Poor, even by the Nu-Metal Standard
Review of Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park by hybridreality

Advantages: The occasional catchy melody
Disadvantages: The rest of the album

...The nu-metal craze, was thankfully short lived, the obsession with poor musicianship and mixing rap with metal was not the best idea that anyone ever had. Linkin park were one of the many bands to jump on the aforementioned bandwagon, mixing their "unique" blend of metal, hip hop and what can only really be described as dance. The vocals are cringeworthy, a whining post teenager pushing out lyrics of self harm and how its such a terrible world. The only saving grace on this album (and I use that term loosely, as this album should not be saved in any circumstance) is that the occasional song has a few catchy melodies, which sadly I am now sick of after hearing them repeatedly driven into my ears from all rock clubs of early noughties. Sadly, the band went even more downhill from here, which I believed was an impossible feat... Read review

Great, but not for elitist black-metallers.
Review of Figure Number Five - Soilwork by ShadowCreator

Advantages: Catchy, high quality, aggressive, pumping, some electronics
Disadvantages: Radio listeners will not like the vocals, hardcore BM listeners might be turned off

...captures effectively. To be honest, I know that I'm about as open-minded as any metalhead can get. As well as metal I listen to a huge amount of post-rock, industrial, ambient, neofolk, and a whole bunch of other non-metal artists. So, while I do understand the qualms of some who exclusively stick to metal (especially those who keep to strong death/black metal), I do believe that this is a strong album. However, I do believe that Soilwork is taking a dangerous path. Should they get much more mainstream than this, they could become utter garbage (sold out, etc), even to the most open-minded listener, so I hope that if they do not return a huge amount to their past style, they stay around this area (they don't seem to have gone that far with STD). Overall, I'd say that the best songs on this album are Light the Torch, The Mindmaker, Figure... Read review

Perfect Gift for Golfer in Your Life
Review of clubcare.co.uk by buzzz

Advantages: Personalisation and easy cleaning
Disadvantages: can't think of any

...I have recently purchased a set of Clubcare golf club covers for my son. I purchased them online but you can also phone or fax. They arrived in 10 days, beautifuly packaged, making a pretty impressive looking gift. They come in a set of nine covers, three metalic gold, three metalic silver and three metalic bronze, and they come with a personalised cut out initial of your choice. They are made from something called "Elastomer" and have the extra advantage of being able to just rinse them under the tap to clean them, a quick squeeze and shake and like magic they are bone dry and ready to protect the beloved clubs. My son is impressed and that takes some doing! You can purchase Clubcare golf club covers from: www.clubcare.co.uk telephone 0151 242 0025 fax 0151 242 0001 Cost is just £19.99 + £2.99 post and packaging. But I have... Read review

LEAD id RAIN...
Review of Nouveau Gloaming - Code by knight_of_the_soundtable

Advantages: moody morbid motifs...
Disadvantages: ...below a gruesome patina of black metal

......whether it be heavy post punk speed riff barrage & croaked vocals (as in 'the cotton optic'), ghost ship shanties & sickened mantric melancholic murmurs wrapped in a stifling distorted guitar sound carpet (as in 'brass dogs'), hectic industrialized black metal monotony melted into dissolving acerbic throat-singing & fading pathetic chants for salvational oblivion (as in 'an enigma in brine'), bass-hollowed and blood-soaked bars of heavy blues-butchered doom metal and gothic incantations against a backdrop of rainy insanity (as in 'a cloud formed teardrop asylum'), the bitter sound of fast-paced stampeding war machines haunted by burning ghosts of madness and finally shredded into pieces during a frantic dervish dance of death (as in 'aeon in cinders'), morbidly picturesque and almost symphonic melodies of withered yet sublime song... Ambient metal?
Review of Panopticon - Isis by des901

Advantages: 7 pieces of perfection, majetic, melodic, heavy, drippin with atmosphere
Disadvantages: Very little, some may complain it is too similiar to previous release 'Oceanic'

...Isis has truly come a long way. Initially the band started out as an extremely bombastic marriage of hardcore and metal, that was rooted somewhere between the post hardcore atmosphere of Neurosis and the sludgy pummeling sound of Godflesh and the Melvin's. This style was displayed on early e.p's such as 'the red sea' and there debut album 'celestial'. The follow up, and previous release to this one being reviewed, 'oceanic' received critical acclaim and plaudits from across the board. Oceanic, in comparison to previous Isis release's moved away from the industrial sludge of earlier release's and moved closer to there post rock influences, such as Mogwai & Godspeed you black emperor. The post rock influence had always been hinted at in previous Isis work, but it was first fully realised on the release of oceanic. The album... Read review

Oh dear what is metal coming to
Review of Slipknot [PA] - Slipknot by mayhem

Advantages: One or two catchy songs
Disadvantages: Everything

...When I first heard about Slipknot I was quite intrigued. Nine men in boiler suits and masks going completely mental on stage! What really got me interested was when I saw them live on TFI Friday. After seeing that, I just had to have the CD. I ordered it off the Internet, and two weeks later it arrived via the post! When I got home I put the CD straight into the player and listened to it for an hour. At the end of that hour, I decided that out of all the songs I had listened to, only a couple were any good, like “(sic)” and “Wait and Bleed”. The rest just seemed to blend together into a boring, down tuned, monotonous wall of noise. There is also much swearing, and the song "Surfacing" is just a bucket full of this. I was quite disappointed, but optimistic at the same time, I thought it would grow on me in the next few weeks. A month... Read review

Rock Box Rocks
Review of Rock Box by thisnamesux

Advantages: Great selection of CD's, Low Prices
Disadvantages: None

...Near to where I live there is a relatively small shop called Rock Box. It is primarily a Record store, specializing in rock, metal, punk and nu metal music (although they do have a few pop singles and albums) As well as CD's, they also stock Hoodies, t-shirts, posters etc... and they always have listening posts to listen to CD's and new releases. The prices are very reasonable. Each new release, for example, System Of A Down - Toxicity (Released last monday) is £11.99 instead of the £13 + that you would pay at Virgin. I frequently go in there, and am freinds with some of the staff, which is cool. They have a great selection of CD's on sale, and, if they don't stock it, they will order it for you! You can also take in your old unwanted CD's and exchange them for another CD or cash. They occaisionally get great bands instore to do live... Read review

Interetsing Vietnam Pic
Review of Full Metal Jacket DVD by wyn

Advantages: First part is really good
Disadvantages: Second part not so good

...This Stanley Kubrick film is an adaption of a novel called The Short Timers, which was about the dehumanization of soldiers during the Vietnam War. The first half of the film shows a group of raw recruits going through the hell of marine training. They are put through their paces by drill instructor Lee Ermey, who torments one particular lad to his limit. Post-training, we move to the action in Hue City. This story here is seen mostly through the eyes of a cynical reporter nicknamed Joker (Matthew Modine). As a Vietnam War film, Full Metal Jacket is notable for focusing on the urban battles, rather than jungle action. So we don't get the rice paddies and brown rivers of Apocalypse Now or The Deer Hunter. Also interesting to note that Kubrick, who lives and works in England, recreated the Vietnam battle areas in London's docklands. It... Read review

A MASTERCLASS IN METAL
Review of Roadrunner United (The All-Star Sessions/+DVD) - Various Artists by metal_yarnold

Advantages: A SELF PROFESED MASTERCLASS IN METAL
Disadvantages: NONE

...Roadrunner United is the collaboration of 55 artists under the roadrunner record label from 42 different bands. All of these artists were headed under 4 team captains: Joey Jordison (The power behind slipknots percussion and I believe still to be the worlds fastest drummer), Mathew K. Heafy (The voice, rhythm and lead player of the new metal core band Trivium - voted band of the year of 2005 across numerous magazines and websites), Dino Cazares (The main writing influence of industrial metallers Fear Factory before his premature departure from the band, currently he is working on his death metal band Brujeria as well as working with numerous other artist on recording etc.) and the final team captain was Robert Flynn (co-founder, singer, guitarist, song writer and producer of the old school metal band Machine Head). Together... Read review
