...I have recently upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Ultimate, I would say for me personally there are few differences to note, if you like your side bar gadgets and stream link ins then Vista has an army of these toys to entertain you. Despite lots of hype about the usability of Vista - I find it very easy to use, most software is now compatable with Vista so none of the earlier issues remain about whther it was better to stay with XP. It's a bit of a beast to upload from the DVD and I would reccommend before you do this to go to the Microsoft home page - they have programme they can run on your PC (the Upgrade Advisor) to make sure its up to the job of running Vista - I did this to ensure everything went smoothly. ...save money go to a computer hardware store (Microdirect, Computer Plus or whatever, but NOT a highstreet store) and ask for an OEM (other equipment manufacturer) copy of Vista and a really cheap power supply. Now you have to buy a power supply due to Microsoft's terms-of-service in regards to OEM versions. The OEM version of Vista sets you back around £80 and the power supply will be about £15 so the total is £95. By reading this review you could have saved yourself £85! :) So anyway, I get home and start installing it. Now once you've seen one Microsoft install you've seen them all. This side bar tends to make it run slower however and I have resorted to disabling it as although it is a nice addition to the desktop it is a pain when I am trying to do things and it runs the laptop slower. As well as the widgets everything has had a makeover, all the boxes and menu's, including icons, and I think that it is a big improvement. The new look of Windows is a much needed refreshment of the old XP as that was starting to get boring, I particularly like the little thumbnail boxes you get pop up when you move the cursor over the open pages/folders you have minimised in the task bar. Some people aren't aware that they are alternatives out there and Microsoft know that, that is why I feel they just skimp past the effort that goes into the creation of some of their operating systems. Vista is the new ME by the way, meaning there is already a better version available that promises to be less resource hungry and more stable!
