Microsoft wireless mouse & keyboard
Advantages: looks smart, easy to install & use, responsive
Disadvantages: batteries wear out quickly
...I purchased this wireless mouse and keyboard set when I got a new computer as I thought it would look smarter and more modern than the wire mouse and keyboard that came with it. I chose this set as I felt that Microsoft had a good reputation and, at £30, this represented good value for money.
This was easy to connect up with the computer, just a simple plug in to the front of the box. That was all that was required to install. The mouse and keyboard each take two batteries. I find that the batteries wear down really quickly. This is frustrating, especially when typing where letters can be missed out in your work, or quite often, the space bar won't function. The batteries in the mouse wear out especially quickly.
Having said that, this is the only flaw I can find with the product. The keyboard is comfortable to type...

Man not mouse... Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse
Advantages: Wireless, Optical, Coverage
Disadvantages: none spotted to date
...I thought it was about time I reviewed the item I probably use more often than most - my mouse!
Product Overview:
As the product title implies it is a wireless, optical and Microsoft. Some more details bar the obvious to help you may be the following:
* Scroll Wheel
* Left/Right Handed
* Customisable buttons
* PC/Mac
* USB or PS/2
I think there are a few colours to choose from. I've got blue/silver and I think there is red/silver and white as another option (but don't hold me to that)
To my knowledge 'Special Edition' is merely colour editions because I didn't notice anything on the packaging to tell otherwise (although as is usual with my new purchases they are out of the wrapper rapid and into use before thought is given!)
Responsiveness:
I have found that however you choose to set this product up, so long as...

Labtec Wireless Optical Mouse.
Advantages: No more wires.
Disadvantages: Eats the batteries.
....
and the optical-tracking technology provides smooth cursor movement on almost all surfaces and eliminates the hassles of mouse pad and cleaning old-fashioned mouse balls.
The only downside to being wireless is that it takes batteries and with this one there is no off switch on the mouse,
so when not using my computer I remove the batteries..... and have noticed by doing this the batteries do last longer, around 3 weeks for me with average usage.
Overall this is a nice and neat looking little mouse and I prefer this much better than my old corded one, although I still have the old one just in case I run out of batteries when I dont have any !
As this was a gift I'm not sure of the price, but have seen it as low as £9.00 online.
SPECIFICATIONS:
Receiver
Batteries
Cordless Mouse
Small PS/2 Receiver and extension cable
Two AA Batteries...

AN EXCELLENT OPTICAL MOUSE
Advantages: Great response, no ball to get dirty, wheel is invaluable
Disadvantages: A bit on the pricey side
..., with a small part coming out of the bottom. Then when you move the mouse back and forth, the ball moves too, and this is picked up by rollers that are in contact with the ball inside the mouse mechanism.
There are two problems with this ? firstly the mouse relies on moving parts. The rollers and springs inside the plastic case don?t last forever, leading to rubbish performance from the mouse. The second problem is dust and dirt. It?s amazing how quickly it builds up inside the cavity where the mouse ball sits in normal operation, and unless you clean it out very regally, the pointer will not move evenly across the screen as you use the mouse.
So, Microsoft being the innovative and creative (ha!) people that they are, they have come up with the Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical, available almost everywhere for about 25 quid.
OK, lets looks...

My Pet Mouse
Advantages: Quality. Sleek. Durable. Responsive
Disadvantages: Range Is A BIt Short.
...This optical mouse takes two AA batteries and as it says on the box, it is totally wireless. I found that upgrading to a wireless desktop made my cluttered desk space slightly more bearable and although it still gets messy, at least I can move things around without yanking the mouse (or keyboard) out of its socket.
The mouse has a matt finish, and this seems to help when you are at your computer eating crisps or popcorn etc. The grease that is usually a pain when it gets on your mouse or keyboard doesn?t cause too many problems here. I?m often a culprit for using the Playstation or computer with greasy hands, but with this mouse it?s more forgivable.
My mouse is actually a different colour scheme than the one pictured ? all black but it?s the same model and I?ve only had it a few weeks now. It definitly has a feel of quality...

Advent wireless optical mouse.
Advantages: fast, responsive
Disadvantages: poor battery life, sometimes needs resetting
...is to acknowledge the signal from the mouse when you use it, and the other is to indicate charging status, red when battery life low. Green when ok.
If you are a heavy mouse user the batteries do not last long, this is one of the mouses downfall, I would recomend buying a cheap, seperate charger and rechargeable batteries to hold in reserve. The other drawback is lock up the mouse can sometimes just freeze for no reason and you have to restart the computer again.
Advantages
Optical so no clogging like a standard trackerball mouse
no leads which get tangled up around your workstation.
Disadvantages
Poor battery life
Once you use this mouse you will never use an old style mouse again, its akin from going back to dial up internet after experiencing broadband ....

Mouse Mats? Pah! Who Needs 'Em?
Advantages: Smart , comfortable, gives the freedom to roam, yea, even unto your trouser leg. Good build-quality
Disadvantages: Needs batteries. Means more money for Gatesy
...October 2004 - I'm updating this review because I now have some more information about battery life, which, if you use a cordless mouse a lot, could be critical in your decision.
*****************************************************
It?s nice to be writing about a Microsoft product that?s a) good and b) something you weren?t more or less forced to buy.
Let?s face it; with the exception of Apple Mac users and those stalwarts who have seen the delights of Linux, Microsoft have more or less got a de facto monopoly of the operating systems market.
However much I dislike this situation, I have to admit that in the hardware field, where more obvious competition exists, they also have very good products, in this case, a ?wireless optical mouse?.
I?ve been a user and proponent of optical mice (as opposed to the ?Three Blind...

Microsoft Optical Wireless Desktop Elite Setup
Advantages: Batterly life, Responsiveness, Range, Feel
Disadvantages: The annoying 'F lock' default
...Microsoft's Wireless Optical Desktop Elite keyboard and mouse combo is the best keyboard ? mouse combo I have seen so far. It has got loads of programmable options, a horizontal scroll wheel, and a fantastic battery life. It doesn't come with a charger beacuse you really don't need one! It?s well suited to you if you don?t want a cluttered up desk.
Based on RF technology, the black and silver setup looks very nice and modern. Simply plug the receiver into the ps/2 ports on the back of your PC and away you go. Of course to get the full features you have to install the IntelliPoint software from the included disc. The simple software allows you to customize the mouse buttons and reassign the keyboard's multitude of specialty keys, which lie along the top of the keyboard. Alternatively, you can program these keys to open everything...

Microsoft Go Wireless Baby
Advantages: No more cables, easy to set up and a joy to use
Disadvantages: A lot of additional costs
...all comes to live.
A lot of wireless controllers made by third parties to work with the likes of the XBox tended to have quite an intermittent signal. That doesn't seem to be the case with the official Microsoft controller, which not only boasts a strong signal but can be used up to 30ft away from the console without the performance and connectivity suffering. The performance of the controller is quite similar to the normal wired controller and with no lag between your actions on the pad and the results on the screen it does seem to be a success.
Overall it would appear that Microsoft have taken the best elements of the original controller, given them a snazzy overhaul, detached the wires and created a controller that is a marked improvement on the previous effort. The only complaint I would have with the wireless controller...

WIRELESS GAMING - AT A PRICE
Advantages: Wireless connectivity to Xbox live, Simply to setup
Disadvantages: Ridiculously expensive, Doesn't come in black to match my Xbox 360 Elite
...If, like me, you have an Xbox 360, you will no doubt be aware of the dynamic and enjoyable facility available to you online, namely Xbox live. Xbox live is a place where you can download demos and game add-ons, chat to your friends, and stream movies and videos direct to your Xbox 360 in glorious high definition. But while the Nintendo Wii and the Sony Playstation 3 can go online straight from the box without any additional hardware, Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, decided not to include wireless connectivity as standard in the Xbox 360.
This leaves you with a couple of options should you wish to get your Xbox 360 online; an Ethernet cable from your router is probably the cheapest way, but in these wireless days I was really looking at reducing the cables stretching around my home, not add to them. There is another method...
