Euro254 for the whole time...

...A few weeks ago my friend and I were over in Holland doing another of our war tours. Without having booked anything we had arrived in the eastern town of Nijmegen around seven o'clock on a Friday night and headed for the railway station, assuming that there would be plenty of hotels in the immediate vicinity. In this assumption we were wrong, there being just the one hotel, the Mercure. This hotel is situated next door to the railway station and, standing alone and being approximately seven stories high, is quite conspicuous.
