A budget base for exploring Milan

Advantages: cheaper than many in the area, clean, comfortable, easy access to sights
Disadvantages: bathroom not great, no restaurant

...Named the 10th most expensive city in the world in terms of cost of living (Mercer's Cost of Living Survey, 2008), Milan isn't generally a city you'd associate with budget hotels. However, that was exactly what I was in search of when travelling to the city for a 3-night stay in October 2008. Knowing that a large proportion of my money would be spent on shopping and eating out, I was on the hunt for accommodation that was cheap, central and comfortable. You'l struggle to find anything that fits the bill in the centre of the city - anything in the Duomo (cathedral) or main shopping areas tends to be more pricey, or cheap for a good reason (i.e., incredibly basic). We were happy to look a little further out, and eventually decided to book a twin room at Hotel Teco through laterooms.com. LOCATION Hotel Teco is located on a tiny...

Milan "No Ashtray" Malpensa

Advantages: Clean, Loads of restaurants, comfy seats
Disadvantages: No where to smoke

...Imagine being tired, yet handcuffed to a running machine thats on full pelt, welcome to Milan Malpensa. The Airport that doesn\'t accommodate the needs of the smoker, (And the staff almost start laughing when you ask where the smoking area is!) brings to you the largest Duty free shop Ive ever seen in the EU, quite a few restaurants and cafe\'s and several bathrooms (Where the occasional smoker hangs out waiting to be handcuffed and pinned to the floor by the Italian Police) The airport is connected to Milan by the Milano-Varese motorway as well by a dedicated train called \"Malpensa Express\". It is also connected to Linate Airport by a scheduled bus service. The Milan airport system has a third international airport, Orio al Serio Airport, which serves low-cost and charter traffic. Malpensa handled over 21.7 million passengers...

Milan and the Lakes

Advantages: Vibrant, cosmopolitan city and stunningly beautiful lakes
Disadvantages: Pricey, dirty and plagued by annoying gypsies

...I went to Milan in early May with my partner. I still don?t really know why I went there, but I suppose I was attracted by the allure of the big city as well as the proximity of the beautiful lakes of northern Italy. I stayed for 7 nights and paid £450 in total for the flight, hotel and transfers to and from the airport. Another £300 or so was spent during the holiday on travel, eating out and entertainment. There is a lot to say, so I have subdivided my comments into suitable headings: HOTEL: The hotel, called ?Delle Nazioni?, was situated within walking distance of the railway station; this was infact one of the reasons why I chose it. Despite being rated three stars, it was a big disappointment; it would have rated no more than two stars in the UK. The room was very small and, although facing the inner courtyard, there was...

Milan in the spring

Advantages: Great shopping
Disadvantages: Smog

...Flights for a pound, how could I turn it down? Flying from Birmingham with Flybe to Milan Bergamo Airport was a new experience for me but the journey to Birmingham Airport is just over an hour from home and the parking is so close to the airport that you don't really need to get the courtesy bus. On arrival at Bergamo there is a Bus to main Centro train station just o/s arrivals for just a few euros with a journey time of around 40 mins. The hotel we chose - the Concorde was out of the City Centre but on one of the 3 tube lines and you could in fact walk in approx 20 mins. The hotel was, however, very luxurious and there was a fantastic Gelateria (ice cream shop) a couple of doors down and lots of other shops on the way to the Duomo which made up for the walk. Aside from the tube there area also trams and buses and you can...

Milan - February 2004

Advantages: Good shops, architecture and food!
Disadvantages: Cost and language.

...I only just came back from a couple of days in Milan so thought now was the best time to write with the memories fresh in my head. I had a really good time and would recommend it! I went with my boyfriend from Saturday night until lunchtime Tuesday. So really we only got 2 full days. I would say 4 full days at most is all I could manage. Not that it wasn't good, just there is only so much you can do and see. Lets start with what is said to be Milan's most popular attraction - The Duomo. In all guide books, brochures and word of mouth opinions we had heard we were told that this is the biggest attraction in Milan and a must see. We decided to go on the first day as we arrived there in case it was hard to find - how daft were we. There is a metro stop at Duomo and as you surface from the underground the massive cathedral is...

milan good to visit but not to live there.

Advantages: plenty to do and see
Disadvantages: crowded polluted noisy dirty

...In 1984 I decided to see a bit of italy and get a job nannying out there. I ended up working for a lovely milanese family with 4 children, ranging from 4 mths,to 9yrs. who lived in a street called Via Lazorrotti.By summer we visited the mother of my boss-the countess of naples,no less, for the obligatory 6 week summer holidays!(That was fascinating, and would take another op just to describe her extensive villa, dungeon jewels/artefacts and her lovely ordinary friendly nature.) If you have ever been to Milan, then you would know how busy, lively, crowded and noisy it is.I find it similar to London,smog-wise,and in summer the temperatures soar into the hundreds, and it is very, very humid.(not my favourite summer time place!) I used to soak myself in the little half tubs they use out there at least three times a day because of perspiration...

Milan is a great city

Advantages: easy to visit
Disadvantages: busy and chaotic during weekdays

...Milan is well known around the world as a business city but if you walk around you can find a lot of interesting places for sightseeing. First of all the well know place: DUOMO is the main curch in Milan located in a large square. Is a gothic style construction with a lot of pinnacle on its roof. On the topo of the highest pinnacle stand a gold plated statue of Maria, the Jesus Christi mother, that the ??milanesi?? call ??Madonnina?? and has been elected protector of the city. Inside the curch you can see a lot of old paints as well as the treasure consisting in gold tumblers and crosses. This curch was built in 200 years using granite blocks coming from caves located near the Maggiore lake. The blocks arrived in Milan by special boats using the water channels (called Navigli) designed by Leonardo da Vinci. GALLERIA Just...

Milan a Great Place to Visit

Advantages: so much to do and see
Disadvantages: not eneough time

...I have just returned from visiting my brother in Milan ,it was my forst trip over there and I really did enjoy it. What a lovely city. It is Italy's Cultural ,Industrial and Financial Centre. The capital of the north of Italy [Lombardia}. Also is one of the main fashion centres in the world and you can see why when you walk down the main shopping areas and see all the Designer Shops. I visited the Catherdral-The Duomo which has more than 2,000 sculptures ,numberless spires and capitals. This is a must to visit when you visit Milan. Theopportunity to go up to the roof where you will see the amazing view of the city, that is breathetaking well worth it. One of the largest churches in the world and even though the Catherdral is very large there is a elegant feel to the building. They started to build it in 1386 by Gian Galeazzo Viscanti...

Hotel Adam - Milan can be cheap!

Advantages: A Bed, Good staff, Read on ........
Disadvantages: Food & Drink

...Well, when I visited Milan in February, we booked to stay in Hotel Adam about 4 weeks before we went. We got an offer on the accomodation and paid only £97 for 2 people for 3 nights which I thought was fantastic as this is a 4* hotel. There weren't many pictures of the hotel and I couldn't find a lot of information on it, we didn't know what to expect - but not a lot for that cost! The address of the Hotel is Via Palmanova 153 Milan, 20132 Italy The hotel is 6km from the city centre and 4km from Linate airport, we flew to Bergamo airport and it's not that much of a hassle getting from there either. To get to this hotel all you need to do is get onto the metro on the green line and get off at the stop named Crescenzago. From thios metro stop you can see the Hotel. All you have to do is to follow the walkway under...

Marvellous Milan

Advantages: Good Location, Great Value for Money
Disadvantages: Some rooms a little noisy

...I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in May 2004, having booked it completely blind over the internet. Suffice to say we were more than a little nervous on the journey there, as we hadn't seen any independent information or reviews on this hotel at all. However, we couldn't have been happier - this hotel is in a great location - only a few minutes walk from the main train station in the centre of Milan and local metro stations, yet on a small side street so while disturbance from traffic noise is limited you still feel really central. In the surrounding area are plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants etc, so you've not got to travel far for anything really. The hotel itself is great value for money - clean, neat and although marked as only 2 star, definitely deserves at least 3. The staff are friendly and helpful and speak English...
