Microtek ScanMaker 3600
Advantages: Affordable, solid, good quality and you can rest cups of tea on top!
Disadvantages: Sometimes slow to scan and other scanners do have better quality
...We have had out Microtek Scanmaker 3600 for well over 5 years now and it is still going strong and doing the job for our entire family. I'm not sure how much we paid for it, but it was not a lot because we just wanted a basic scanner that could scan in documents. It is very reliable, easy to use, with a suitable range of features but has the tendency to be a bit slow occasionally.
1. Looks, Design and Size
The scanner is fairly good looking, quite elegant and fairly compact. It measures approximately 17" long, 10" across and 4" high so can fit into most desktop areas. It has a solid build to it and rather funky curve on the lid that gives it some added style. Furthermore, the main surface is flat and you can easily rest your cup of tea, lunch or bits of paper on top! The white colour is easy on the eye and fits in to most rooms...

Inexpensive Veteran Scanner, a Household's Friend
Advantages: Durable, Programmable, Easy to Set
Disadvantages: Too Slow for Offices, Quality Pictures Require Changing Settings
...The Microtec ScanMaker 4850 flatbed scanner might seem obsolete due to its quality, being half of what more modern scanners can offer, and the fact it is not a part of a multi-functional copier, but you should not be assumptuous about this device.
Instead of reviewing the mechanics and energy consumption of the scanner, this summary will provide you practical information about the technology in question.
The scanner came with an USB wire and power cord, instruction manual (it was unnecessary, as all you have to do is plug it in and install the software), installation CDs (multi-lingual, one for Max, one for Windows) with plenty of software including Microtek's scanner applications and an OCR application, which is gold, as it turns your scanned material available for editing in Word.
Value for Money

Cheap and not so cheerful
Advantages: Spec for price
Disadvantages: Its apparent design fault
...Please note: I'm a Mac user so the software issues here are Mac-specific and I'm unable to comment on how the 5900 runs with a PC; however, the hardware issue is machine-non-specific!
I bought my first Scanmaker 5900 from GHQ Computers, a reputable store in Britain which specialises in Apple software and hardware. I'd tried several computer superstores locally to no avail. It cost £125 + VAT from GHQ (online) in May 2004.
My choice was governed by budget and special requirements, i.e. I needed 4"x5" transparency scanning. Many scanners provide 35mm film adaptation, but most of those that offer large format fall into the very expensive, 'arts professional' bracket. Up until that point, I'd had a Scanmaker X6 with Light Lid and been reasonably happy with it, though its output quality had certainly declined over the 4 year period. My...

Might be bought at Tescos but still the best
Advantages: easy to set up, easy to use, and very fast
Disadvantages: see below for this
...You would never believe that you could buy a brilliant scanner in a supermarket would you. Well I have!
If you want a brilliant scanner at a brilliant price then go for Microtek Scanner 3600.
I bought this one for £39.99 in Tescos. So I even had points added to our tesco club card!
For this price you not only get the scanner but installation software plus Adobd Photo Deluxe, Ulead photo impact 5 and OCR software.
Setting it up is pretty straightforward but the installation guide tells you to put the installation CD Rom in and then connect the scanner after the software has been installed.
Although this does work you will get a message saying that it cannot of course find the scanner! This could be of putting but just ignore this and carry on.
Anyway once it is up and running its very simple to use, you can even go...

Good site, very bad service
Advantages: Good site, good stock range
Disadvantages: Very, very poor delivery rate and customer support
...the software, and more annoyingly, I didn't hear a word from them about the dispatch being delayed. It just turned up a week late. Oh well, I thought, obviously just a freak, as I had been very pleased with their service before. So let the saga of the scanner commence.
My next purchase from them was a Microtek Scanmaker 8700, a couple of months later. I had to pay for this one by cheque, unlike my previous orders, which were by credit card, and was told that once my cheque had cleared, which would take three working days, the scanner would be dispatched immediately. So taking into account postage time, I would have it in about a week. More than a month later, and I still don't have it, even after several assurances that I'd have it in a few days. So what was going on? I know the cheque cleared fine - no problems.
After a couple of weeks...

Perfection 2450
Advantages: See List
Disadvantages: See List
...not let that stop you from considering this scanner, as I have had great results and no noise from film that I thought might produce just that from it's almost black areas.
Strengths:
2400 dpi resolution, does not show all the dust, etc., low cost, pretty good software-stable-no errors, etc., Fun to use. It will pull out shadow detail-don't let my noise report dissuade you, because it has exceeded my expectations more than a few times.
Weaknesses:
Noise, but only in the blackest of shadow areas that are a large percentage of the image. A tad slow, but what can you expect from a 48bit scanner producing 140+mb? Results are worth it.

Windows XP - Make sure you need it
Advantages: Latest Version, Unites NT & Dos based Architectures
Disadvantages: Very unforgiving to older software
...of money)
Imagine my surprise when I saw RT2 - Platinum edition (runs under XP). Be very sure that you need the features that XP offers you, otherwise you should probably remain with W95,98,ME (or at least have a dual boot machine.
Additionally I had a hell of a job getting my old Microtek scanner to have its drivers recognised. Again Microsoft and Microtek were of little use, and I have had to buy a new scanner .
Check with the Microsoft web site for details on compatibility and make sure your fave software is listed before upgrading....

..., Swedish and Portugese.
It can read any type of font, you see as soon as it encounters a font it does not understand, the product builds up info on the style and adds it to the database for future reference.
RELIABILITY...
OK, sorry to have to say it, but it does tend to crash a lot more on slower Processors, you need at least a 133MhZ processor to run on. Any trouble can be reported to them by contacting the company via www.scansoft.com.
MY OPINION...
In my opinion this software is very useful for manipulating already typed pages, aswell as written ones. The amount of extras is great and what is best is that it works with many scanners including Acer, Agfa, Brother, Canon, Compaq, Epson, Fujitsu, HP, Lexmark, Microtek, Mustek, Plustek, Ricoh, UMAX, Visioneer, and Xerox. The only let down is you need a generally fast processor to...
