Reviews of might and magic
One of the best
Review of Might & Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven (PC) by
Creative
Advantages: Great graphics and varity of things to achieve
Disadvantages: Can be slow at some points
...Might and Magic VI is a RPG game which allows you to take on the characters of 4 people who battle to save the world of Enroth from an evil alien race.
Throughout the game these four increase in level and ablility, gaining valuable experience so you are able to battle the toughest of monsters. You also get given a range of quests to do in order to achieve your final goal.
I found this game one of the best out of the Might and Magic series as the Graphics were excellent and the gameplay was stunning. Although in places it got a little dull and the story line wasn't that well written.
But overall this is a great game and if you like RPG games then this is a must-have!...

Despite graphics and realism, this is perfection!
Review of Might & Magic VII: For Blood and Honor (PC) by
Jacko2006
Advantages: The most addicting game I've EVER played! Game lengh
Disadvantages: The graphics are actually 'painful"
...A long stop away from the action packed shoot 'em up and save the world games, Might & Magic VII is a fantasy worrior game that forces you to build up your players attributes untill you are powerful enough to look back on the enemies you were once stuck on and say "Haha now whos getting burnt??".
As I understand, many would disagree with me when I say this game is fantastic, because of course it depends on your taste. From first judgement Might & Magic VII was not the type of game I would normally be interested in and when I played it I held that opinion...for about 3 minuites. Soon as I noticed that there was a whole world to explore and an unlimited amount of weapons, characters, spells, potions, enemies and shops to upgrade your self for battle I was hooked!
True, this game was a little slow to start, but I'de class...

Royal road to becoming a successful card magician.
Review of The Royal Road to Card Magic - Frank Rigney (Illustrator), Frederick Brane, Frederick Braue, Jean Hugard by
adypunk
Advantages: Many sleights covers and includes tricks to use your new skills.
Disadvantages: Illustrations could be improved
...This book is known as the bible of card magic. I bought this book about a year ago as a beginner hoping to learn some new techniques and tricks. It covers a fantastic array of sleights and manipulations to use in your own magic. I found this book to be best worked from beginning to end, it covers a new sleight with each chapter and then features a handful of tricks which involve the sleight. The book also includes illustrations to aid you in correct handling. This book is aimed at beginners so if you are already an experienced card magician you might not find anything new in this book, however this book is aimed at beginners who want to do this as a hobbie, and not after a "quick trick" to show friends up the pub. Excellent tutorial book and a great reference....

Real Magic
Review of The Magic Cottage - James Herbert by
TOLDYOU
Advantages: Pure fantasy, real magic
Disadvantages: far too short
...magical things occur. This is all very bizarre for the new residents of the Magic Cottage but they soon find themselves being drawn into the cottage’s clutches.
The story really does grab your attention like no other. It’s almost as if I were there myself. The choice of words that James Herbert uses conjures up some really amazing visions for the reader. Although the book is 350 pages long, they whiz by so fast that you find yourself wishing that there were another 350 pages left to read.
On the final page of the book are three quotes by Paracelsus, Crawley and Stringer. The one by Stringer is my particular favourite, it reads, Magic is believing what you shouldn’t – and enjoying the believing.
All in all, The Magic Cottage is a really super book that a reader might enjoy time and time again....

Quest for the true king
Review of Heroes of Might and Magic II (PC) by
Tanelorn
Advantages: Improvement on a fresh and original idea, Longevity of play
Disadvantages: Time consuming, addictive
...After 4 or 5 games, the might and magic RPG series seemed to be grinding to a standstill, even though it had achieved cult status, and New World Computing (3DO) had to find a way to rejuvenate its flagship title.
Enter Heroes of might and magic, a turn based strategy game with new elements not found in their previous party based RPGs ..... and this served its purpose of grabbing a new following for their titles.
Fast forward a year or so, and we find ourselves engrossed in a second installment, Heroes of might and magic 2: The succession wars. The story of the battle between the kindly Roland and his evil brother Archibald for the throne of Erathia (at least thats what the campaign game followed). As in the first game, heroes 2 gave us the opportunity to build up castles (in pre-selected locations), recruit heroes and outfit them...

I thought it was good
Review of Might & Magic VII: For Blood and Honor (PC) by
Creative
Advantages: Lots of freedom and a huge world to explore means hundreds of hours of game play
Disadvantages: Graphics and the last section
...know Might and magic VII has received many bad reviews the wrong side of 50% from various magazines but I have to say I find it to be one of the best games i have ever played.
Yes the graphics are not wonderful and the complicated combat and control system takes a while to get used to, but once you have mastered this all it is one of the most rewarding games ever.
You have a lot of freedom from choosing your characters, voices and statistics to your actions and allegience later on and throughout the game. There is so much to do on this made up world that to find all the treasures, complete all the quests and to work through all possibilities and secret sections took me about 6 months of many hours a day play.
It is better for me then the dungeon and dragon games such as Baldurs Gate as i prefered the 3d world and first person...

Superb Alternate England Story
Review of Magister - Jonathan Wylie by
sjm6
Advantages: Wonderfully written alternate take on familiar places
Disadvantages: not totally escapist if you want hihgh fantasy
...This book is set in England. Not quite the England you or I might walk around in though although in many ways this England is very much like the one I have lived all my life in. Okay the big difference here is that magic exists, and our lead character is studying Magic at the Royal Academy. That is one course I would have enjoyed.
The story is that the main character is assigned a special project by the college principal, which leads him into researching his family's past and the life and works of the greatest magician. This book is superb, simple! I have read Wylie's books before but this is probably the best I have read as yet. Well worth reading!...

More magic, more undead, and a talking dog too!
Review of Lirael - Garth Nix by
flamesparrow
Advantages: Darker and more gripping than Sabriel
Disadvantages: Ends on a cliffhanger
...Lirael is the second book in the Clayr trilogy, and would probably be difficult to understand without having read Sabriel first, as much of the groundwork and magical explanations have already been learnt during Sabriel.
It is centered on Lirael, daughter of the Clayr. The Clayr can see into the future – many futures, they do not know if what they are Seeing is what might be, or what will definitely come to pass. Lirael doesn’t appear to have the gift of Seeing. In her quest to take her mind off what is failure in her eyes, she works on her magical skills, and begins to carve a new destiny for herself. She creates a talking dog, and begins to explore her vast home with her. Soon she finds herself drawn deep into the glacier, fighting free magic creatures along the way. She is Seen by the Clayr, who tell her that she has been Seen...

Avent Magic cup - hooray he can drink out of it
Review of Avent Magic Cup by
Fiona2403
Advantages: found a cup he actually drinks out of
Disadvantages: leaks, lose the valve in the washing up bowl
...be very messy and baby gets more juice than he bargained for!
The magic valve is 2 pieces which fit together, a hard plastic bit with holes in and a soft flexible rubbery type bit. This then slots into the bottom of the spout.
Handles are by choice, they can be bought ready attached to the cup or bought at a seperate time. The handles detach even if bought with the cup.
My little boy quite likes the handles now, but I am slightly frustrated by them because it means the cup does not fit in the cup hole on his pram or in the side pocket of the rucksack that goes everywhere with us. Now I might sound slightly mad here, everyone will be wondering why I simply don't put the cup in the main body of the rucksack and stop wingeing. Well, my main bug bear of the cup is that while the magic valve is so good at preventing spills the screw...

Ancient magic.
Review of Broom by
Bryn_Pearson
Advantages: in myth, it causes sound sleep.
Disadvantages: I know less abut modern applications.
...the bonny bonny broom, the sounder your true love wil sleep.") The strewe must walk nine times around the man she wishes to cast the spell upon. Nine times is a number associated with celtic myth and faeries, so the use of broom might well date back that far.
Some songs suggest that broom may also have protective qualities, that it might serve to ward off malicious forces. The phrase "lay the bent to the bonny broom" comes up in several songs; bent is a grass in this context. It seems to be a chant or warding, although this is my interpretation. Given the context - visitation by a faerie or demon, or murder due to jealousy, protection is a logical thing to be seeking from the plant.
Many plants that have a magical role in folklore turn out to have a practical application in modern life - sometimes the original use is obscured be metaphor...
