...Many years ago on a holiday to the Isle of Skye I discovered I had forgotten to pack my walking boots! A trip to the Island outdoor shop was necessary and after trying on several different makes I finally opted for a pair of Merrell walking shoes. Fast forward almost a decade and I can honestly say these were the best pair of shoes I have ever bought. Sadly after walking many miles my shoes had started to show their age! A few months ago I decided it was time to buy a new pair. Having had such a positive experience with Merrell I knew I wanted to stick with the brand. A trip to my local Milletts revealed a few styles in the Merrell range. I have fairly skinny ankles and so find that high walking boots tend to rub my ankle bone. Advantages: Good comfort & support
Disadvantages: Not waterproof

...Buy one and a half sizes up from your normal size. I am a size six and a half normally, and would not have been comfortable in anything other that the size eight that I bought. The boots are NOT waterproof, even after the first use in mildly wet conditions. I will have to buy a spray to see if I can make them waterproof. I had read other reviews saying that these boots were not waterproof, but decided to go for them anyway and waterproof them myself if necessary, as I needed the support or this boot. They are very comfortable & supportive. I bought these particularly for the arch support, as I have plantar faciitis. I had two blisters after first use, on the inside edge of my right foot, but this seemed to be just a case of wearing them in. Seemed fine on second wearing....

Wonderful walking boots for snow-terrains

.... . Ahhh Nancy Sinatra, that takes me back. Right, quite a challenge this - steel cap boots eh? Firstly they may not actually have steel in the toe caps, many boots now have other lighter materials instead, Kevlar for instance. The same material is also used in the mid sole to protect against nails etc. I have a pair that has done me proud for many years, and I have no idea what is inside the toes, I just know they are very comfortable, they are also light and they breath. When they get wet, they just get dry again. I assume they are Goretex but just can not remember. The soles have a chunky pattern like commando soles, and the top of the upper has a ring of padding, which makes them very comfy indeed. I can wear these boots with fairly thin socks and stay cool, and in winter I can squeeze into them with thick, merino wool...

I got hold of one of our Sherpas and after pointing at my feet and saying ?BLISTER? several times in a very loud voice (can you believe that some of the natives still don?t speak English properly?), the little chap gave me a pack of Boots Hydrocolloid Blister Plasters. Apparently he picked them up in a local village on the way up to base camp ? Boots must really be branching out, these days. These hydrocolloid plasters are jolly modern and scientific, though ? quite unlike anything I have ever seen. One of the chaps up here explained to me how they work, which was uncommonly decent of him. You see, these plasters have a sort of gel in the middle of them that pad the blister so it doesn?t hurt so much to walk around (which is rather important as we have an 85 mile trek back to our hotel).
