FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Le Mont Saint-Michel

Advantages: beautiful architecture and atmosphere
Disadvantages: why should it have any! well, kinda expensive to hang around

...Le Mont Saint-Michel The abbey at Mont Saint-Michel has been one of my dream-destinations to visit since, well, literary ages! This is how the story of my addiction started: Back in 1996 I have got a little pocket calendar with a beautiful cathedral on the front, I have fallen in love with it the moment I laid my eyes on it for the first time! However, the photo bore no description and even if I really did try, I was never able to find out what and where the place was....imagine my frustration as I'm a keen traveler and photographer! I've kept the little picture and every now and then it tortured my mind again. However, I have to say back then I had a strong suspection that it would be someplace in France as you can't iss the resemblance of French architecture. The redemption came in 2006 when my girlfriend told me we were going...

Michel Thomas, the god of language teaching

Advantages: Suitable for all learners
Disadvantages: Limited range of languages

...As a graduate in Modern Languages and Linguistics, I am always interested in revolutionary techniques of learning languages. Recently I came across a series of language courses by Michel Thomas, and was very impressed. I mainly studied French and German at university, but have always wanted to learn some Italian, so thought I'd buy the 2 hour introductory course in it. I wasn't disappointed. BASICS Courses come in two main formats: the full 8 hour course or just the first 2 hours of the full course. The two hour course consists of 2 CDs (or cassettes) and the eight hour courses consists of 8 CDs (or cassettes). Courses are available in French, German, Spanish and Italian, and are specifically designed for those with and without prior language experience. The courses will not make you "fluent" (this takes years!), but will certainly...

Jean Michel Jarre - AERO

Advantages: 5.1 surround sound, Jarre at his absolute best.
Disadvantages: None, even if you own the original tracks.

...This is a review of the truly superb CD and DVD of Jean Michel Jarres 'Aero' which will be in split into 2 parts on this same page... i will start with the CD, then the DVD. Firstly i would like to offer a little background to the great man and his featured recordings as i find this relevant in order to help anyone who is unfamiliar with JMJ appreciate and understand this specific recording a little better. Jean Michel Jarre (JMJ) was born on the 24th August 1948 in Lyon, France. His father (Maurice Jarre) was a very talented composer himself who helped write music themes for 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Dr Zhivago' to name but two. JMJ is in the Guiness book of records several times but perhaps most notably for his live Paris show where he performed to close to 2 million people at the Arche de la Défense, he is clearly no...

Jean-Michel Jarre Pulls It Off

Advantages: Some new tracks. Enhanced old tracks - then of course there's the DVD
Disadvantages: Not much new for something purporting to be a new album

...Fictitious Headline: ?Jean-Michel Jarre Pulls It Off?. Pulls It Off? Creates an original new evolutionary step in electronic music? Plays a new musical instrument using a nuclear reactor as its power source, whilst dressed in a lead-lined overcoat and gauntlets at the centre of a 25-mile exclusion zone? No ? when I say ?Pulls It Off', I mean 'a fast one'. He seems to have craftily dressed a ?Best Of...? compilation as something new. Let?s be charitable and call it a ?Re-mix? at least. ?Le mouton, habillé comme l?agneau? as we say in English ?Well, fancy buying it if you knew that? I hear you say. Well, I didn?t, but I did get it for Christmas having dropped heavy hints months ago that I?d heard he?d got a new album coming out. On first appearances, Aero IS something new. For one thing the normal CD jewel...

Jean Michel Does It Again

Advantages: Beautiful Inspirational Music
Disadvantages: Boring DVD

...Aero is what I can only describe as wonderful. I have loved Jean Michel Jarre ever since I saw him perform Oxygene, complete with laser light show, at the London Dockland. This was particularly good value at only £9.97 in Tesco as it is not only a CD but a 5.1 DTS or Dolby Digital Surround Sound DVD. My first thought was to watch the DVD and enjoy the surround sound experience, well, the surround sound experience was great but the DVD was just plain boring. Instead of the many lovely things that he could have used to further enhance the tracks we were subjected to 1hr 45mins of a pair of eyes looking at you. Fortunately you have the option to turn off the video part and so just revel in the music. You are treated to tracks such as the classic Oxygene along with many others that will leave you spellbound. One of the best tracks...

A Family outing to Mont St Michel

Advantages: Free to get in (to main part)
Disadvantages: Difficult / No access for wheelchair/pushchair

...Mont St Michel in the Gulf of St-Malo off the coast of Normandy, France. The Benedictine monastery (founded 708 AD) was used as a prison from the time of the French Revolution (1789-1799) until 1863. I visited Mont St Michel on a day trip during a fmily holiday in June. I was with my husband and 2 children (age 2 and 4 months at the time). The day we went was overcast to the first view of the Monastry was not as spectaular as I'm sure it is on a fine day. We paid c5 Euros to park and then walked about 100yards to the entrance and then paid another 1 Euro to use the loo! It was heaving with people when we got there which was a bit scary with a toddler who wanted to run and explore and a pushchair to manouvre. The path were very narrow and cobblestone which was great to see as I love all things historical but it was very...
